  • Josef Prchal, MD, University of Utah, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City, UT, discusses the association between defective oxygen-sensing mechanisms and erythrocytosis at a molecular level, including the complex interaction between iron, prolyl hydroxylase, hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and erythropoietin. Dr Prchal explains that understanding this process has allowed for further breakthroughs in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) research and shares his thoughts on the use of phlebotomy in polycythemia vera (PV). This interview took place at the 14th International Congress on Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN Congress) held in New York City, NY.
