I caught a break working at western states when i came back and was fortunate enough to work under Adept Ape for over a year at western states. He is knowledgable, considerate and caring of not only the people he works with but most importantly the customer. What is the best bang for their buck? What is the TRUE REPAIR? What is best all around? Honestly. This Muth** Fu**** knows!!!! I can’t believe i had the GODDA** HONOR to work under him. I learned more in 3 months than i did a year plus at kenworth. He’s a freaking genius. I am honored to work under him, learn, and Most importantly call him friend. (Which I have less than 3). I parted ways before josh when trucks got slow and regret dearly not learning from one of the best in the field. I used to open his day with “I have an apprentice question” only to be greeted with “a question is simply a question, and an answer is simply an answer” he is humble, he is an incredible teacher, and he is HONEST. He would answer my question and actually TEACH. Josh. Do well. Keep your morales and do what you do best, fix what’s wrong, be honest and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD keep teaching people. There are too many that do but don’t teach. You have a teachers heart and for an apprentice being able to honestly answer a question and learn without it being a joke is GOLD. I couldn't agree more! I've learned so much from Josh from just watching his AMAZING channel! It really saved me on a few occasions. He, as an SME, and his high quality work are what we consider in the industry's high value assets - in other words, PRICELESS! If I was a influential board member of the company that have the resources, I would give Josh an open budget and the freedom to operate. I am forever GRATEFUL to Josh!!

Look at Rain Man Ray. Got fired for some stupid reason (too honest for the old shop) and now a year and a half ago and now he is flourishing with his NEW shop of his OWN. He is successful and so will you be too just take the plunge!
I was in this exact same situation last year. Although my channel is a fraction of the size of yours, it means a lot to me. My dealership told me I cant do videos any more so I quit and its been the best thing I ever did. I have now built a company with 12 employees, shop, multiple service trucks, large rental fleet and even a transportation division. You will soon realize how much the dealership has held you back from your full potential. All I can say is congratulations!

I was a tech for a major aggregate producer for 16 years, working on mostly cat equipment. A tech position opened up at the dealership that I worked with. So I applied for it. It turned into a mess. Threats of canceling contracts and cat refused to touch me. I quit there, bought a truck and am now an owner operator. Best move I ever made.
I'm often leery of people who film "at work" as I feel like that could immediately end up with a conversation of "Hey a customer complained and ..." So the fact you had that permission for that time was an absolute blessing. It allowed you to grow your channel to where I'm hopeful there's no more permission necessary to do what you want to do. Too many people like to make drama when a lot of times it comes down to "I wanted this and they needed that so I moved on". They had a good mechanic for a while, and you had fulfilling work for a while. Many arrangements don't work that well so why not leave in a respectful manner (like you did). A good CAT mechanic (not a parts changer) is worth their weight in gold. Cat is hands down the best, however they can be picky you will do fine and make a ton of money on your own.
Cats suck get a grip there under powered and maybe at one time that was true but dollar for dollar I would take a Cummins over a cat any day cheaper to repair and easyer to work on even a dd15 is better then a cat engine this isn't the 80s anymore
@Ripsaw17 I think caterpillar is better than cummins. I have drove for the last 6 years, I have seen too many failures like oil pumps locking up, adding coolant every 3 weeks on new trucks
Caterpillars are junk because they're hydraulically electronically controlled injected diesels. H.E.U.i (hydraulic electronic unit injection) They are piles of sh!+
Good for you. I quit my job at state highway department because they told me I had to focus on my job and stop working on old trucks and driving on weekends. On my own time. And it never effected my job so i said bye bye best thing I ever did and I do just fine on my own
how many people can make it on one job? especially if your wife is home raising kids. i had a part time job for many years. it never affected my primary job.

I spent 8 years building my business while I worked a high stress full time job. 2 1/2 years ago, I retired and concentrated on my business full time and I don't regret my decision. Actually, they will have to pay unemployment. Because they changed the terms of employment. They hired him after full disclosure, then told him that they weren't happy with the terms afterwards. That's known as constructive discharge, and makes him eligible for full benefits.
@briansmyla8696 If it wasn't in writing, it didn't happen. Handshake agreements are actually legal agreements here in Texas, and may be there too, but it's near impossible to prove them. It's a losing proposition to attempt it. Always get terms in writing.
I was a mechanic (not a technician) for 35 years before making the big change, and opening my gun store...It's all about you, and what makes you happy and productive...I'll be watching closely as I've always done here...

A couple weeks ago while Jeff Anderson was working on his excavator, he mentioned how an online forum used by Cat mechanics from all over the world was shut down all of a sudden. Mechanics used it to network and help each other out. Tons of good information accumulated over years out the window. Looking forward to the next phase, been watching for many years, learned a lot along the way. Appreciate the extra effort you put into sharing your experience. Cheers

I am a longtime subscriber. I have some CAT equipment. I welcome your return to repair videos as I do all my own work. Now almost every repair (that I haven't done before) starts with a TH-cam video search and view. TH-cam has given me the information and confidence to tackle almost any problem.
Having a trade is a must these days unless you want to constantly get fired right before probationary period is supposed to end. (A lot of places in my area do this.)

When one door closes another opens. You are an analytical guy, that I know just by watching you diagnose a problem. So leaving Western States will be uncomfortable, it may very well be greatest move for you, your channel and your family. Go for it. Anxious to see you doing repairs again.
Josh what I love is your level-headedness and knowledge. I hope it isn't lost to Cat engines - but even more important not lost to the industry. We (the world) need Diesel Mechanics and there are getting fewer of them. Diesel engines aren't going away - Cat CEO in an interview talked decades at a minimum, in fact they are expanding right now the ability to make large engines 3500, C175 and 3600/C280. Your TH-cam channel inspired many and hopefully encourages some that wouldn't have otherwise seen a career as a diesel mechanic to take it up. A trade that is portable (as per other - tool boxes have wheels) is an AWESOME trade. Think also builder/carpenter, electrician, plumber they all offer an easy route to being able to move easily and indeed be paid well, AND if you want to set up your own business. With nearly 250,000 followers you have a BIG channel, and this positive view on getting your hands dirty is needed, so THANKS for prioritising it. Cat getting out of truck engines certainly changed the volume of engines being sold - about 50% of 15L, with about 90% of them being sold in North America. It is now more than 14 years ago and so given that it is now more than the average age of truck in NA the population is certainly getting smaller now. Even with the support the Cat engine operators have give the engine by continuing to keep their Cat powered trucks on the road rather than having newer trucks powered by something else.

I'm an OTR driver based out of Chicago area but would consider driving my truck to wherever you are to have motor work done. (Rear structure seal replacement something you might be interested in doing? [Or maybe a ecm fuel leak-not sure which]) As fans we stand behind you and hope to support you as customers in the future
All you wanna do is look towards the future, the past is the past and you can’t live in it. For 15 years, I managed a large truck shop with over 400 pieces of equipment. I left there in 2008 and thank God I did, I have worked for myself and been much happier, the stress level is much smaller. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I don’t think I believe that. He brought in lots of customers, did tons of advertising for them. Even if he was making more than others, what he was doing made up for that in my opinion. This was probably a decision by their legal department.
This is a greasy decision that feels like the product of greasy bean counters being greasy. Your brand is worth more than their BS and they can frankly stuff it. You're a great mechanic and you can take that anywhere, anytime. We're with you, Joshua. We'll watch whatever you do.

I understand the struggle I dealt with that during Covid and left to a major city fleet department on fire trucks and its hourly plus OT. Ape your information still helps me even though most of our trucks are Cummins but nonetheless it’s educational for a young diesel tech.
You should get a service truck and do your own thing. You are pleanty smart enough to make really good money. I worked for Cat about 10 years been doing my own thing about 4. It would be really hard to go back working for a company again.

In a sense “the man”….wants you to depend on the income that they provide you while working for them…they really don’t want you having that extra TH-cam income while on their clock. Eventually they feel you’ll grow past needing that company’s income
John Force had a master crew chief in Austin Coil for decades & decades & decades and then one day, he came in to their shop, collected all his gear & tools & retired from racing leaving John in the lurch. Sometimes you just get your bellyful & have had enough. !
Sorry to hear about this. But truthfully, CAT hasn't put an engine in a truck in close to 20 years now. So you've been fighting a dwindling supply of customers on the fleet end. That being said, the dealership really stepped on themselves here. I'm looking forward to your next step

If it was all "working"... then it was probably the legal team. Liability. Even if you presented none (so far) then they were playing the "what if" and decided against your efforts, even though they did exploit those efforts at one time. The remote chance that you could inadvertently film something that could be used against them... outweighs your wants/needs/happy place.
The time lost setting up cameras and doing the TH-cam thing while at work is the problem. They want your time while on the job to be 100% focused on CAT work, to be as productive as you can as a mechanic for them. Makes a lot of sense. You can't blame the guys who deal with customers and schedule them in for service and repairs, they need work to get done as soon as practical.
A smart company would have leveraged his content to pull work from all 48 states rather than nit picking the 10 percent of time spent on cameras and lighting.
Considering the amount of time it takes to work in truck engines and other heavy equipment, I'm doubtful the time taken to set up a camera is significant. Not to mention people working need to take a breather and think things through from time to time, fitting perfectly with recording as he did. If he was truly wasting time recording he would've been gone years ago. The truth is, the economy is in the toilet and people are digging up reasons to let people go, specially those who are payed well.
You are correct, if you compared a job I filmed vs. didn't film anything, you couldn't tell any difference on the job labor time wise. It was actually quite insignificant the extra 3-5 minutes of filming per day. Easy for me to make that time up, but it's their company and their call. You would think all the jobs that I brought in to the shop would have more than made up for that, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Did you have your head and block decked and your liner bores machined?
I put new liners and new head with fire rings to help prevent head gasket from blowing again

Never worked on a CAT, worked on a couple of new ISX engines. They have their own issues but what doesn’t ?

@briansmyla8696 If it wasn't in writing, it didn't happen. Handshake agreements are actually legal agreements here in Texas, and may be there too, but it's near impossible to prove them. It's a losing proposition to attempt it. Always get terms in writing.

A couple weeks ago while Jeff Anderson was working on his excavator, he mentioned how an online forum used by Cat mechanics from all over the world was shut down all of a sudden. Mechanics used it to network and help each other out. Tons of good information accumulated over years out the window.

I am a longtime subscriber. I have some CAT equipment. I welcome your return to repair videos as I do all my own work. Now almost every repair (that I haven't done before) starts with a TH-cam video search and view. TH-cam has given me the information and confidence to tackle almost any problem.

Josh what I love is your level-headedness and knowledge. I hope it isn't lost to Cat engines - but even more important not lost to the industry. We (the world) need Diesel Mechanics and there are getting fewer of them.
Diesel engines aren't going away - Cat CEO in an interview talked decades at a minimum, in fact they are expanding right now the ability to make large engines 3500, C175 and 3600/C280.
Your TH-cam channel inspired many and hopefully encourages some that wouldn't have otherwise seen a career as a diesel mechanic to take it up. A trade that is portable (as per other - tool boxes have wheels) is an AWESOME trade. Think also builder/carpenter, electrician, plumber they all offer an easy route to being able to move easily and indeed be paid well, AND if you want to set up your own business.
With nearly 250,000 followers you have a BIG channel, and this positive view on getting your hands dirty is needed, so THANKS for prioritising it.
Cat getting out of truck engines certainly changed the volume of engines being sold - about 50% of 15L, with about 90% of them being sold in North America. It is now more than 14 years ago and so given that it is now more than the average age of truck in NA the population is certainly getting smaller now. Even with the support the Cat engine operators have give the engine by continuing to keep their Cat powered trucks on the road rather than having newer trucks powered by something else.

All you wanna do is look towards the future, the past is the past and you can’t live in it. For 15 years, I managed a large truck shop with over 400 pieces of equipment. I left there in 2008 and thank God I did, I have worked for myself and been much happier, the stress level is much smaller. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I understand the struggle I dealt with that during Covid and left to a major city fleet department on fire trucks and its hourly plus OT. Ape your information still helps me even though most of our trucks are Cummins but nonetheless it’s educational for a young diesel tech.
You should get a service truck and do your own thing. You are pleanty smart enough to make really good money.
I worked for Cat about 10 years been doing my own thing about 4. It would be really hard to go back working for a company again.

shop, collected all his gear & tools & retired from racing leaving John in the lurch.
Sometimes you just get your bellyful & have had enough.

Sorry to hear about this. But truthfully, CAT hasn't put an engine in a truck in close to 20 years now. So you've been fighting a dwindling supply of customers on the fleet end. That being said, the dealership really stepped on themselves here. I'm looking forward to your next step

If it was all "working"... then it was probably the legal team. Liability. Even if you presented none (so far) then they were playing the "what if" and decided against your efforts, even though they did exploit those efforts at one time. The remote chance that you could inadvertently film something that could be used against them... outweighs your wants/needs/happy place.

The time lost setting up cameras and doing the TH-cam thing while at work is the problem. They want your time while on the job to be 100% focused on CAT work, to be as productive as you can as a mechanic for them. Makes a lot of sense. You can't blame the guys who deal with customers and schedule them in for service and repairs, they need work to get done as soon as practical.

A smart company would have leveraged his content to pull work from all 48 states rather than nit picking the 10 percent of time spent on cameras and lighting.
Considering the amount of time it takes to work in truck engines and other heavy equipment, I'm doubtful the time taken to set up a camera is significant. Not to mention people working need to take a breather and think things through from time to time, fitting perfectly with recording as he did.
If he was truly wasting time recording he would've been gone years ago.
The truth is, the economy is in the toilet and people are digging up reasons to let people go, specially those who are payed well.
You are correct, if you compared a job I filmed vs. didn't film anything, you couldn't tell any difference on the job labor time wise. It was actually quite insignificant the extra 3-5 minutes of filming per day. Easy for me to make that time up, but it's their company and their call. You would think all the jobs that I brought in to the shop would have more than made up for that, but that doesn't seem to matter.
