They are called Smashing Pumpkins. At some point everyone started to add the 'The' to their name whenever they were being introduced or talked about and they just went along with it.
Wild to me people don’t like his voice. His voice is perfect for this Shoegaze and Dream Pop sound. I mean….its subjective…I get it. But I absolutely love his vocals.
Honestly pretentiousness is why even as a huge music fan I RARELY discuss it with anybody because 90% of the time the conversation will boil down to “music was better when I was young”.
Tbf, even while acknowledging the "back in my day" phenomenon, there are some pretty strong consensuses about the "best" eras of music. Not many people would claim that the era of ragtime or marching band was great vs. blues or jazz, and people are more apt to have a strong opinion that the peak rock eras are stronger than the peak contemporary ones.
Great review. Very accurate on the drums being exceptional. Jimmy Chamberlain, the SPs drummer, actually started out as a Jazz drummer and apparently had never played rock until he joined the band. There are some people who say he's the really secret behind the band, and even Billy said he was the most musically gifted member of the band. I am just to throw it out there that you check out GISH and Pisces Iscariot before MCIS. Gish is also produced by Butch Vig, and was done before Never Mind came out. Gish doesn't have quite the same full Guitar sound that is SD, nor is it quite as catchy or commercial. However, it has great rock riffs and songs with multiple guitar solos. I put it up there as almost as good as SD. FINALLY, if you do wish to explore their sound beyond MCIS, their two other best albums IMO are Zeitgeist (2006 or 2007) and Aghor Mhori Mei (2024). Both are rock driven albums.
You’ve tapped into the, “back in my day…” demographic. Happens to most everyone 40+. It’s a time capsule for one’s best years. But god dammit when I hear a trap beat, I wanna smash my player to bits!
I think Mellon collie is even better. My favorite double album of all time. It pulls me into a dream world and makes me feel young and magical again The smashing pumpkins not being in the rock hall of fame is why I can’t take the hall of fame seriously
Cherub Rock is one of the greats to me! I can see not caring for Corgan’s voice because there’s a handful of songs I feel the same about. Cherub Rock isn’t one of them though.
That's entirely fair. It has grown on me a tiny bit on repeat listens because the instrumental is incredible, and I don't mind the vocals quite as much
I'll throw in my 2 cents in favor of Sweet Sweet. It's such a consciously upbeat song, like it sees the darkness and chooses another way. It almost demands to be supported. Which I do.
agree with others about Cherub Rock being one of the standouts. Good score though. Personally id give it a 9.6 or 9.7..one if the best rock records ever created. 8.9 is fair though and i bet the score will increase upon repeated listens
Haha… I’ve got a similar thing in Thom Yorke’s vocals. The band’s in a groove and in comes this weird siren wail. It’s like voice-edging with no finish😆Cool take overall.
Seems you appreciate the drumming of Jimmy Chamberlain. Well, when the Pumpkins broke up, Billy and Jimmy started a new band called Zwan. There was only 1 album but the first track is a standout performance by Jimmy for his drumming. The song is called Lyric. th-cam.com/video/CwmUMySSNQc/w-d-xo.html

Tragic rename, Smashing Pumpkins is a perfect band name
Crazy just watching a band completely win someone over. It’s like your first sip of beer when it’s strange and maybe a little off putting at first.
Good review. Hope you like MCIS if you're ever up for it.

The Smashing Pumpkins came out during grunge area but they have never actually been grunge thier sound is so unique it never fit into any one genre
19:39 where talking Heads a band known for their live performances or is it just because you like them?
Just because I really like them, and their live shows looked hype as hell
It's in the top 3 along with "Temple of the Dog" and Soundgarden "Superunknown"
Great review.

It isn't grunge 😂
