  • This video describes how to quickly breakout your Steven Slate Drums SSD5.5 (free or paid version) into multiple tracks in your DAW (Reaper).
    This 5 Min Tech Tip video focuses on breaking out SSD5.5 MIDI drums into multiple tracks on Reaper. It's not really that hard, but the process isn't as intuitive as it could be. Especially, for someone working with these kind of MIDI drum programs for the first time, or venturing beyond a simple L-R stereo MIDI track workflow for the first time.
    This works with both the free version and the paid version of SSD5.5 Drums. While the paid version has more drum sets to choose from, even the free set comes with multiple sets.
    The video explains how to do this from scratch, as well as doing it with an already programmed stereo MIDI track.

    Thank you for this video. I like to create a single drum track as I'm writing the song, adding all the instruments as i go. Once i have the "Basic" tracks all done, I fan the drums out to multitrack with appropriate busses for ease of mixing. Then i add the overdub,/ additional tracks and mix.

    Alan, great video. I'm relatively new to Reaper and am starting to learn about Virtual Drums. This video on SSD5.5 in Reaper was perfect to help me get started. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Alan, First of all, thank you for the video. Great work. Part 2, the already recorded drum track, was a midi track or audio file. I have one audio recorded from a Roland TD8, and trying to rack my head to break up individual channels. Already have the free version of SSD 5.5. Would appreciate any pointers that help. Thanks

      @AlanHamiltonAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The drum track was MIDI. I don't know much about the Roland TD8. I think it has 2 stereo pair outputs, but I'm not sure how you assign things within those outputs and what it allows you to do.

    If I already have SSD5.5 loaded with a midi track feeding into one stereo track but I want to only put the snare on a separate track, how do I do this? I tried a few things and couldn't get it to work. 😕

    Great video, thank you a lot!! However do you think that when we record we should use the original levels in the mixer of SSD or should we set to zero all faders? I ask because when mixing the audio files I usually use the original levels that comes with SSD to preserve the balance but I’m not sure if that is the right thing to do. Can you help? Best regards and stay safe!!

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there is no wrong answer. I tend to leave the original levels alone for tracking, but then once I'm mixing the music down, I will change the balance on the tracks to whatever works for the song.

    Is there a way to do drum mapping (I think that is the term) I'm pretty new to this, coming from acoustica beatcraft (XP era standalone software) and I'm so use to a point and click method of building drum tracks, I just recently got reaper and I'm interested in upgrading my amp sims, drum machine, etc etc... But what has me held back is the thought of doing all this through a midi controller or preset grooves, I'd like to build my own but I don't know where to start in reaper

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you setup your main drum track in Reaper, it should be set as MIDI as your source. That will give you a chart/grid where you can place drums in Reaper.
      Each line (up and down) will be a different drum, and from right to left will be timing/length.
      At the bottom will be dynamics adjustments.
      What I normally do is find a pre-programmed groove in the software, save a few bars of it, make any initial alterations I want on the initial beat, copy and paste that for what will be the length of the song... or more than enough.
      And then either use that as a scratch or base track for the rest of the song and then come back to the grid and make final changes and additions (fills, cymbals, dynamics, intentional 'feel' things...etc...) and an ending at some point in building the song.
      That's default... I think Reaper actually has a couple of different plugins for MIDI.
      Technically, when I think of MIDI mapping, I'm thinking of which note triggers which drum/sound... but I don't think that's what you're talking about as much as what I described above.

    It can be frustrating outputting (or figuring out how) to output SSD5 to multiple tracks for individual drum control in Reaper. But it's actually pretty simple and hopefully this guide will help cut thru some frustration.

    Can you PLEASE do a BEGINNERS video on how to set up SSD5 in Reaper for the your very 1st time, in this video you skipped something because I still cannot get SSD to open.. You fly through it so fast it's difficult to even follow along.

      It's been a while since I did the original installation. I created this video on the assumption that SSD5 was already installed and working and to show users how to add this next step to it.
      I just took a look around for some links that might help you:

      @@AlanHamiltonAudio Going into it, I thought it was only going to be a simple VST-A picture of the drumkit that you click for the sounds. I also didn't know Steve's was nearly 2 gigs in size.
      So, I first didn't know it downloaded into a folder located elsewhere, but I located it and then moved it to my Reaper plugins folder.
      They should be providing tutorials, because it's so different. I'd stick with MT-2 but the kick and the cymbals are too short and barely audible.

    • @theunholinesswithin70
      @theunholinesswithin70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlanHamiltonAudio Ok, turns out that I had to put the folder into the VSTPlugins. The problem now is that there's no sound, but this freebie only provides the kick and snare, and I can't do anything with those alone.
      Thanks anyway, buddy.
