This is the ultimate beauty of the 12:30 time slot - just doing weird, experimental stuff. Nothing was ever cooler in late night. This is why Dave is the king and is so revered by so many generations of comedians, from Jon Stewart to Jimmy Kimmel and so many more.
I never saw this show . I was 12 when this one aired and I didn’t start watching Letterman regularly until I was about 17. But man this makes me feel old. The late 70s and early 80s was an awesome time to be a kid.
This was Letterman’s house in New Canaan CT. Shared it with Merrill Markoe & his two dogs Bob & Stan. Sold in 2002 for $1.1 mill. Over two hundred years old. Moved to North Salem NY.
@@allendracabal0819 That show started in 1982. I was working in NYC then & because I commuted from NJ I read like three papers a day on the train. Used to love watching him back then. I guess it stuck with me because my mom lives up there now 👋
I understand the house was torn down a few years ago along with a few adjacent homes so someone could build a compound on multiple lots. If true, that's sad. Houses like that with the camp lodge-type architecture are almost impossible to find now. Not to mention the history and novelty of being Dave's house during his most prolific era.
Kind of minor genius. Loved these years. Dave was at his best in the early days. His kooky enthusiasm was just so perfect. His later years were a tad more cynical, but still funny and sincere. :-)
Linda Ronstadt, the woman who described Elton Johns first show at the Troubadour as "So good it made everyone feel like we were levitating" and Dexter Fletcher read that and used it in Rocketman.
Today, it’s hard to understand how revolutionary this was. To understand the full extent of the humor you have to know what network tv was like in the late 1970’s into the early 1980”s.
I wondered that too. In terms of iconic Letterman guests, he was right up there with Teri Garr and Bill Murray. Grodin's last appearance on Late Show was in January of '08
Good old David Letterman, WFH - Working From Home, in the 80s. 😀👍 Joking aside, Letterman has always been a smooth articulate interviwer, with interesting conversations on his shows. 👍
Proud to have been a Letterman fan from the get go. Miss this type of show... And Dave's Mom!! 🥰 [Prediction: This Gary Stengfeld hack comic doesn't make it in the big leagues]
My Uncle (RIP) was one of the first to own a cable company down south. We were the $h!+ in the neighborhood(that's a good thing). Plus, all the newest gaming systems! But, no one, no one could resist our coolness for street football! We were the envy of outdoor entertainment! PS for prosperity, (when the Smithsonian looks for history) the kids on a show called Zoom wore these shirt too.
36:00 Linda nailed the uselessness of religion. “People (nuns) running around in medieval costumes…” She was so articulate. Great guest. Thanks for sharing this video. Cheers.
Linda Ronstadt, wondering if people would be willing to pay the ticket price for her concert, “$35 is a lot to ask of people. Then they have to get a babysitter… I just don’t know. We’ll see.” $35!!!! Dang.
Wow, has it been this long since this aired? I remember watching this on TV. I remember being annoyed with this show and thought he was just calling it in and being lazy.
I wonder how they did this ! They can't have actually had him drive from CT to NY. But nothing I can think of makes sense ! Unless each segment was filmed at a different time and then they put it all together.
During Charles Gordin’s bit, you can tell that the background behind Letterman is slightly different 7:22 …which leads me to think he was simply in the next room.
Dave was ahead of his time as usual. The first Zoom tv show
Right? 😂
IT'S CALLED LIVE SATELLITE TV and it beats CRAPPY ZOOM anytime 😁👍🏻
No.
Couldn't have had anyone better than Charles Grodin to pull off this bit.
Watching Dave get cable installed is much better than anything on TV right now
This is no lie.
Full length episodes! Yes! More of this! 😍
Almost, seems like we missed Linda's performance.
I've said for years they should make a David Letterman channel playing all the old shows in order. I'd easily pay to watch them!
There was no one cooler on TV than Dave in the 80's. There has been no one as cool since. Thanks for the memories!!!
Yep, watched him in HS and college. Nothing like it. Had to control my laughter so as not to awake my parents
Letterman and SCTV, and it's been all downhill ever since.
Letterman Is awful thank God he's gone
Yep 100% agree.
Damn, Dave did his at-home show 36 years before other late-night hosts!
Plus this was actually funny.
There wasn't covid go around, but there was AIDS, which also involved Dr. Fauci. PS It actually closer to 38 years ago.
@@caliscribe2120 True. Fauci has been wrong at every turn on everything. Hopefully America stops listening to beurocrats.
@@djbeezy trump lost
@@djbeezy Wrong. Learn to spell. Nice costume.
1:55 Paul Shaffer, believe it or not, is 33 years old here. Doesn't look a day over 53.
I got a lot of respect for ya, babe.
He went from balding to galactic space captain in no time XD

Letterman was a genius just by not caring what people think. Authenticity is sorely missed these days.
I never saw this show . I was 12 when this one aired and I didn’t start watching Letterman regularly until I was about 17. But man this makes me feel old. The late 70s and early 80s was an awesome time to be a kid.
Yes it was!✌👍🙋♀️
That was just a spectacular piece of nostalgia.
Thanks for sharing Dave!

Cool trivia, thanks. Can't help but wonder how you know all that.

Dave really filled out those jeans if you get my drift. Now I know why he was such a hit with the ladies
I know!!! He looks incredibly gorgeous!!💙💙💙💙
I can’t stop staring!!!!!😉😊
What a strange, trippy episode of Blue's Clues.
NICE. 😀
Kind of minor genius. Loved these years. Dave was at his best in the early days. His kooky enthusiasm was just so perfect. His later years were a tad more cynical, but still funny and sincere. :-)
He got older. But I couldnt get into the CBS show, Just wasn;t the same.
This was his house on North Wilton Road in New Canaan, CT.
My good buddy lived directly across the street.
I would love to see the "Fun With Delivery Men. Dave had deliveries of pizza, a bird and an ice sculpture. That was one of the best EVER.

True. Tv was very structured and rigid. If someone stood up from their chair on the tonight show it was considered edgy
I was SO hoping the cable guy was Chris Elliott.
but still, that's easily the earliest footage i've EVER seen of gary willis.. pretty cool!
Unbelievably funny. Thank you!
For the longest time, Charles Grodin looked the same. RIP CG
What a treasure to have these..love this so much
I would take two solid hours of Hal Gurnee's Network Time Killers over any talk show presently on television.
This is genius. Sheer genius.
Thanks for making these public Dave.
Charles Grodin and Dave Letterman is basically a proto Jordan Schlansky and Conan o'Brien
It’s amazing how it started as a very silly show, and ended with the incredible Linda Ronstadt talking about the diversity of music.
Charles Grodin was must-watch in those early Letterman days. A great bit with them subtly busting each other's balls.
Damn, Dave doing these things before everyone else does! Asmr with his dogs and doing his tv show from his home!
Like a fine wine.
Dave was a wild & crazy guy in those days. Oh wait, that was Steve.
I forgot how much fun I had in my 20's watching Dave. With a 'special' brownie that I baked. Maybe that's why I forgot. 🤣
love dave miss him
Grodin, Paul Simon and Letterman all lived within 20 miles of one another at the time.
Charles Grodin was always great. How was he not a part of Dave's final shows?
I wondered that too. In terms of iconic Letterman guests, he was right up there with Teri Garr and Bill Murray. Grodin's last appearance on Late Show was in January of '08
Why is Dave just Steve from Blues Clues in this clip it’s messing with me so hard.
25:43 Jerry nervously vamping with Paul was great, Jerry did great
Great fresh material. Linda’s comment about hoping her voice is still strong at her Dad’s age 🥲
I love Dave! This is the best!
How ballsy that bit was. Genius to everyone involved.
Looks like Dave found a Clue from Blue 🐕
I think Dave preceded BC

Pure comedy gold!
Dave's the best
There was another episode where Dave sat at home and watched a rerun of a previous show.

Hey at least his niece Hailee made it big
The 1980's, the cable age.
Dave is so nutty! I miss that so much!
Full eps, yessss!!!
What a glamorous home!
Staggeringly ahead of his time, wow! I see comedians like Tim Heidecker (of "Tim and Eric" fame) drawing so much inspiration from episodes like this.
It aired from midnight to 1 am when I was in high school. Really screwed me on the sleep.
Actually, started after Carson, at 12:30 east coast. Yes messed up my sleep too. I still feel he and Carson turned me into the insomniac I am today.
Great Guestlist, love the Rugby Shirt, and the dogs!
I like looking at the end credits. Chris Elliot, Barbara Gaines, Brian McAloon, and Edd Hall.
“35 dollars is alot” dude thats my average cost for McDonalds for two people
They should've had Charles wander up the street from his place to the Letterman household
Great show line-up. Groden and Seinfeld are extremely funny. Linda is gorgeous.
I miss Letterman so much !!!
Its like an episode of This Old House, from the early 80's
I wonder how long it was before that cable guy realized he installed cable on Letterman's show.
I was about 15 minutes in when I realized this was a full episode and not just a clip lmao
Young Jerry was so polite. 65yo Jerry would have nailed Dave for showing up late to work.
Linda Ronstadt was quite the chatterbox. Adorable.
I didn't really feel that way. I thought she talked just the right amount for a talk show. What surprised me is how shy she seemed.
Strike force five
Dave is wearing the same shirt as the guy in Blues Clues. Lol
RIP Charles Grodin
*Pre Corona video taping*.. 😆 lol

Amazing episode. Never seen it before. Speaking of Andy Kaufman though, could you folks upload more Andy Kaufman appearances? Thank you!
1:38 11 years before pulp fiction came out, mia wallace was on letterman
Grodin looks suspiciously like "W." Bush @15:01
the funniest part of this bit is the shirt
Brilliant!
Dave, we need to track down Gary and say hi!
Bet that Wisconsin powered generator never let them down.
LOL there will never be another Dave and Conan

My parents didn't get Dave's humor either. I still think he's hilarious.
@@dianewinters8628Obviously, someone going to the trouble to watch this and comment on it gets Dave's humor.
I don't think that Steinfield guy will ever amount to anything
This is just great tv
What’s with the cameras?
Whoever knew that Paul had eyes and hair at one point in his life?
Those of us who watched Paul on Late Night in the '80s and on SNL in the late '70s knew.
Linda Ronstadt is really interesting.

You can tell at the 7:22 mark, the background is slightly different…he was likely in the next room.
19:05 hahahaha
this is the original AD house tour
How in the hell did Dave make it from his house to the show that quick? They must’ve spread the segments out a bit.
It's always been taped.
@@Mario_N64 Yes, but taped in real-time.

It was a bit. The stuff at the house was taped separately, and Dave was in the building for the Grodin interview.
Okay.
Was that a PBS show playing at the very end, (during credits)?
Safe bet.
