    Loved it. At 80 with 56 years in photography, I think many beginners underestimate the value of giving high priority to the gear behind the camera - the expansive heart, the intense calm mental focus, the will to take pictures that will serve and delight. Beyond that, yes! As you say, you must get a camera that will feel great in your hands and be fun to shoot with. And that won't always be the most complicated, feature-packed camera. I would say flatly, that the Canon M50 is more fun than the M6, a Fuji X-E2 or X-E3 is more fun than an X-T30 or X-T3/4 - I'm not sure about Canon. A used full-frame EOS 6D for $4-500 on Ebay will last forever and deliver great image quality because of the wonderful sensor, and it's relatively simple, but then there's the expense of L lenses if you want the very best images. I'm using an EOS R6, and of course it's complex, but with decades of experience I know how to make it simple and use it that way. That's a wonderful thing about Canon's top gear, that it can get out of the way, and it does the basics so darn well. :) If I were gifted the R3, well, sure, I'd keep it, ho-ho.

    The timing of this video could not be more perfect! I am going through the research phase and trying to weigh the must-haves versus the nice-to-haves. The most significant nice-to-have would be the funds available to purchase what I eventually decide upon. Luckily, I live in a town that has an actual family-owned camera shop and I plan on visiting them soon to accomplish your suggested hands-on research! Thanks for another insightful and well-made video!

    Hey Sagi, been a while since you've done camera content!! Good to be back and hear from you again. I watch many of your camera vids when I was shopping. GAS is real!! 🙂 Many of your videos back then were very helpful in my decision-making process. I would add to one of your points.... Be sure you're buying something you will actually use and enjoy. If you don't have fun with photography/videography no camera is worth it. I took a good year to decide because budget played a big role. Finally, I came across a great deal on a used X-T3 with a grip, lens and extra batteries. The camera was basically brand new, still in the box. Got it for less than the price of most bodies alone. Since I focus primarily on photography the X-T3 has been so much fun. Have a great week. Good seeing you again!

    Excellent advice there, especially around glass, screens and feel. I got most of my EF L series glass more than ten years ago and have only just sold the majority of it when moving to Canons R5 and re-investing in RF L glass. I was pleasantly surprised how , well looked after, EF L glass held its value. As for articulating screens, a god-send for those of us with shot knees as is an EVF for those of us who do a bit (not long form) video in bright light wow what an improvement over a DSLR non-articulated screen . :)

    Thanks for the video. I often quote your “buy it nice or buy it twice” to people. Very true. I made the mistake with a camera and a lens, not fully my fault, partly salesperson, as I wasn’t really sure I knew what I wanted out of my photography. And a laptop, thought a Chromebook would do. WRONG. Now corrected those to fit what I have established my needs to be. Happy now with what I have. The camera won’t change, but maybe another lens as I only have one, the Sony 100-400GM to go with my a7iv.😬

    My saying Is "Buy once, cry once" - Good basic tips - You really have to do soul searching and have a hard, realistic looks at your needs. Sometimes it is worth paying for things that will endure (like good lenses), but again take a hard look before you buy. I bought a Canon 16-35 F4 lens that is terrific - sharp and great autofocus, etc. If I bought the F2.8 version I would have spent over twice as much to get that extra stop of light - I really didn't NEED it even if I WANTED it.

    • @TechGearTalk

    Re the 1st tip - ergonomics. I don't give a toss about how the camera feels. Having at one time lugged a boxy 6x7 and three lenses around for landscape shots on a tripod, I don't expect a camera to be a substitute for a squeezeball. Depends on your use case I suppose.

    • @truthseeker6804

    @ozwrangler.c 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve definitely made some of these mistakes!
    Wish I’d used the camera more in-store. Trying to save $, I’ll end up spending more to change systems!
    Turns out accurate autofocus is much more important than I thought it would be. Most of my photos are candid, poor control over lighting. If I’m not quick, I’ll miss the shot and wearing glasses for close-up only doesn’t help 😄 I’m thinking to sell my Fuji gear for Sony or Canon. Fujis strength isn’t autofocus, it’s lack of processing, smallness. Sure, you can improve AF with technique, but why bother when other systems do 90% of that work for you? Doesn’t need to be hard to be a hobby 😊

    Great video. You raise some excellent points. I currrently have older Nikon and Canon APS-C setups with 2 bodies each and a equal amount of lens. I have been shotting DX going back to the release of the Canon 20D. I still have numerous APS-C DSLR's . The only camera shop you can see cameras at these days around me is Best Buys. We were recently in Maul and while my older DSLR's did great in RAW, it was challenging when we went to evening functions, shows and a Luau. I went in to see the 90D, but I after not getting a new camera in 5 years, I would really like to experience Full Format and Mirrorless.
    I am an amateur photographer since the 70's and do mostly people and scenery photos. I also enjoy shooting RAW and putting the RAW images through Lightroom and Photoshop.
    There are numerous options. I am leaning towards the Canon RP or R6. Also I have not ruled out Nikon Z5 or Z6. The more I read the more confusing it gets. I love the feel of the Canon R6 in my hands. I don't love the price. I am really more into taking still photos as opposed to videos. So I am not concerned about 4K cropping. My major concerns about the RP is no protection of the sensor, cheaper build quality and dotential dynamic range issues.
    So my 3 big questions that I can’t really answer 1) would the R6 be overkill. 2) Would the IQ be noticeably better on the R6? 3) Would I be better off getting the L glass with the RP vs the kits glass on the R6?
    Would welcome and appreciate feedback for from you since you seem very accomplished . Thanks

    One good piece of advice is: buy things that will make you excited to use them and thus more likely to make content.
    If you already have a camera and some lenses, maybe instead of buying a more expensive camera get a car or a bicycle. Maybe get a cheap vintage lens to experiment with. Get a nice camera backpack so you could take the camera with you anywhere you go. Get a drone or a gimbal. Just keep things exciting.

    There is some things that I would like to add :
    - First of all, take the time to define, very clearly your needs. And not only the needs you have right now but also what could they evolve into? That will drastically define what kind of cameras you will buy, and also what kind of features are to be prioritized compared to others, and get informed about those things you want to do and what you need to have in your camera to do them. I've seen people buy a Sony A7R2 for video because someone told then Sony cameras were good for video and low light, and the dude just assumed that a 42MP sensor was better than a 12MP sensor.
    - Then, try to measure the interest you have to photography or video. Is it like a little hobby that you just started or is it something you've always wanted to do and you're now finally about to make your first purchase? A LOT of people drop out photography after a very short while because their interest wasn't high enough, and the camera they bough is suddenly nothing more than an expensive paper weight loosing value.
    - Finally, depending on the answer of the previous point : SPEND ACCORDINGLY. If that's a hobby, or if you're not sure if you're going to keep at it, my advice would be to spend as low as possible on a camera setup. However, cameras and lenses are expensive AF nowadays, and a cheap camera can be the only reason you qui in the end. My recommendation would be to buy a nicer camera, but from a few generations ago. That will give you all the features you need, but at a lower price. On the other hand, if that's something you KNOW you will be serious about, like filmaking and cinematography, my advice would be to get the most reliable and less risky option. And most of the time, most reilable and less risky option rhymes with warranty so buying brand new makes a lot more sense.

      good recommendation!. also anyone looking to buy a camera should've first used their phone and reach a point of limitation. a limitation they can clearly state. example, i used my phone till i begun doing more low light and was getting unbearable noise then i needed a camera, maybe another person needs to zoom to birds and take photos and the phone couldnt. when people cant clearly state why they need a camera and just because someone says this is right camera or "best vlogging camera", that's when some people buy a camera and not use it after awhile and go back to their phones.

    ((Advice needed)) Excellent video!! Points you're making is exactly why I can't figure out which camera to buy!! The camera bodies that I find that are awesome-sauce are too expensive for my desired budget. I'd love some help. My purposes for a camera: #1 Photographing art/illustrations/paintings etc. to turn into prints and to be used for illustrations in children's books. So - detail and color mean a lot. #2 The ability for the camera and/or lenses to grow without great expense... I may want to use it to photograph a wedding or a wide-angle shot used in real-estate photography. #3 art art art for fun fun fun - like I 'd enjoy using a fun lens like the Lensbaby Composer Pro II with Sweet Optic LBCP. I need something that is weather resistant. I would like one of the "most affordable" cameras with the option of using old and new lenses. I really hope to not get a camera that is on the verge of going extinct. OH - and I would LOVE a camera that is great for smooth waterfall shots!! If I could find a $500-$600 (or so) camera body and lenses from $90-$500 or so - that would be great. I used to do manual 35mm photography before digital cameras - so I like the idea of a mix of manual shots - but fine detail and auto-focus and help for low-light and non-grainy photos is important to me. Can you suggest a camera (or two) and some lenses that head toward my budget? It's okay if its outside my budget, as I can buy lenses over time. Thank you!

    A few good sales on M6ii as a few bodies still around. I may sell my M6 to get a M6ii for higher res. and 4K, as there may be some B roll situations I will need 4K so I can crop in later. As I have a couple of M lenses Sigma 16mm and kit lens 15-45mm, I may not wait for the R10 Canon announcement but who knows. On May 24 it may come out in 6 days. Thanks for review! yes, your advice of always consider what you need camera for is very important. I have FF Nikon D780 camera for other work, but I like M line as second cameras because of the small lenses (great for travel and family walkabout outings) and I could still get with some M lenses on with sales currently on. 11-22mm and 28mm macro interest me in M. For those reading, just remember your second "B" camera (if you have 2) could last you 10 years, especially if it was good to start with.

      theres several beginner camera videos. search youtube. imo key things to learn is, fps, aperture, iso, shutter speed. with those 4 things you can easily use any camera.

    Great tips! Although seeking better lighting means I would miss 100% of my shots as I use a Cannon M50 MKII and even at 9AM in summer their is not enough light to get rid of noise... Which fortunatly my audnce really does not care wether my imanges have noise but still. Also I mainly use it for video on "set" with really good light so their is no noise.

      m50 worse in low light than iphone 13. for low light performance get sony full frame, or apsc, or canon r6. even zv1 is better than m50 in low light.

    • @adrianvanleeuwen
      @adrianvanleeuwen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add any of the Sigma f1.4 lenses with M mount and the low light will be much better with less noise. Sigma has 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm all at F1.4 which is brighter in low light than the kit lens.

      @@adrianvanleeuwen m50 is trash in low light, a lens wouldnt fix that. search youtube for "iPhone 13 Pro vs Canon M50 by Eldar gezalov". m50 was totally destroyed by iphone in low light. the sensor on m50 is old.

    Need your help please. I'm only using my Iphone to take photos and videos, and I decided to get a mirrorless. I learned a lot from your videos, so I made up my mind to going to buy Canon APSC (awesome interface and great autofocus) next week. I'm going to use my camera for holiday trips and some photography. Nothing professional. 80% videos, 20% photos. I'm planning on buying only 2 lenses other than the kit lens which is either Sigma 16mm or Vitrox 23mm, AND Viltrox 33mm. So I'm not really worry if EFM indeed died. I'm planning on shooting in FHD. Here is the thing, since I don't think Canon would release another top line EFM Camera, do you think I should buy M50mII now and upgrade to M6mII 3 years later when 4K matters, or should I just buy M6mII now (even if I only shoot FHD) so I don't have to buy another camera in the next 2-3 years if I decided to shoot 4K?
    The price different in my country is about US$200.
    Btw, is M6mII FHD as good as M50mII ?

      hey, I'm not sure which exact model would be best for you BUT you should know that Canon recently announced the R10, a mirrorless with an APS-C sensor that can record in 4K. It is also relatively cheap for what it offers ($1000 body only). It has the R mount that is not dead (unlike de EF-M). So consider that option as well!
