How to test a vintage automotive relay. The horn relay in my 1948 Plymouth was not working properly (I wired it wrong). To test it, I perform the operation in the video. Hope this helps!! The relay you see is an AutoLite ( Auto-Lite) HRL 4101

At some point prior to December '48 they had moved the horn relay to the driver side inner fender, just below the starter solenoid.
    Much harder to get to.

Great video! I have a 1950 Coronet. The horn will blow randomly. It has gotten so bad I have just disconnected the horn. Is this the sign of a bad relay?

Thanks for doing that for the young guns...
Now show a single and double relay circuits, and explain the safety behind them...

Can you just not use a modern 12V relay? They do the same job for under $5?
Great old effect video too. Love from Scotland 5* :D

If he changed the entire electrical system to 12 volt, then yes you can use a 12 volt relay. He is keeping it stock, which would be a 6 volt system.

Windings on the coil is the issue here, 6 volt would have fewer windings (less resistance). so a 12v relay when 6v is applies wouldn't have the strength to magnetise the armature.

this does not prove in any mannber that it really works, you would need to do a load test on the switching side too which you failed to do, clicking does not mean it work, in conclusion this test is a total fail

@@partsandresto He is correct the clicking does not ensure it is good. That is the first stage in testing the relay. Applying a load such as a test light would ensure its activation was working properly. I have had numerous relays that clicked and still did not work. As a matter of fact I have one right now on my 68 GTX horn relay clicks but no power out.

Is this the same method for a 5 pin relay part # 5969007. 12v?
