great video, I collect all my egg shells thru the year and then put them in my blender till they are powder and use in or around my tomato plants. Lots of calcium and some people use Tums for the tummy and that's more calcium. Keep up the good work

I do exactly that aswell with the eggshells.
I also add used coffee grounds, chopped up banana skins & Epsom salts.

Nice video. I've been growing my tomatoes in tubs/buckets for years, with great harvests. However, I don't put holes in the bottom of my buckets, I only drill one hole in the side about 4-5 inches above the bottom, and I put a section of perforated french drain in the bottom covered by cheap soil cover, and then fill the bucket with soil (with fertilizer powders mixed in), and a 2-inch plastic PVC pipe stuck in the bucket on one side into the french drain. I only water into the PVC pipe, never on top. Since the water and nutrients can't escape through the bottom, I only need to water once every 5-7 days into the PVC pipe. The water in the bottom "wicks" up through the soil to the roots and also forces the roots to stretch out and grow, providing better support and feed to plant and fruit growth. The only risk is heavy rain, which could enter the top of the bucket and drown the plant, but I cover the soil with straw mulch and then a plastic sheet to keep excess water out. I've had monster harvests ever since I adopted this method. It's called "wicking tubs" and several videos exist on youtube to explain it.

Very good video! Ive been growing tomatoes in buckets for over 20 years. Over the years I have learned that determinate or bush varietys do better in buckets although the smaller cherry type of indeterminate varieties do well also. Last year I installed an automatic irrigation system which made caring for them so much easier. I usually plant 20-25 buckets each year and some of the buckets are over 10 years old and going strong. So much easier planting in buckets than tilling the soil and fighting the weeds.

@@sncddb I just went to Home Depot and got the timer and 1/2 inch tubing along with some 1/4 inch tubing plus fittings and drippers. Run 1/2 inch alongside your buckets and at each bucket attach a length of 1/4 in tubing with 1/4 in connecter with the dripper. All you have to do to make the 1/4 to 1/2 connection is punch a hole in the 1/2 tube and the 1/4 connecter just snaps into the hole. Home Depot will have the hole puncher there with the other items that you need to get. FYI 1/2 tubing will supply 200 gals of water per hour up to 200 ft at 25psi. The drippers come in 3 sizes 1 gal, 2gal and 4gal per hour. Its very simple to install just cut tubing with knife or pruning shears and all 1/2 fittings are just push in or shark bite type fittings. There's lots of vids on TH-cam. Hope this helps some.

I bake my rinsed, empty organic egg shells at 225° for about 20 min to prevent mold setting before I use them. When I get enough, I grind them in the blender into a powder and use it to sprinkle on my plants. It saved my tomato plants last summer! It was my first attempt, so I didn't prep them as I should have. Since organic dry milk would be expensive & hard to find, I'll stick to my ground eggshells, but this year I will put some in the hole with the other nutrients before putting the plant in the bucket, as you demonstrated. (I do plan to make my buckets self wicking, though, because it's so dry here.) Thanks for the info!

I bought a bag of oyster shell to provide plants with calcium. It is the kind that you'd buy to feed chickens, to make their eggs strong. I mix that in with my soil, before planting tomatoes. It breaks down slowly, and helps to prevent blossom end rot. So far, I have had good results. One bag will last a very long time!

Interesting approach to growing tomatoes in pots. A suggestion for you and others who might like to do this ... rather than using potting trays on the bottom of your buckets, put a tittle effort into digging about 4 to 6 inch hole to set your buckets in.
And when I grow things (iike tomatoes) in several buckets, I like to do small experiments with different buckets of the same plant. I happened to do this with epsom salts with four tomato plants several years ago. Two with it and two without. I wanted to see if using epsom salts was really worth it. My results was that it made absolutely no difference.

Dude, I've been growing tomatoes four 40 years, including Cherokee Purples. Buy a posthole digger and put the potting soil in the hole with the tomato seedling. Epsom salt provides Calcium which prevents blossom end rot.

I put an egg below the plant and they go NUTS. Put a little crack in it. I like this idea too. 👍🏼. Calcium nitrate basically is an egg. I think that’s why I work so well

  • @domenicozagari2443

You could drill the holes higher to hold more water in reserve.

@abc68099 Its to keep the water longer in the pot, the roots will suck up the water, the water dose not harm them.

I’ve seen other videos that suggest peat moss. Does it benefit the plant or does the soil do the job?

    • @danielsbackforty8094
      @danielsbackforty8094  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The peat just makes soil loser and helps it not to pack.

if you add some sulfur - your tomatoes will taste better. the sulfur gives a tomato a tang to go with the sweetness. I put the hole in the bucket just a bit higher. And I fill the very bottom with rocks.

I used these buckets last year and they’re not food safe. Plants did not do well.

safe plastics by number 1,2,4,5. Look at the bottom of the bucket to find the number

That’s a great tip. I save my egg shells. Wash, grind and make calcium powder...excellent for plants. Also save banana peels. Dry and grind to potassium powder.

Those blue Loews buckets are UV sensitive and just disintegrate after a year or so. The orange buckets last much longer.
