  • We railfan Canadian National's southeastern branch between Mobile, AL and Hattiesburg, MS, the CN Beaumont Subdivision. This is track of the former Illinois Central Railroad. Enjoy watching different trains flying by and switching jobs in the Bell Yard in Hattiesburg and at the interchange point with the Mississippi Export Railroad (MSE) in Lucedale, MS.

    Love seeing the old M&O line to Prichard Junction still in action. PJ is that 'left turn' as it heads NW out of Mobile, and is where the Mobile & Bay Shore connected to the M&O main. That old line ran to Bayou la Batre from 1898 to 1938 [1940] when it was ripped out at the merger (M&O + GM&N = GM&O).

      Very interesting. Unfortunately, there are just these two CN trains running momentarily (one in, one out). Not sure how long they will do this or if they intend to increase traffic again (such as adding coal trains again).

    Great stuff man! I live in Agricola, MS (15 min from Evanston) and I railfan MSE, CN and Mobile a lot. CN has gone downhill a lot since this video was made and there have been a lot of changes on the Beaumont Sub. 488 has ES44DCs nine out of ten trains and we now get excited over SD70M-2s, SD75Is and even Dash 9s. We nearly foam over Dash 8s and C40-8Ms. Blue Devils, Deathstars and BCOLs are now past the point of foaming (okay, i’m exaggerating a little, but not much) it’s been 5 plus months since we’ve had one. Best thing we’ve had in the past year was EMDX 1605. Coal trains are the best thing on the line. Mobile no longer gets UP or BNSF coal, just CN. And every single one has one GEVO and one at the back. We have gotten a two 100th Anniversary units on them. Plant Daniel (MSE coal) still gets pretty decent power on BNSF coal trains (ACe trios, Executive MACs and if we’re lucky a H2 or 3 MAC leader). Best thing we get on UP coals are ACe or AH leaders. It’s been years since we’ve gotten a Patched SP. We did get UP 1996 several months ago, but it came at night and we didn’t know it was on the train till it was gone. So no one got it. Also, CN not longer owns Belt Yard in Mobile. MSE has made a new branch called ALE (Alabama Export) and they now own Belt Jct. and South. 488 still goes into the yard, but ALE does all the switching, interchanging, yard work etc. So all the GT switches are about to be gone. A489 now stays on Mobile overnight and goes back North at about 5-7 am the next morning. CN still uses that coal line to McDuffie but I think ALE technically owns it. 488 no longer works Evanston anymore so there’s a L543 that comes out of Hattiesburg to work it. Zach or I can give you more info if you’re wondering.

      Thanks for the detailed update. I was in Mobile in March 2019 and noticed some of the changes. I also learned recently that CN pulled out of Mobile. It's still a great area for train watching I think, compared to many other places.

My mother in law lives along the Beaumont in Magee, MS, and I've been wanting to catch some action along there. 488 & 489 are the only two manifests that run the line, everything else is coal trains headed to Evanston, MS just before Mobile around Moss Point, MS.

    Before I read the info, I wondered if this was part of the somewhat famous Gulf, Mobile & Ohio made famous in the 1967 film "In the Heat of the Night", but then I read the info and it was the former IC. Did some Googling and the IC merged with the afore mentioned and it became the Illinois Central Gulf. Later the IC spun off most of the former GM&O to other unheard of railroads. Must've been locals.

    • @kevinbaker4241
      @kevinbaker4241 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're called 'Blue Devils' because they were originally operated by Conrail as LMS/LMSX 728-739. (The red lights above the numberboards on the nose should be a giveaway as to its CR heritage.) The 2462 was originally built as LMS 735. Norfolk Southern still has 28 of the ex-LMS C40-8W units listed on their active roster. CSX did get 12 of them in the 1999 takeover (7918-7929), but all are now off the roster.

    Another great video. Always nice to see CN power as it is rare in the South. Question for you: At Lucedale and other places it appeared that you were filming from public property, but it looked like you were on RR property to film at Bell Yard. Did CN give you permission to film there? If so, that is rare these days as most yards are off-limits to railfans. Just curious.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes, of course, we have asked and got permission, but most of the action is visible from the public road anyway. The area was completely destroyed by the tornado in January and momentarily there is no actual CN yard office, just trailers. So it's not clear what is public and what is private ground anyway - but it's always better to ask.

    why does it say do not hump? because I'm kinda new to railfanning

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so-called hump classification yards, where a decoupled car is shoved up a small hill and rolls down on the other side by itself because of gravity. Depending on how the switches are set, the car runs into a certain track. Since there are many tracks on that side, it is an efficient way of building trains or redistributing cars among trains. However, since obviously other cars are on these tracks, too, the car coming down the hump will most likely collide with a car on the track it goes to. Obviously, not all types of cars or cargo, such as cars containing hazardous substances, should be humped, because the collision of the cars might have undesired side effects...

    • @HyperActive7
      @HyperActive7 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically do not hump refers to a car which has a very sensitive load or is loaded with something which if provoked can explode if humped too hard. Alot of the plastic pellet hoppers get this designation as well as a few of the cars which are carrying loads which are dangerous to hump. Like for example, nobody ever humps bakken crude or a car that has an explosive drum enclosed in it or the car is not meant to be humped because how it is built.

      In the case of the caboose it probably was was not built with the frame or draft gear for humping maybe? I know when they used use cabeese the use to remove them sometimes and put them behind the helper locomotives because the caboose couldn't take the help shoving the weight of the whole train
