One additional tip I could give is to use old cable to route the new one in. It is especially useful on sports bikes when you have to get rid of fairings to even get to the cable, and some cables tend to even go through the frame. In most cases simply taping new cable end to end is enough. But beware it's possible to scratch something along the way when, like in case of this Boneville cable is forged.
This, bit of tape goes a long way.

I work as a mechanic at a Honda main dealer and even there I try to give new riders advice, we get a lot of new riders bringing bikes in to adjust chains at £15 a time, I always try to show them how to do it, some we never see again because they took the advice and some understandably would rather have us do it because they have 0 mechanical knowledge at all, but I like being able to show people the simple things and hopefully save them some money in the process

You Sir are a shining light.. that's exactly what every dealer could do, we live in a digital age now and this generation of new riders just haven't had the inspiration to fix things while growing up.. not because nobody cares, but because things in general are less "repairable".. its a throw away age, so the mentality doesn't take route, it's more likely they'll just throw things out and buy new... But costs aside, Main dealer technicians are possibly the most trusted and knowledgeable people available, so a lesson from YOU... is ten times the lesson from a YT video aye.! "Young rider's" 62 year old dad appreciates this video immensely! We have a crappy Chinese 125cc dirt bike and the replacement cable is $60 canadian, but with a huge 10% discount if I give them a 5 star google rating and the customer service rep would appreciate if I specifically mention his name! Now I hope I can source a universal cable for half the price! Wonderful job. Lots of us old and young first-timers need simple diy videos like yours!

I like to encourage others to just try... because while certainly you can save a lot of money on many tasks, it's also a matter of taking pride in doing the work yourself, and making sure the work is done properly to your own high standards.

I’ve saved thousands of US dollars over the years by doing as much simple maintenance as I can. Oil/filter changes, chain maintenance are two things every biker should know how to do. My Triumph dealer wants $120 dollars for an oil change. I can do it for $60, including OEM filter.
Yip, cheers D&P 👍 I've only got push bike and car at the moment but being able to replace cables and basic stuff like handlebars and tape, saddle adjusts, brake align and that sort of thing will save loads of money and give you a sense of satisfaction and confidence too. Recently serviced my headset and freehub bearings too which was a bit scary, but I see how it works now and won't drop 50 tiny bearing balls all over the garage floor again 🤭 I had new ones to put in so no harm. 🙃🥳

Brilliant Dell , as a Triumph street twin rider will help no end. I just done my first service as bike 3 years old now and out of warranty . Oil and filters ,coolant change , chain adjust and lube reckon I saved £150 thanks to you and Stuart filling ham given me the confidence to do it.

This type of really basic stuff is what got me started watching your channel, and honestly gave me the confidence to work on my own bike. It is SO IMPORTANT that people who WANT to do it can find the information. Once they can see how easy it is to do, they will try. And by doing small things, you learn you can do bigger things. Build that confidence up.
Now I am bidding on wrecked bikes to see if I can fix them up... I have a different problem. :)
Thanks buddy, am glad you enjoy the videos, and good luck with the wrecked bike projects, but if I may offer one caution to be conscious of any difficulties once they're finished, here in England bikes that have been officially written off and sold by insurance companies can be difficult to insure and re-register and more importantly, difficult to sell... maybe it's different there, but just a consideration maybe before you throw money at it! It's great if the bikes are purely for you and you end up with something that cost you far less than a clean one would have, but if they're to sell on it's worth being aware of those kind of issues... have a great week, ride safe!
@@Moonfleet41 same here. Very difficult to register for street use. I am actually bidding on some offroad only bikes right now, so no worries on plates here for those.
Every now and then I find a bike on my "wish list" that I would keep just for myself. I have never won one of those, because usually someone else also wants that bike to collect. But its fun to look.

Hi, this video was extremely helpful. I'm off to the Pyrenees tomorrow, with my 2006 Triumph Scrambler 865 and yesterday discovered my clutch cable was starting to fray. After a bit of a panic, I got a new cable couriered to me overnight from Fowlers of Bristol (I live in Plymouth) and fitted it today, following your excellent and clear guidance. My old, frayed clutch cable may have lasted the 10 days away or given way on a mountain hairpin, who knows? At least I know it won't now. Many thanks.

I keep videos like this one in my favourites so I can rewatch if I'm going to do some work on the bike. big savings over dealership prices when you can do wee bits n bobs yourself, n videos like this just show you how easy it is

Thank you for the video! Even we have learned this many years ago, it was worth to look the movie. By the way, when i drove my Honda CB500 Four forthy years ago, I helped to a Suzuki GT500 driver with my set of steel wires and screwable nipples to repair his bowden cable.

Hi 👋 please help 🙏..I have truxton 2011 year 20000km. My speedometer started losing connection fom time to time and when I turn steering to the right side then its working,so I taken out head lamp and check all connectors and whirring and everything looks fine, but when i moved whirring in front corner of fuel tank than speedometer started to work, then I opend whirring (40 cm from lamp) and could not find broken whirring or rust,but from that moment I opened wires speedometer stopped working and don't have any readings on it..did you have any problems like that? Please help 🙏 😢 don't know where to start ? I would really appreciate some advice from you Del. Love your videos..Thanks and greetings from Norway .

Dear Del… , this is very important, teach them well. Believe it or not, there are even so called dealers out there who promise you wonders within no time and ask for little money, but they have no clue , what their mechanics are capable of or not.
A friend picked up her 883 and the clutch cable was treated so bad by not checking if you could still steer properly from one side to the other… it was so bad under tension when the front was relaxed to the left while parking … such an easy task but we need you and your way of teaching !!! Keep on such lessons and thank you on behalf of all the new guys out there !!
Lesson learned yesterday started my 600 and was checking a repair on my exhaust.
All fine I set off bike was not pulling right but not that bad as I could only do 30 anyway.
On way home it felt jumpy then was reviving at 2.5 not my normal tick over of 1.5.
I had a similar problem years ago on my 250 that time it was the cluth plates.
I thought this is all I need as I no longer have anywhere in doors to work on it.
Got the bike onto my front garden then noticed the problem.
I didnt push the choke all the way back doh!
I'm 61 been riding since 16 years old.
So your never to old to cock things up.

couldn’t stress this enough, if you own a bike, get the shop manual for it. Once you’ve reviewed the steps that the manual prescribes, the TH-cam videos make 1000% more sense and will stop you from the pit falls that all bikes are adjusted the same. I can’t say that I had any luck with any of the slinky glide products though. The throttle cables literally wouldn’t glide (ironically enough) and the clutch cable was inexplicably 30 mm too short. Had to clean and lube the old throttle cables and sourced a new OEM cable when I did this job.
More than anything though, it’s great to provide people with the drive and interest for doing these jobs themselves! 👍
Yeah, you're right buddy, the service manual is your Bible, even if you're isn't laid out with step by step guides and instruction, then at least it will still have all the correct settings, tolerances and specifications.. and setting things up right is half the battle. I was adjusting my clutch on both edges and now when I switch the bike on or change gears it doesn’t move nor stall. Any clues?

Yeah, you're right, throttle cable are a lot more fiddly... All things get easy with practice though aye mate, at least you take the job on and don't pay through the nose for someone else to do it.!

I have a '94 Kawa Eliminator and in my way to remove the carb for some adjustments and cleaning, I had to move the clutch cable.

Excellent as always Del. And you are absolutely right, I know that the dealers are there to make a profit however outright taking people to the cleaners just isn't right.
Yeah, you're right, It's a hard debate buddy, they have a right to a living, and a qualified technician commands a healthy salary, then of course all the other overheads... no quibble with the level of dealer bills, they're all perfectly explainable, but with really simple tasks like this, you can side step some hefty bills for a little time and effort yourself..!

I appreciate your detailed videos. with 50 K mikes things are needing to be replaced. Clutch cable broke and I now can fix it. Hardest part was finding one in the USA, so I ordered a spare.
I'm a beginner and mines snapped while riding. So depressing. But it seems easy to replace. Thanks for the video 👍

The reason is that I would like to add raisers and the std ones are too short. Hope this is ok with you in case you can point me to some vendors.

@@garya3056 The only two times i have dropped the tank pump assemblies out is on a Sporty and a Road Glide.. yours most likely lifts out the top like all big twins, the lower half of the internal assembly is hinged, and you need a small screw driver to unlatch it, and then it folds out straight from it's 'dogleg' position, and can be withdrawn.. sadly this was before i make videos... but this link may help you buddy..!? th-cam.com/video/a4gJuZG8wtM/w-d-xo.html

Forgot to mention. I went to a dealership in Bromley and they charged me £130 + vat! Looked online and you can buy throttle cables for as cheap as £18 for a RE interceptor OEM!!! Always taking from the small guy. I think next time I'm going to have a go myself. Cheers del, all the best 👌
Yeah, that's mad money aye, sadly it's no robbery, running a bike dealership is never ending outlay and technicians command a decent salary (which is as it should be).. but for simple little jobs, we sometimes don't need them and can manage these little things at home. !

Hi buddy, both the OEM one here and the Slinky are similar construction, and any brand new cable will be fine installed without pre-oiling, It's after that where you need to make a choice, if your bike never goes out in the rain, then it won't ever really make much difference, but on the other hand, if you ride every day in all weathers, then it's beneficial to oil it and keep the inside cable from corroding.

A little oil will always help. Back in the 70's with my trials bike I used to turn the slot in the handlebar adjuster upwards and add a few drops of oil inside, leave it overnight. Because in trials I rode through streams, a little emulsified oil wept from the lower end of the cable. Same with the front brake cable (remember them) !

Hi Norman, thank you for your kind words, I actually made that engine guard from scratch myself using sheet metal and welded the frame in behind it... there is an early video series on it in the Triumph Scrambler Playlist on the Channel... you can buy them and they're easy to fit, but they don't come right up the front of the engine in that way!

Great simple skills video Del, especially for a Triumph rider! The only question that came to my mind was when should a clutch cable be replaced?
Hi Wayne, a clutch cable does a lot of work, and will wear over time, so if you ever see a stray wire that's broken away from the end, that will make it weaker, or when it gets stiff and notchy.. they're consumable like tyres and brake pads, just a bit less often.. so keep an eye on them buddy.

Well you don't know, my eldest is into trials bikes. She loves it!!!
In my experience cheap clutch cables been always snapping, 3 of them, so now I'm sticking to OEM staff, never ever had a problem. Funny enough it's been snapping on all of my 3 bikes . Don't go cheap on your bike and it's not going to go cheap on you.
I own a 2020 Bonneville Speedmaster that I put over 57,000 miles on and prior to watching this video, I had no idea how to change my clutch cable, so thank you for showing us!

Not dumb at all mate, just use a light machine oil, something like 3-in-1... or even WD40 at a push.

Hey buddy, yeah easy enough, and it's a lot more slick now.. the old one has become a bit stiff, could have maybe cleaned it through and oiled it, but it was 8 years old, so easier just to chuck a new one on..

We decided to replace it as Penny's bike spends long periods sitting still, sometimes months on end, and it had just dried out and gotten stiff inside and we wanted to make the lever action as silky and smooth as possible, the new cable always works wonders! Yeah, you can clean them up again and lube them, and that's fine it works, but not quite as well as a brand new cable obviously... and as I said in the video, it's Penny's bike, it's very special to her, so why not invest the money!
thanks mate,sadly gotta take it to dealer for 40k service valve clearances etc. but have done all minor services every 5000k since the 20k service.so have saved a bunch of cash thanks to your vids ,even did the chain and sprockets which seemed a bit daunting but your instruction was easy to follow on the bonnie.so hopefully no big $ probs at service time.then will do oem clutch cable aswell now i know how its done.shouldnt be any probs bike runs great and gets lots of love.lol. you guys take care and stay safe.cheers
