Also I have to ask about going to all that trouble to sterilize and then just use bare hands, unsterile vermiculite/water to dunknroll... I'm thinking glovebox and sterilzed stuff... Just asking as an annoying newb
Not annoying, very observant and great question...By the time they're ready for dunking and rolling the mycelium (white stuff he's trying to get out of the jar) has colonized and become pretty resilient to contamination. Vermiculite has little to no nutritious value to anything, so contamination risk is very low, vermiculite is just there to hold moisture. It's possible to get contamination at any stage of the mushroom growing process, but ya, at that point the mycelium has grown in to a solid hard mass that's good at fighting off most bad stuff. I wouldn't do it without washing my hands first or rub the cake all over the dirty floor, but they should be good.

I microwave these all the time and rarely get a tam. Its usually the LC source and my fault for skipping agar. Dont even need real mason jars, just microwave safe plastic like pp5. You can get SHIPS and air filter patches, but even these dont need to be bought- you can simply melt or drill 2 holes in the lid, stuff polyfill (not cotton-it can grow stuff easier) in one hole for a filter, and use high temp RTV silicone to make a Self Healing Injection Port out of the other hole. Just mushroom the silicone a bit after it starts to set and has a skin, but is still soft inside. You can also fruit single containers (of any size) without a chamber, by leaving it in jar, removing lid and putting a larger container like a water pitcher upside down over it. Or even a ziplock bag.
How would I go about sterilizing them in a pot instead of a pressure cooker? Would I put the jars into the pot of water and boil? Or just hot enough to steam?
@@TeeVee34 Yeah set them in a pot of water with a lid and steam bath for 2.5 hours. The water should be touching the bottom of the jars, do not submerge the jars.
