There was something magical about this time period in Billy's songwriting. Almost like he was tapping into some mystical power and you can hear the intense emotions come out through the various layers, vocally and sonically
Bravo for completing the whole album! What a trip. For a bit of context; this was released in the era of CD’s so it was a “double CD” album. The 28 songs were split evenly between the two discs at 14 tracks a piece. Disc 1 was titled, “Dawn to Dusk” and Disc 2, “Twilight to Starlight “. So it Definitely makes sense that it was intended to be digested in two parts. Also, on the song “Take me down” you are hearing the second guitarist James Iha singing. You also hear him and the rest of the band join on “Farewell and Goodnight” including both the drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain and bassist D’arcy Wretzky. Thanks for the great reaction!
I heard this in about 1996. Someone at college gave me the double cassette to listen to. It really did change my life! I enjoyed your reactions. A lot of them tallied with my own. Cupid de Locke is a strange one. I’ve grown to really like it as I’ve got older. It’s got a dreamlike quality that benefits from closing your eyes and just letting the soft rhythm flow into you. The bookending of the album with piano really appeals to me, too. Tonight Tonight is my favourite song ever. It just never loses its power. The galloping drums, the strings, the pace changes. It’s incredible. The album as a whole is a showcase of the range of the band. If you get the chance, seek out the B sides from this era. There’s some beautiful tracks out there that would have made the primary album tracklisting of many other bands.
middle school me was addicted to this album and almost all smashing pumpkins albums i still know most songs by heart, i’ve moved on but still love the reminder of my early music that got me into music :D
We’re watching. SP fans will always be on the full journey. We’re here end to end. And we’re loving watching your mind get blown. Fan here for >30 years & been dragging others down the Sp rabbit hole the entire time. 😊🤘
Love that you recognize the versatility.. the most versatile band in the history of music Be ready the change gears when you do adore.. it’s still brilliant
2024. Music has changed, the way we listen to it has changed, but can you imagine a double album with 28 songs that i dont skip... it's this album, a masterpiece of my beloved 90's ^^
Fantastic album, my absolute favourite. It only gets better the more you listen to it too. The soundscapes are incredibly evocative to me, and works really well with the amazing cover art and album booklet. A lot of the sounds really reminds me of watching the starry night sky. As much as I love Adore (their next album), I think you might enjoy Machina and Zeitgeist more.
Watched the whole thing. Love the album. I can always tell when you like a song before you say. Haha. I remember I forced my mom to let me stay home from school so I could go to tower records right when it opened to buy the album. I listened to it on repeat all day. So obsessed. If you like their rock side… then I’d suggest Machina The Machines of God next or find a remixed version of a Zeitgeist. It’s on TH-cam. It’s amazing as well. Lots of energy. I can send you a link if you like. Remixed version is better because the original had the vocals extremely loud…. The remixed version fixes that issue.
Awesome reaction! Second half slows down in some ways but songs are pretty much top tier through Ode or Love. THen the rest are better than filler. even the songs I'm lukewarm on are imaginative, and written and performed well. And they absolutely balance out the bangers to give my ears a chance to catch their "breath!". Glad you caught the SP vibe! Adore is a "Mid" LP. Has more a dreamy/electro/sinister "Cupid de Locke" vibe. I'd pass and go straight into Machina. Two more classic, epic LPs to check out that carry the Pumpkins hard rock/dream metal vibe. Super-highly recommend: Hum, "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" Silversun Pickups, "Carnavas"
You owe yourself the spectacle of this live version of "An Ode to No One" during their "final" show when they officially broke up in 2000. th-cam.com/video/XA0sNVueB78/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Here's a controversial idea, which no one else has done: Since you liked this, especially the variety, why not jump right to the most recent SP album; the 33-song triple album, 'Atum'. :) If you're thinking you'd love to hear more of the Mellon Collie- type 90s hard rock stuff, you're in for a disappointment: after that, Billy announced that rock was dead and left that style behind, d'oh - although they have done heavy rock stuff since, it's only one of the the things they do. And the point of Mellon Collie was to stop them being pigeonholed as a typical alt rock band anyway..
@@adamfstewart81 The Aeroplane Flies High is a collection if B-sides (and covers), like Pisces Iscariot, so it depends what the point is. Yes, it would showcase more of what the Pumpkins were capable of, but I would like to do the same thing with a modern album. No, Atum wouldn't disappoint. It's quality all the way and great songwriting in a variety of styles so is very impressive, and would put to bed right away - for a new fan - the idea that all Billy's best work is in the past.
@@adamfstewart81 I admit, though, that I do have an agenda: I enjoy reaction videos but I'm really tired of 95% of them being a band's old 'classic' stuff and all the comments saying "only OLD Metallica / Sepultura / Alice in Chains / Smashing Pumpkins / REM / (insert others here) stuff is good" .. which isn't true at all for any of those bands, you know?
Watching this back I was definitely feeling the alcohol by the end of the album 😂

I’ll never forget being 15 years old and having my mind absolutely blown away by this album
I had both albums on cassette and, no joke, carried them with my walkman every where I went for a year.

A song for every emotion you could ever possibly feel. Truly epic, one of the all-time great masterpieces.

Here Is No Why may be my favorite Smashing Pumpkins track
That song is so amazing.
Absolute top 5 for me
Same here, prob my all time favorite of theirs, right next to violet Rays and mayonnaise
Love that you recognize the versatility.. the most versatile band in the history of music

Sorry don’t forget to review pisces iscariot!
Also, sorry but don't also forget Gish. Thanks and take care.

You want more of that ending part on Thru the Eyes of Ruby? th-cam.com/video/hp6NIjg7Kjg/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy!
Thanks it's a beautiful little piece
I Would had same idea
So much soul and beauty in Mellon Collie. Rolling Stone did it dirty putting it only in the lower half of its GOAT list.
100% agreed however Rolling Stone are fuckwits anyways and should not be taken seriously imho so it really doesnt matter
Man this album brings so many memories, was 13 when it came out. Still a classic

enjoyed the reaction kasper! this album is on another level. a masterpiece. thru the eyes of ruby..forever 💥

An incredible album. A band at their creative peak, and Corgan knew it. Siamese Dream followed by this, two of the greatest albums of all-time.
We Only Come Out At Night is a fucking masterpiece.
Take me down is the guitarist James Iha singing.

in the arms of sleep is the best song on this album in my opinion it makes me cry almost everytime
The night has come to hold to you young, young fella. Nice job. Nice audio fidelity the , sound popped.
Jane's Addiction. The song 'Jane Says' at least.
try pisces iscariot ( b side of gish and siamese dream)
*fire*
First ones my fave
Again, if you like their harder stuff you should definitely check out zeitgeist, the remastered version. It's a great rock album.
nice vid ❤
The more you listen to the Pumpkins, the more your least favorites become your favorites.
You owe yourself the spectacle of this live version of "An Ode to No One" during their "final" show when they officially broke up in 2000.
