Five gallon buckets are a gardener's blessing. Ones that are cracked, missing the handle and so on.
One suggestion, try lava for the bottom fill. Better drainage at about a tenth of the weight.

I drill holes on the sides 2" up from the bottom. That way I have a lil reservoir always there during the hot months.
It works for me better than the version I'm seeing and have tried before.

Thanx for the information. I am 75 yrs old, have very little space, and soil I can't get a shovel in. I have been planning all winter to grow some tomatoes for frying, and also for salads in 5 gal buckets. Southwestern NC (a mile from the SC line) has been on a crazy spring this year. 60-80* days and then below freezing at night. And a couple of weekends with1"-2" of snow. A real rollercoaster of weather. I've got the buckets, just need to drill the drain holes in them and fill them. I saw a youtube video that said 5 gal buckets wouldn't work. But they are MY only option. Thank you, for all the info you and your friends have offered. Now I just have to get the weather to cooperate. 😀

You built that pole so strong you could grow Redwoods Lol. I always learn from you and at 70 years old that means a lot to me.. It's so important to keep our minds active as we age. I love learning from you even if I may never apply that knowledge. Just having that knowledge is a blessing. I truly appreciate you and your channel. Good job and looking forward to seeing that plant grow. Stay well my friend.

Good idea. Not likely to blow over with all that weight. I grow stuff in fabric pots in a kiddie wading pool. I cut drain holes 2 or 3 inches up in sidewall of pool so the the pots will be watered from the bottom up. That way your fertilized water stays around for a good while. I use Gro Pro fabric pots which last for years.

Folks, if you want to grow any *heirloom variety* (krim is my all-time favorite) tomato grown them in a soil-free mixture. Do not use a compound with dirt as you can almost bet your life you'll have wilt (fusarium/verticilium - do your homework about these bacteria). This bacteria affects *many* food plants and a lot of other plants including trees. My thousand square foot (traditional) garden has wilt but even that's hit and miss as to affecting the plants and the amount of wilt in the soil from year to year. If you use a grow bucket I suggest you use 1 part peat most and 1 part composted manure with a generous handful of vermiculite with time release fertilizer mixed into it. You can skip all of this by growing a hybrid variety. Hands-down best variety hybrid tomato is Better Boy. Hybrid plants aren't affected by fusarium or verticiliun wilt but check the seed package for details. FYI - I have fairly good success at managing the wilt with in-ground heirloom plants (tomatoes, eggplant, etc) with a once-per-week spraying of my plants with aspirin. One 325 mg aspirin tablet dissolved in a 1 gallon pump sprayer. Spray the plant generously about every week. Don't spray your plants with anything during the heat of the day. Spray them in the early morning to avoid "burning" them. You can also water each plant with this aspirin/water mixture. As I am in Georgia I'll be starting 100+ tomato seeds today for post-easter planting. Good luck to all. FYI - I discovered an exceptional hybrid tomato just last year, the Japanese momotaro. Excellent fruit.

For anyone who uses tidy cat ca litter. The buckets are safe plastic to grow in. Might as well make it work its free when you buy the litter. I am going to try to prune mine more this year. Last years were a bust. Year before didnt taste good. But the years prior were great, I can't figure it out. My soil grew mushrooms so I know it had the nutrients needed. I'm at a loss. Main problems were end rot. My cousin had the same issue. Both in NC one on the coast am I'm in the foothills.

I have had same problems in the past. I researched and am currently using gypsum (calcium) which gives plant nutrients that prevent bloom end rot. Another tip that was given is watering. Your soil can never dry out because it promotes blossom end rot. Hope this helps.

    EXCEPT,
I then set each bucket in 18qt dish pans I got at Walmart & filled
the pans with Miracle Grow tomato plant food mix. Now the
buckets self water & they never run low betwix waterings
    because they have constant water.

I'm trying 5 gallon buckets this year for the first time. My neighbor has a black walnut tree and I think it is murdering my tomatoes that I put in the ground. I built some raised beds last year and the tomatoes did great for a few months, then suddenly died when I think they sent roots down below the raised beds into the soil below with walnut roots in it.
Anyway, an important point when raising tomatoes in container is whether you have determinate or indeterminate varieties. Determinate will be much more manageable. So of course I have indeterminates because I don't heed my own advice 😂 Your Parks Whopper are indeterminate; how did they do? Were you able to keep them under control?
I haven't decided yet whether to stake mine or just let them sprawl across the ground. I gonna set the buckets out in the garden in the pumpkin patch. Pumpkins don't seem to be bothered by the walnut tree because it's pretty far away.

i strip the leave off about 4' high and take off any suckers, can clone the suckers for a fall crop my tomato plants are naked with a few leaves. i grow fruit not leaves. This also give the plant air and sun light and it help spot tomato worms with a black light at night ~ some time bamboo stakes are hard to fine, what makes another good tomato stakes is 3/8" rubar. This will last a life time cut them 5' tall The roof it made from 6 ~ 7' tee post 4 corner, and 2 between the middle and i use hog wire for the top for the plants to lay down on . They will grow up but the weight of the tomato will make them come back down, You just go around under it picking the hanging tomato's

    • @bentnickel7487
      @bentnickel7487 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Three years ago was my first time. I planted 5 single plant buckets. I chose the little cherry tomatoes and had "hundreds" of tomatoes. Gave away two thirds of my yield, sharing was my favorite part. I found that watering each day allowed me to more closely watch for bugs and I didn't drill holes for drainage. The ENTIRE bucket filled up with hair like roots, to my surprise. The growing season lasted 100 days. It was a terrific experience, that I would highly recommend, but if you're single, don't plant five plants, you'll throw away more than you can eat. :-) ;-) :-D

Kevin, they make tomato cages that are made for tomato plants. The cage starts with a 4" circle and then 10" up there is another wire circle but this one is about 4" bigger in diameter and the another 10" up another wire circle which is 4" bigger. The cage becomes an inverted cone that you feed the plant up through the cage which helps the plant stay off the ground and it keeps the tomatoes from rotten in on the vine.

I got so annoyed with those scrawny wire tomato supports that I welded up two Eifel tower looking units about five feet high. Painted them yellow and hoping for a really good harvest later this summer.

Tomato leaves are edible. You would have to eat a solid pound of leaves to harm to you. You should have plenty of IRON in those tomatoes and you added about 10 lbs of weight. I use bamboo , old fishin rods, garden stakes. Seems to be over kill and you forgot the drain holes.

Soil being used says:" In ground" on the bag. A potting soil should be used for potting tomatoes. Also I prefer an organic soil for my tomatoes.

In hundred of videos using a container bucket. Regardless of its size. You would never use garden soi in a container bucket. The dirt is too heavy. You want fluffy soil. ( These are my two cents) Trust me. But, let us know your end product, who are watching your video.

A video of this nature should be concise and precise. All the useful info here could have been said in 5 minutes instead of 20. The welding was a waste of time. The info was useful, but the video was wasteful.
