@@DaHeis I imagine the audience in this instance was primarily press and industry-adjacent, so they’re going to be more attentive and have a subdued demeanor. It’s less to do with culture and more to do with the type of audience. As for the hype culture, it existed back then. Dreamcast landed like a stone in Japan, but had a lot of momentum leading up to its big 9.9.99 U.S. launch. PS2 had grander hype across the board.
I've seen the media tape multiple times. But this is a brand new experience. It almost like you were in the in the audience. Never knew about the audience tape.
Man this video brings warm memories I couldn't experience, seeing people in old video is weird though. I wonder if Yuji Naka would believe if he was told that in the future, in the next 2 decades, he would ruin his reputation by being arrested for doing insider trading in Square Enix...
I never dawned on me how "Modern Sonic" was just Sega trying to make Sonic more appealing to japanese players, by marketing SA1 as a RPG, and adding virtual pet sim mechanics to the gameplay.
The performance of open your heart they do here fascinates me. Ignoring the fact they were definitely lip syncing, the person in the gold top I find difficult to be Eizo Sakamoto. I’m fairly certain that is Naoto Shibata on bass - who played in the band Anthem along with Eizo - but I find it hard to believe that, that is Eizo there. I’m fairly certain around this time he was performing in Animetal so I find it likely that he was busy around this time. Perhaps Eizo was busy and that’s why they were lip syncing?
These are all very good points. In some ways, the performance seems like it was planned to look cool when edited into the VHS tape rather than be legitimately exciting. Maybe it's just me, but there's this air of forced nature to the way "Eizo" moves around the stage. What really interests me most of all is why they would play the full song, only to replace the lead vocalist in the final game. It's even weirder when you realize, that all advertising up until around October 1998 used this version of the song. It was replaced so suddenly and with so little fanfare that I wonder if the final choice was Sega's or Eizo Sakamoto's.
@@grimpaper You do raise some good points about how they replaced Eizo with Johnny. Eizo did have a little bit of history with recording songs for video games and given the fact Naoto Shibata plays on open your heart there is already a big connection. I do wonder if perhaps SEGA of Japan wanted Eizo as he is a way bigger name in Japan given all his work with Anthem, Animetal, etc, but perhaps SEGA of America heard the demo and said “no get someone else”. Equally, Jun is a self confessed Hardline fan so perhaps he always wanted Johnny but required a version for the event and thus brought in Eizo? Also I do remember watching a clip of Jun performing Dio’s king of rock and roll on his TH-cam channel. The guy who was singing kinda looks like the person in the gold top at the event. I’m also certain I’ve seen footage from around this time and Eizo’s hair was probably about double the length. I’m fascinated though with Eizo’s lower vocals in the song. The ways he sings sections like “thunder, rain and lightning” is so different to anything I’ve ever heard him sing before. I have always wondered if there was a second vocalist who sings with Eizo but went uncredited. Maybe they even altered his vocals to make them sound different for some reason, but that is pure speculation. Edit: I actually found the clip of Jun performing king of rock and roll and the singer - to me at least - looks way more like the person in the gold top at the sonic event. The singer is called Manabu Takaya according to the description. th-cam.com/video/owymZ_OHU8o/w-d-xo.html
@@alissafioravanti832 True, I know this isn't a conclusive answer, but when editing my restoration attempt of the demo, I noticed that Eizo's voice seemed to have multiple layers placed atop each other, with a little bit of what seems like Jun's voice mixed in. perhaps they used the same sound but at different keys? The other thing you may want to check is this earlier version of the demo, which features vocals that have an obvious low pitch editing effect behind them:th-cam.com/video/_vEi3D8pDMM/w-d-xo.html Lastly, you could check out this commercial, as it features an early mix that allows you to hear more of Ezio's raw voice: th-cam.com/video/ZHdZvl0FyCw/w-d-xo.html
@@grimpaper Honestly, listening to the really early demo I could believe Kenichi Tokyo still does the low vocals and maybe the line “it’s just a bad sign” on the Eizo recording. I’m not 100% certian on that but it wouldn’t surprise me. I know Jun said it was Eizo but something about it bugs me. Would love to sit down with Jun. I would ask him so many questions about this song alone. Edit: If I could get the chance to talk to Eizo about this as well I think that would be fascinating.
44:53 Tails dies from the avalanche during the snowboarding demonstration. 😂 Tails: Sonikkuu Notice in every gameplay video, it’s slowed down. Also the green ice pillars and tree branches that were changed in the final.
This moment was probably pretty awkward for the staff team because it ended up spoiling to the audience that the game would have voice acting BEFORE the actual character's voice actor's reveal. I wonder if this incident is what made them make the avalanche no longer kill the player in retail.
Having a Dreamcast as a kid was a weird feeling. Like the console was just too powerful to own. It was literally better than the games you saw at the arcade.

Sonic Adventure was the largest, most ambitious game of its time. The downfall began with Shadow, maybe Heroes, and 06 nearly killed the whole damned franchise. Anyone who defends 06 is just a nostalgia junkie and doesn't understand how much that destroyed Sonic, the effects of which still felt to this day. 06 is the reason for games like Forces, Boom, etc. I actually don't mind Shadow but Heroes is quite frustrating with the number of bugs it has, but both of those games were just minor missteps compared to the utter traincrash that was 06. I hope that Sonic is finally now moving in the right direction with games like Frontiers, Dreamteam, and Superstars, while Unleashed will most likely always be my favourite Sonic game.
@@saltygumballs2621 I rather be a "nostalgia junkie" than have no brain at all, because you can't even separate art from the artist. That and also Japanese audiences are way different to American audiences and even that i highly doubt hype culture was even a thing back in 1998.
