I’d sleep on it too, Rob. The difficulty I have is with the asking price for the vehicle.

I’m a BMW man. And I would say that you won’t make much out of that. Beautiful cars but expensive and people expect concourse condition for scrap money.
    Would make great content though.

Using your saying.... "you make your profit when you buy the car". I think you'd need to knock 1k off the price to stay in the safe zone. Looks like quite a bit of work needs doing underneath.

Wheeler Dealers (I know!) did one years ago. Edd had to strip the seats (motorised/heated?) to make a quality pair. I think their gearbox needed swapping too. You missed tyres from your costing. PH forum will tell you about boot drain fixes. Track days beckon, coupe more favoured for that?

  • @trainmanbob

My thoughts Rob are keep looking. It does look ropey underneath and when you clean that off who knows how bad the rust could be.....and the weather at the moment and time of year by the time it's finished are not going to be favourable for a top money sale.. Good luck whatever you decide.
    Cheers, Bob

The flashing Oil light indicates that oil LEVEL (not pressure) sensor is knackered. Not a major issue if you check oil level by the dipstick, but easy to spot and worry a potential buyer. The sensor is easy to replace but costs more than £100.

I love the E36 BMWs! I had a 328i and it was fantastic to drive but was ropey to look as but it was a very cheap car for how mechanically sorted it was so I drove it around and loved every minute of it. If you can then you should buy this M3 no doubt but it does need a fair bit of work to bring it back how it should be.
I’ll be glued to this project 😄

I think it's the seat back panel that's been replaced, and check the double Vanos, that was a weak point. Best colour, Estoril Blue and the original wheels. They were an option on E36 Coupe & Saloon. Epic cars, still quick now & the first true 100 bhp per litre engine for a n/a road car. I recon it's worth every penny as everything else has been messed about with and ruined. Good luck

There's probably going to be some rubber bushings/shocks and brake components getting old that are past it or will need changing very soon after a new owner puts it on the road to. Thanks for the video, Take care guys.

My son has a thing for E36’s. He’s had two cars that combined make up this car being a 325 convertible & and an M3 EVO. Both P plate. Both looked nice superficially & like this one apparently only needing minor bits & pieces. But the reality is that he could never get on top of the stuff either of them needed doing & keep them on the road. The roof on the convertible has so many micro switches, motors & servos, that’s without sorting the leaks. You’ll never fix everything that needs sorting to the standard you like to achieve & make money.

  • @DjNikGnashers

    WONDERFUL CAR !!
I always wanted an M3, but the running costs were too much, so I had to settle for a 328is coupe in boston green, with the M50 manifold conversion, simota carbon fibre induction kit, remap.
This is a stunner mate, love it.
Unlike some, I don't think it's over priced either. About 5 years ago, really mint ones were fetching 7 to 8 grand, but now they are 12 to 15 for a minter.

I agree, In the 1990's I owned both a new 5 series and 7 series. Beautiful cars when new and everything worked. But I wouldn't buy a high mileage car of that vintage for £12K +. If something goes wrong mechanically the costs of repair will be high.

  • @ProdigyPlantHire
    @ProdigyPlantHire 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Rob, owned three of these. Currently own an Imola individual one of 50 made (see my channel for a video)
Drive the Evo and make sure it picks up at 2500 rpm and 5500rpm. If it doesn't the vanos is shot.
Oil leak on the back of the engine is usually a cheap fix and common.
Seats are from a sport E36. So any of them in a coupe or convertible should work.
Look for rust under the side skirts and around the jacking mounts.
Loft the boot rubber near the boot latch and look for rust.
Let it warm right up and check it goes in gear ok. These are known to drag on the clutch. If yours is doing this change the clutch hose for a braided type.
The hood will release from a cable under the rear seat. This disengaged the motors, once pulled, you need to go in the boot and push the motors back into slot.
The brake discs are not cheap, they have vented discs and around £150 a corner for genuine parts.
That's also, too much money IMO. Convertibles are the hardest to sell as everyone wants a coupe. In really nice condition with no faults, full history would be tops £10,000 absolute tops. Great cars

  • @gosportjamie

My big concern would be the amount of time the oil pressure warning light took to go out when you started it. The engine may sound OK, and it could just be a dodgy oil pressure sensor, but, as memory goes, the M3 Evo did, in period, have some pretty major issues with the oil system in the engine that led to a lot of cars having engines replaced under warranty or with substantial goodwill contributions from BMW. If this car never had that work done then the engine could be in trouble, and fixing it is neither going to be easy or cheap, especially with engine parts for these being pretty hard to find now. Something else to look out for is the gearbox as that 6-speed unit wasn't really up to the power and torque of the Evo engine, so gearbox issues are pretty common and, unlike when Wheeler Dealers did theirs, finding replacements is really not easy now, meaning that an expensive professional rebuild may be the only option...
My feeling would be to leave this one well alone, while the price is tempting, it's a '90s BMW so you're bound to run into other issues which can easily eat up a lot more money than you expect and leave you not earning anything at the other end, or, maybe, even losing money as it's only really cars with cast iron histories that make top money. Leave this one to an enthusiast with plenty of time and money to spend on it. Plus, another factor is that it's a soft top and, well, it's August now, there's not much summer left here and chop tops are always much easier to send up the road while the sun's out. If the project overruns and the sun has gone back into hiding then you could find yourself looking at the car until April or May next year when it turns up again...

    • @iainf

I was looking at 5he video. That light is a oil level sensor light. The oil pressure light is above rev counter and it goes out very quick so I don’t think there is any issues with engine. But I do agree it’s a bit expensive for the condition I’d of thought it’s closer to £6k you have a mountain of work on it

Have you checked that both vanos valves are still working. If not it can be expensive and also sucks a lot of power too

Lovely car Rob, the numbers are very tight on this one unless you have someone on it plus we haven't got that much summer left this year and convertibles take a bit of a nosedive for the colder months so definitely sleep on it unless you can flip it as is for some wages👍

Think I’d give this one a miss Rob, they tend to have a lot of hidden gremlins that can be pricey as I’m sure your aware.

Rob do you know a spares place like that for Toyota? I'm trying to keep my 20 year old Celica on the road on a budget and a Toyota spares place like that BMW one would be a gold mine for me.

Rob, I think you could make some money but there is a fair bit of risk particularly with the engine if it needs work. If the auctions aren't working out, that may tempt you but this is more risk than you normally have to take.

Whilst it is a lovely motor Rob, I've got to be honest and agree with others that the asking price is a touch too high, given the work to get it into tiptop condition. I can't see this making you enough profit to be worth the effort, however it would make for great video content. You and Chris know what to do and I'm sure you'll make the right decision one way or another. Cheers Mike

Evening Rob , I hope you are ok mate , I’ve had a couple of M3s in the past and one thing I listen out for on cold start up is the Vanoss gears rattling for a few seconds on start up , and I noticed that one did , mine cost £1500 to have that sorted on my old e46 that was 10 years ago now

I had one back along, in techno violet with the same option blue roof, which as a bit of a mare, the roof locking motor where it clips to the windscreen, the worm gear threads were shot, got very good at dropping the other roof motor in the boot and resetting the roof, the car turned out to be a money pit, shame as it looked fantastic.

The oil light is the level sensor in the bottom of the sump. Common problem, about £80-100 for it I think.

I think it would be another interesting project Yes, and there's a But... its very costly, there is a lot of money required to repair it,
You guys make great videos doing this stuff, the money you fork out for that might be better used on possibly two other or more new projects, Which I'm sure will be equally as good content.
You guys know what your doing, You will come to the decision that feels right for you 👍🙂

My dad had a couple of these when they first come out, the estoril blue was the one to have for sure, pretty sure those seats aren’t the right ones for the evo, the evo ones were slightly winged and Named “Vader” but could have been an age revision thing.. I had an e36 328 cab and those seats look identical to the ones in this vid. I’d find out if the Vanos unit has been serviced too Rob, that was always the most expensive part of the service and people would swerve it , without a correctly running serviced vanos the Car isn’t worth beans . Could be a Nail mate , enjoyable vid as always mate 👍🏼
