Hello from USA. Just bought an 23' Airstream and wife wants a Toyota Land cruiser to tow it with. Ouch. She's not confident of the trucks from our big three. I sort of agree if your spending $80k on a vehicle might as well be a LC. Thanks for the video.
If only our travel trailers and motorhomes were built like this. Maybe not everyone will take their motorhome off road, but there are places here in the USA that have potholes and gravel that could cause damage to the caravan if it's not tested and built to withstand that kind of road. Cheers.
Love the vid. 👍👍. For me this vid has proven that the Prado will tow a horse float no worries. Do you know if the suspension has been upgraded for the towing capacity? I know the engine and transmission cooling has.
The Prado is so much more capable when fitted with central tyre inflation. Take it down on rough tracks. It stops spitting rocks and has much better ride and traction. Then punch highway pressures for sealed roads and away you go.
Thats interesting that the Prado 150 is only now getting a 3 tonne capacity, the Lexus GX has had a 6500 lb capacity since, 2005 I want to say? Usually your wagons and utes are rated to tow much higher than ours on account of the differences of drawbar weights and distributions. Maybe its the V8, maybe its the rear air springs? Wish we got the rear locker though, just ATRAC for us.

We were filming some quick pieces between the agency who we were assisting present for over 4 days with 4 different grades, and were filming in a closed off park with the black and white plates, and when heading out on the road for some running shots had the registered plates and extension mirrors back on! I only want a tandem van that’s legal behind the 150 Prado with 3 tonne tow limit, and apart from the new 16 ft Jayco Traveller Off road van, the Kedron your towing seems to be my only other option. Since toyota won't put a deisel in their trucks stateside... I went ZR2 with the 2.8 duramax. Yeah, after 20 years and 12 Toyota models, lifelong toyota fan... I jumped ship. The Colorado aka Holden is great.
The Prado is a great 4WD but wait until you get it on the highway and hit some medium hills, this underpowered 4X4 is just hopeless towing a 3 ton van.
2.8 D-4D diesel engine. 450 nm of power. I just hate the DPF. That's in Australia. In gulf countries we get the 3.0 D-4D. I prefer the Aussie engine though !

I guess when he makes the comment that the caravan he is towing is approaching 3,000 kg he is technically correct it is just approaching it from the wrong end. The Kedron TE21 Specs Overall length 8.4m (27ft 6in); External body length 6.4m (21ft); External body width 2.29m (7ft 6in); Travel height 3.1m (10ft 2in); Internal height 1.99m (6ft 6in) Tare 3370kg; ATM 3990kg or 4490kg (depending on tow vehicle); Payload 620kg or 1120kg; Ball weight 260kg - Kedron advise they'll change the ATM depending on the tow vehicle??? WTF??
Hi John, thanks for tuning in, though to clear things up & avoid any unnecessary concern for you, people reading the above comment & possible damage to reputation with an assumption of a 21ft van being used with questioning of legality, this was filmed in 2017, & with the custom building back then, a 17ft int' (18'6 body) narrowed to 7ft wide was built, with a registered tare of 2535kgs over the calibrated scales at the factory on this particular van for the purpose of the tow test. In more recent years, the TopEnder® is now standard at 7ft'6 wide, in the longer & more optioned spec like you outlined, suiting larger capacity tow vehicles like the US pick ups, with production of a Kedron® 'Compact' with 3t ATM to suit the Prado these days. As a 59 year family business, value greatly the integrity for assisting owners with suitable builds to enjoy their travels, & hope you appreciate the reply. Should maybe thank for raising & being able to post an explanation, as if you could assume this by quickly looking at things, others could also. Thanks again, all the best & safe travels!

Towing on highway isn't that great as it can't maintain speed when the gradient increases. Off-road towing is perfectly fine however.

The 2012 Prado 155 ZR short wheel base has a 3t towing capacity.
Did you use the rear diff lock during this test? Or only the center diff?
Is 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine enough for 3t towing? I mean of course it can tow 3t but how was the feeling?
