It gave me pleasure to see the video. I found out that producers put inhibitors to the potatoes sprout. I'm going to try if I can grow at least a few potatoes. I have space to put a good container and a good substrate for them. Thank you!
Thank you, just found your site and subscribed. I totally agree with the craziness of our society planting these huge lawns and spending hours of their life time hours mowing them. We only have so many life hours in each of our lives and I don't want to waste my life doing that when I could use that time to be more productive no matter what we choose to do with it. This is excellent! I learned a lot and know I know why mine didn't grow a few years ago. I also just learned that we can survive on just kale and potatoes!!!! So plant lots of both!
You can't just live on cow and potatoes you'd be dead within 2 months. Or you have serious medical problems.

@@cerenademe9433 yeah I remember it turned out to be a hoax. See there's several vitamins and minerals you can't get from just eating potatoes or fruits and vegetables for that matter. One of them is B12 which is essential for brain function. Honestly, even simple common Sense would tell you that that story was a hoax.

Potatoes actually do provide most of what you need-it’s pretty fascinating when you research it.
I’d be sure to grow beans & peas as well as leafy greens.
In a survival situation, potatoes are one of the top crops and have kept many cultures alive during times of famine.

I'm looking at growing potatoes inside this winter. Current temps indoors are 70 degrees, and a few of my potatoes from the store already have started chitting. Would it be advisable to put a small fish carcass in with the soil? I can't get topsoil quite yet, but will be building raised beds this winter. For now I'm thinking I'll just start a compost pile and a couple indoor buckets.
So you placed 3 chits in the 1 bucket.. how many potatoes will that one bucket yield?
Also, I planted probably 10 chits in a half whisky barrel ..
Unfortunately I didn't really read up first and didn't layer up after they started peaking through.. my sprouts are several inches above the dirt now.. can I still layer up carefully around them? I have enough room to the top of my barrel to do so..

Planted today! Inspired by this video!!! Did everything as you recommend, base layer of soil, starters (chitted), then 4-6 more inches, now just going to give it some time to see some of the sprouts coming through.... how long do you think until we'll need to fill the rest of the soil in? BTW... GLORIOUS video! Exactly what I needed to know without extra fluff!

update: for the red pitatoes, filled in the rest of the soil at two weeks from planting, for the other varieties they cleared the initual layer of soil at the three week mark! Very healthy!!!

What I do in the hot summer months with russet potatoes is grow them in a huge 55 gallon trash can.
1, get a large plastic CHEAP trash can and pop drainage holes in the bottom.
2, cut a fist sized square at the base.
3, stick a brick there to block it up.
4, put potatoes in the bottom and cover with dirt.
5, add water.
Within days you'll notice potato 'eyes' poping out. As the plants grow up cover with more dirt and water about once heavily a week or until soil is dry.
The results are quite astonishing because russet potatoes are not only tough as all hell they're disease resistant and thrive in poor soil! I got potatoes so big I couldn't even pull them out!
Can you say long from planting to harvest did it take? Were you happy with how many potatoes grew in the can?
I found a potato in my cupboard and it’s got looooonnnggg roots on it but I don’t know what way I’m meant to plant it 😂 they look like roots but I’m not sure because they come up from the potato and then go down towards the potato and wrap around it.
yes, those are little rhizomes/tubers growing off of the original potato! cool isn't it?

I threw some soft potatoes into my compost bin. A month later I have sprouting potatoes in my bin, so today I transplanted them into a bucket that I drilled bottom holes in with the soil from the compost bin.
What I want to know is after the bush has grown up how will I know when to harvest?
I must have had tomato seeds in there too because my soil produces lots of tomato plants...
and we need to know how many potatoes you get in one bucket?
I know you've probably found out by now, but most potatoes should be harvested when the visible part of the plant is dying.
When your potatoes come up through soil say 2" tall with tiny leaves, do i cover them up with more soil or wait till taller and put soil up around plant covering stem.

Should 45 degree avg nightly temps be aimed for around expected harvest time? Because in Texas, there aren't 60 days straight of 45F weather. Like in the fall for instance, I could START them when the avg nightly temps are 45F-ish (november), but by the time they're to finish, it'd be much colder. If I finish them in November, then I'd have to start them when the avg nightly temps are around 70F. Shame, I want to start now with some potatoes I have but the avg nightly temps are 77F
He just means coming out of winter, wait until the temp is at least 45F at night or they'll freeze. They should be fine in warmer temps as long as they aren't getting completely blasted by heat and sun through the day. If it's pretty hot, just keep an eye on them in case they need some shade or more frequent watering.

Hey, very nice information. What is the best time and temp for growing them in Canadian temperature. I am in Toronto. Do I keep it covered at night just to save it from sudden drop in temperature. Please advise.
Hey from the midwest! did you ever get your answer,?Were still pretty cold here at night and I want to avoid losing potatoes over it
Main thing seems to be to keep the potatoes above freezing, and usually by the time the nighttime lows are above 46F / 8C, you're unlikely to suddenly dip back below freezing.
I do actually put digital thermometers in my garden overnight (usually up on a brick and/or inside a plastic bag so they don't get too much condensation. It won't effect the temperature reading) to see if things are getting chilly. If it gets too cold, I'll put a cover over.
If the prediction is for near freezing temps, I'll put a cover over.
If the cover doesn't seem to keep things warm enough, I'll realize that I planted too early and make a note of it for next year. 😕

Can you tell us how many pounds you got out of that bucket? I've read that you're not supposed to plant seed potatoes closer than 12". Thanks for any update.
To anyone reading this a year later, I wouldn't worry too much about exact spacing. "Disperse gardening" is when you kind of let your garden run a little bit wild and overgrow. Just throw some potato sprouts into the soil and let them grow. I have two pepper plants growing right on top of each other right now (I waited too long to separate them) and they're doing just fine.

I'm in PA and our weather is sooo bi polar
I planted mine in bucket this morning but next few nights will go down to 35
Then 45 on Sunday for lows
So should I bring them in those nights?
35 is pushing it a little but should be just fine for anything warmer than that

I read or saw awhile back though you can take potatoes but keep the roots or whatever in there so they keep growing again? Is that true

My question is .....will I still get potatoes if I hill them up after they popped through ? I added about ten inches of soil on top then will add more and mulch. Thanks ! Any help appreciated !
Coming to you a little late, but shouldn't be a problem. Just add more dirt or dig up and plant a few inches deeper. Anything underground turns into roots, so you will be fine.
In the case of a container like what he says, you actually WANT to start at the bottom, then add soil as the leaves start coming up. This gets a DEEP root system throughout the ENTIRE bucket. Anywhere that roots grow, you will get potatoes, as potatoes, by definition, are part of the root system underground. The idea is to have a bucket full of potatoes from just the few cut sections that he started with.
