I love how these series are love letters to “enjoy the journey”, which you have to when the destination is at the bottom of an infinite abyss. Which long suffering fan base will Jon choose next? I’m guessing the Suns.
The Kings maybe (though they did win a title as the Cincinnati Royals in 1951). The Suns have been breaking hearts in Arizona for as long as the Falcons have. From the coin flip they lost to Milwaukee for Kareem, to the recent finals they lost to Milwaukee, it's been agony here.
As frustrating as this was to watch, I really do appreciate all the time and effort put into this documentary. I’m really looking forward to the next parts, I’ve learned a lot of stuff about my Falcons that I never knew before.
One of my favorite things that Jon Bois does is introduce me to what would be forgotten history. I’ve never heard of Kim Mcquilken, or knew the extent of Dave Hampton’s 1000 yard chase, or knew how much I would love the sheer absurdism or Norm Van Brocklin. I appreciate that Jon, and what I appreciate more are the bits of philosophy squeezed in there, “nobody’s ever one person.” Great video.
Just think, people of my general age cohort (35 y 11 m) have known the Falcons and Saints as being teams that won more than not, and have off and on again challenged for Super Bowls, or at the least the NFC Championship. Far from my Grandparents day of barely caring about the Saints because they did nothing but suck fat dongs until the mid 80s.
@@andrejg4136 Yeah, I'm 26 and I'm from New Orleans. With the exception of a few low stretches for either side, the Brees vs Ryan era has been a formidable, playoff effecting rivalry

The Super Bowl LI retread at the beginning reminds me that I still haven't gotten over it. I still sometimes think "surely that was just some nightmare I had"-- but then I remember that it actually happened and the soul crushing feeling resurrects itself all over again. And I think the most painful part of the worst Falcons memory ever it is considered to be the GREATEST Patriots memory ever-- and thus, we have to keep seeing it re-aired over and over and over... ugh...
As a Patriots fan, I still remember staying up to watch the game after the rest of my family went to bed, insisting we still had a shot at victory. That win was one of the most exiting things that ever happened to me.
I can't NOT point out that I just gave this comment its 28th like with 3 replies underneath it. Here, I'll be the fourth reply. I hope it helps. Hey the story of how the Cavs won the 2016 NBA championship apparently started in 1919, so you'd be surprised how deep these people can dig there at Secret Base!
But to fully appreciate this collapse, we also need to discuss the origins of the word “collapse” itself. Collapse comes from the Latin “collapsus”, but in order to appreciate why we have so many Latin words in English, which is a Germanic language, we have to go back to the battle of Hastings. The year was 1066...

I was more surprised that the NHL entry in most intense rivalries was Habs-Nordiques and not Avs-Red Wings, though I guess that is my frame of reference because the Nordiques were already in Colorado when I started paying attention to the NHL.

As a falcons fan I barely made it through the opening segment, great job of capturing the feeling of elation that was in the air. Hard to express how devastating the 2017 superbowl was. It will stay with me forever.
Me as well, to have another chance and finally win it all would be the NFL equivalent of the MLB's Chicago Cubs winning it all in 2016 if not better than that.
Fun Fact: Bob Lee got Drafted becuase the Scout for the Vikings saw him ONLY warming up passes on the sideline of the All-American game. The owner never watched him play but took him anyways and he was the best player in that round of the draft that year and payed off big

A good few years ago I decided that to appreciate NFL properly I needed to follow a team. As I live in the UK I have no geographical connection to any particular franchise so I elected to follow the one with the longest history that had never been to a Super Bowl, as I thought it would feel nice when they finally did. As such, I picked the Lions. Why I did that to myself I still have no idea.

@@craigwinter3792 Our punter, Billy Lothridge, had been an All-American QB at Georgia Tech but he only had one kidney so they wouldn't let him play...only punt. I ride Marta on the way home and so I watched this while going through the city of Atlanta and went right by the old and new stadium. It gave me chills. Great vid. -Daniel
So far you've done West Coast baseball and now East Coast football. The next logical choice has to be either the Edmonton Oilers or the Indiana Pacers. Each had a period of dominance that are now in the distant past, Edmonton in the 80s and Indiana in the 70s. I love these long form deep dives into the history of a franchise. Keep them coming.
Growing up in Athens in the 70s and 80s, I always felt the Falcons were a step below the Bulldogs - not in quality of play, of course, but in general interest. Atlanta still has a rep for not supporting teams - see the disappearing NHL teams - but Atlanta United is changing that. Also - NC was Washington Redshirts territory. I was at a paper in Wilmington, NC, when the Panthers started, and readers made sure we knew we still needed to run the full wire story and some pictures front and center on Washington. But I’m nit-picking. This is great.
Cowboys and Steelers were, and in many ways still are, the far more popular teams in NC. Wilmington and the Outer Banks are the only historical Redskins territories.
When Easy Street came on again, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. Which is strange considering I only started binging Jon Bois content last year after going through all of 17776 in anticipation for 20020. (Hope 20021 is going well by the way!)

We all know that Jon and Alex have proven to be great at this, but this is my first exposure to Joe Ali’s work and he’s fantastic. Also nice to have someone devoted to the team do some of the narration. Also, since I’m old enough to know how most of this story goes, I’m so very sorry.
4:35 "This was a moment the city and the franchise was waiting on for years. And it was finally happening." A few months earlier I was a Cubs fan watching the team win the first World's Series in 108 years. Yet at one point I realised I didn't enjoy it as much as I could or should have. Because I never thought this is happening. It went straight from it could to it did. The moment I relaxed and was happy and enjoyed it, it already happened and was past tense. I think that happened so I wouldn't have to come down in case we blew it and lost the WS. After listening to that sound bite, I say I feel for you, Mr. Ali, and everyone in ATL, and Falcon fans everywhere. And while I didn't enjoy the moment as much as I could have. I may have still made the right choice.
Constantly amazed by the quality of these productions. The music, the graphics, the way that Jon and the team retell events, it's all so unique and so well done. Best sports content on YT for many years now, and for many more hopefully.
I just cannot explain how much I love these detailed accounts of unfortunate sports franchises' entire histories. I can't help but appreciate the sheer effort that's put into these videos; some charts alone look like they'd take days to make, not to mention animation and citing all those damn sources, AND writing the script which I might add is pretty impeccable. I can't also help but wonder which franchise you'll cover next. Will you stick with football? Because the Buffalo Bills have a storied but unfortunate history I'd love to learn more about. Or will you venture into hockey? Because frankly the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks both have a history that fits the mold for this video perfectly, at least on the surface-level. Just really great work and I, along with many others I'm sure, look forward to what's to come.

I love how these series are love letters to “enjoy the journey”, which you have to when the destination is at the bottom of an infinite abyss. Which long suffering fan base will Jon choose next? I’m guessing the Suns.
the correct answer about the nba has to be the kings or the wolves
Pacers. Has to be the Pacers.
If he does NBA I'd like him to do one on the Clippers. They have a weird history.
The Kings maybe (though they did win a title as the Cincinnati Royals in 1951). The Suns have been breaking hearts in Arizona for as long as the Falcons have. From the coin flip they lost to Milwaukee for Kareem, to the recent finals they lost to Milwaukee, it's been agony here.
the lesson is enjoy life, because there is nothing after
As frustrating as this was to watch, I really do appreciate all the time and effort put into this documentary.
I really felt it when Jon called the Falcons & Saints the Beavis & Butthead of the NFL.
As a Saints fan, I mean...he's not wrong.
@@andrejg4136 Yeah, the rivalry is definitely different for younger fans like us. I’m 25, and I’ve never known the Saints or Falcons as consistently bad teams like they were in the 60s through 80s. They’ve both been good teams, with occasional bad seasons or great seasons. I can’t imagine being a Saints fan in those early years.
My dad’s first Saints game he went to in person as a kid was the 62-7 beatdown mentioned in this video, LOL. He still can’t believe the Saints won the Super Bowl after growing up watching those awful teams.
It's here. It's finally here. This is about to be the best 45 minutes of my day

About to have some leftover Domino’s pizza, some cinnamon bread twists and a nice cold soda for lunch while sitting back and enjoying this masterpiece! 🙌🏼

Thank god my parents made me go to bed after 28-3
I can't NOT point out that I just gave this comment its 28th like with 3 replies underneath it.
Here, I'll be the fourth reply. I hope it helps.
(I also hope that the Chargers' epic blowup in the playoffs this year provides you some comfort. The Saints aren't the Falcons' only companions in this world, as it turns out.)

In order to appreciate this collapse, we need to rewind
*The origins of football begin in 1834*
Hey the story of how the Cavs won the 2016 NBA championship apparently started in 1919, so you'd be surprised how deep these people can dig there at Secret Base!
But to fully appreciate this collapse, we also need to discuss the origins of the word “collapse” itself. Collapse comes from the Latin “collapsus”, but in order to appreciate why we have so many Latin words in English, which is a Germanic language, we have to go back to the battle of Hastings. @@SimuLord I wanna hear someone who's a fan of Detroit Sports spend 4 hours talking about "hey we were good in uh... ten years, across almost 500 combined years of play!"
I swore to myself that I would never relive the horror that was 28-3, but god damn Jon Bois, you just dragged me right back into it.
Jon: “Forget rivalries like Lakers-Celtics and Yankees-Red Sox you’re told you care about… this is the only one that’s been able to sustain that degree of hatred for over half a century”
Habs-Bruins: those are rookie numbers. You need to pump up those numbers
I was more surprised that the NHL entry in most intense rivalries was Habs-Nordiques and not Avs-Red Wings, though I guess that is my frame of reference because the Nordiques were already in Colorado when I started paying attention to the NHL.
@@chaosof99 i mean that rivalry was amazing for 5-10 years, but it hasn’t been all that in a long time. maybe we see a resurgence soon enough with yzerman?
Saints/Falcons feel special because it's just as, if not more petty than LSU Tigers/UGA Bulldogs; and it's hard to reach that level of "petty intra-family squabble" like a college rivalry.
Oh, are we not going to include college?

As a falcons fan I barely made it through the opening segment, great job of capturing the feeling of elation that was in the air. Hard to express how devastating the 2017 superbowl was. It will stay with me forever.
Me as well, to have another chance and finally win it all would be the NFL equivalent of the MLB's Chicago Cubs winning it all in 2016 if not better than that.
That Super Bowl was the worst thing to happen to Atlanta since William Tecumseh Sherman.
I can’t believe Randy Johnson was a hall of fame pitcher and an nfl quarterback at the same time. Amazing athlete

Alex's understated and dry sense of humor rarely comes out during his long segments about stats and specific players, but god damn.

I would love to see a History of the Detroit Lions in the future. It's a cursed franchise almost, so I'd love to have some context to their history.
@@AnthonyWhite-editorinchief101 that’s pretty common actually. A lot of people in the UK have chosen to follow the Lions. I’m so sorry, we’ve been through so much and now we’re ruining fans over the pond lmao
Some say it is the curse of Bobby Layne. I say the Lions suffer the curse of William Clay Ford. He is the worst owner nobody talks about. Ever since he bought the Lions, they only had like 8 winning seasons and ONE playoff win.
Shout out to your soundtrack person/people. There were moments that reminded me of the soundtrack to the Judorovsky’s Dune documentary, which might sound odd/random but for me is meant as a compliment. Beautiful work!
I think Bois picks the music. He loves workmanlike 70s and 80s composers like Keith Mansfield.

It’s amazing how different you can tell this will be compared to the Mariners history. The flow and storytelling is noticeably different and yet has the same reverence and appreciation. I can’t put it to words, but it’s good to know this will be just as grand a journey.
Both docs have had people named Randy Johnson in it. Thats too perfect
Now if only they can find a way to work in the other Pat Mahomes. (OK, that was the Fumble Dimension about the Mariners, not the Dorktown documentary, but still.)
I refuse to believe that someone named Kim McQuilken ever even existed, let alone played QB in the NFL

Familiar with the area... Cincinnati is cool too
So far you've done West Coast baseball and now East Coast football. The next logical choice has to be either the Edmonton Oilers or the Indiana Pacers. Each had a period of dominance that are now in the distant past, Edmonton in the 80s and Indiana in the 70s.
I love these long form deep dives into the history of a franchise. Keep them coming.
This is one of the best written and produced series on TH-cam
You can’t pick two teams to do a deep dive on that both had a randy Johnson. I thought I was losing it for a second
We have once again begun an epic journey. A true masterpiece!
" Make it 28 to 3 and you're golden ".

"This was a moment the city and the franchise was waiting on for years. And it was finally happening."
A few months earlier I was a Cubs fan watching the team win the first World's Series in 108 years.
"Van Brocklin loved Richard Nixon. He also hated Richard Nixon."
In fairness, I feel like a lot of historians feel that way, too.
