I spent a formidable part of my life as a heavy duty mechanic.
A side bar to this video is, a broken truck is not a deal breaker but a price adjuster. I prefer to buy trucks that require some sort of repairs prior to being usable. I’ve bought my truck with blown bearings in the bull gear. A relatively simple repair. But a lot of guys figure dump the truck.

I agree. I'd rather buy a truck needing an overhaul than one that was just overhauled? Do you think they did a quality job right before they sold it?

One other thing to look for is correct fastener use...are all the bolts holding down the part the same? Most engines don't hold down a part with different kinds/styles of fasteners. Its a red flag for a shoddy repair and that repair ethos probably follows through to other repairs & maintenance.

With my first truck, I bought it from my friend’s nephew. With being inexperienced I went with his word, which, worked out for me. The problems I have had with it was unforeseen, but, that c12 is a workhorse and I love CAT. Fast forward to today. Going to a dealer to look at my next truck and you have been a godsend to me. Going to do this to weed out the ones I am serious about, then, have a diesel mechanic set up to do an inspection on it. Thanks again for making this a little less stressful.

You need to do a video about equipment auction sabotages ,,,I know this is a trick(this is where you're at the auction and all the equipment is idleing people are checking them ou)this trick is from an old horse trader this is for older diesel equipment ,,,auctions every diesel engine at idle between the 200 300 RPM range (harmonic resonance)) you could find a point where you're idling it for that motor just knocks like hell once a idle Pointe was found he would set that equipment at that point if he wanted to buy it,,,, and other machines if didn't want to buy it he could find an idle Point with that motor sounded like a sewing machine,,,,,,, then every time somebody played with the idle on his prospective new machine he'd run back there and set that Idol making it knocked like hell,,,,, so when you're buying a quipment at all actions there's so many different ways people sabotage equipment I machine could have been idling for hours fine ,, so when time the auctioneer comes around they can't get it started ,,,, then after it's been sold The Saboteur un sabotage & it starts it up and drives his new machine to his stable,,,,,,, do a video on all the s*** people can do at all actions and how to spot it,,,,,, I'm an old diesel dog from lay back but I enjoyed your video and learned a few things new,,,, when you quit learning in life that means your dead lol

      Saw it done many times.
Older districts almost always had an emergency air flap mounted above the super charger. It was activated with either a cable or electric solenoid. You could trip it by hand and make it look like it wasn't done. No air getting in to burn the fuel.
Cummins might have a emergency fuel stop. Activated the same was. I have seen somebody turn the fuel off or almost off, then loosen the nut on arm and reset it look open.
Put tape on the terminal and on of the fuel solenoid so it doesn't open.

Good vid.. One thing I find is really good to listen to is the exhaust and the intake, listen for any cylinder that doesn't fire the same as the others, a rhythmic "ump" in the exhaust, or listening on the intake side maybe a rhythmic hiss of a leaking intake valve

I bought a tractor, bloke said it didn't smoke, when i got it home i knew what i was in for as it had been sitting for 10 years in a paddock, well did it smoke? it blew more smoke than a steam train, the fix for blow by was put a piece of rag on the dipstick, the oil filter had never been changed in its life, i didn't need to change the oil as it used it like fuel, when it finally let go i found out the farmer used an angle grinder to clean up the weld on the cracked block between the cylinder bore, i had to get another block and i rebuilt the engine, also i had to take the radiator apart as it was blocked solid by dirt, now runs perfect.

Josh I really dig your vids. I really do. BUT> Lets be honest. DPF is a bad joke on the working Man. This is the reason why I will not allow my Sons to buy a Kenworth with a accert engine. First reason 18:1.... You have to be kidding me? 18:1 plus twin turbos that spool up at 50 psi with lift a head. Second reason CO2 is plant food. How does all of these hippies think the oil got in the ground to begin with? Look I could go on and on.... I think your a very smart wrench. Keep up the good work.

There's only two reasons to get a used engine.
One is to get that famous torque from 1100 to 1400 RPM that's only available on yellow engines. In which case, everything you mentioned applies.
The other reason for a used engine... Revenge!
A twin turbo 8v92 with straight pipes, mated to a 5 and a 4, is perfect for running passed the neighbor's house at 4 in the morning, after having been kept up all night by one of their famous Saturday night parties.
In that case, who cares about how bad the engine is as long as it runs, and is extremely loud, and will rev to 2400 RPM.
Just make sure to bump the governor before shifting. The neighbors have earned it.

First thing I look for is where the air enters the cylinder at. If it enters at the top, I shy away. If it enters through a ring of ports just above bottom dead center and has to be pushed there by a roots blower, I'm in.

The older trucks will smoke upon startup. Old 70s and 80s will smoke blue or grey for a while if cold. I own a old 400 Cummins and it will smoke for 20 to 30 minutes or until it's warm and that's just how it is. I rebuilt mine around 40,000 miles ago and it will smoke when cold until it gets to 160° still and everything is new. Nature of the beast with these old engines especially when timing has been retarded or low compression pistons are installed like mine.

Yep same with older tractors. Later 20 and the 30 and 40 series John Deere’s are notorious for blue smoke at idle when the engine isn’t at operating temp. they will fog out a shed in no time . Nothing wrong with them thats the way they are .

There are a few more rules when dealing with a used DPF engine:
The failed DPF will damage the rest of the engine, so if you find a problem in a DPF engine be alert. The rise in backpressure destroys the turbocharger. In other cases, the turbocharger fails and the leaking oil ruins the DPF. If the engine does not use an injector in the exhaust system, it will inject extra fuel to get the DPF into active regen mode. If that happens too often, it wears out the piston rings and bores due to excessive unburnt fuel in the cylinder. Other times, the piston rings reach the end of their life, lead to excess oil consumption, and then clog up the DPF. I don't know how to separate all the different issues to solve the problem. Maybe you need a DPF, maybe you need to rebuild the whole engine and then replace the DPF. It really sucks that doing a compression test is either impossible or extremely time consuming on most modern diesels.
7:20 Diesel engines in many cars and pickup trucks always routed the blow by into the intake manifold or turbocharger. On the old ones, you could easily see where a hose was routed to the intake, then you could remove the hose and observe.
8:15 The other flaw in coolant test strips is that they don't tell you what type of additive package the coolant uses. Many years ago, Honda dyed their coolant green, and people would use the silicate based green antifreeze that was made for American cars. The result was water pumps failing too soon. There are other problems with the wrong coolant, but the example I used happened in my family. Gasoline or diesel, you must have the correct type of coolant and if applicable, coolant additives.
Do any of you guys watch the "Powerstrokehelp" channel? People who own or work on diesel engines should also watch that channel even if they don't have a Ford or Navistar.
9:20 Excessive DPF active regen leads to excess fuel in oil if the engine doesn't use a fuel injector in the exhaust system. That is one thing that should be mentioned when you mention checking for excess fuel in the oil. It is extremely important.

I've read some horror stories about some of the really old Diesel engines from the '80s before electronic fuel injection was even thought of. In those cases engine manufacturing date is absolute key, as the manufacturer will try to revise issues as new engine developments come about, such as hydraulic roller lifters, single piece rear main seals, and serpentine belt drives that greatly improve engine reliability and reduce undue stress and load on the engine. This is the case with some older Chevy half ton Diesel trucks with Detroits in them, as engine developments for small block V8s were also being shared with the Detroit Diesel counterparts. Still doesn't mean that the crank has absolutely no problem with eating itself alive and destroying main casting webs in the process, turning essentially what sounds like a brand new engine into a heaping pile of metal on the highway. Diesels are subject to a lot more vibration and knocking than a gas engine even when not under load, so adding more revisions to eliminate vibration will lengthen the engine's lifespan. If you see a bulging or torn harmonic balancer, or a v belt setup, avoid at all costs. buying the most updated block of the same type to rebuild and drop in is gonna be more cost effective, install a hydraulic harmonic balancer, replace the main bearings, rebuild the injection pump, girdle the main block webs, and use a dual electric fan with an oversized aluminum radiator, so the clutch fan isn't robbing the engine of power, and you'll have a pretty good reliable engine that should see around the same mileage as a tractor trailer.

I've got a CAT C11. It starts and idles strong. It could idle all day and no blow any smoke. When we get into higher RPM's after about 20 minutes it starts to blow white smoke and it sputters a little. I've drained the tank, changed the filters, tried the water treatments. I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. As soon as we lower the RPM's and get back to and idle it clears up again almost instantly. What would you think? I'm not losing coolant.

We just ended up rebuilding 3 engines. All 3406E. They all had around about 1.5 million miles. All water issues. Either sucking it in or blowing it out. Is that about right for lifespan of a good cat motor? The one motor with big horsepower numbers( turbo, injectors and a hot cam) was blowing it out but the others it was pulling it into the oil pan.

Do you recommend a Cat, Cummins or Mercedes diesel engine? Which one is most cost-effective to repair? I'm looking to buy a 2007 or newer school bus and personally like the CAT C7 sounds.

Just note that if it has a C7S in it, swap that for an older C7 or even a new C7.1 industrial engine. Otherwise, delete the emissions itrms. C7S's are notoriously unreliable when it comes to the emissions systems.

Cruise control works for a minute sometimes.. then it cuts off. Sometimes it works for days on end without cutting out. Very strange. Replaced Speedo sensor on tail shaft. Still cuts out

    I own a 2006 F350 with a 6.0 powestroke
I love the truck and I had no real problems other than some codes that Come on and I mostly ignore as it the past the codes won’t stop.
I do need a mechanic to do real diagnostics and a real service. Any idea how to find a good Diesel mechanic in Jacksonville Florida?

I have the same problem if i didnt know better they never took engine out. All bolt on components are the same from old engine bolted to new

I have heard that there are numerous military surplus 6.2 and 6.5 engines from their HMMVs. Those engines have 24V glow plug systems, but you can swap those out for 12V systems.

By Some chance " Ape " And believe me I mean that in a Very Positive way, Do you Teach Diesel Engine Maintenance in a School for Diesel Mechanics or you have at some time. I could only think that if you have not Your doing Better with You Tube than you would in a School teaching new Diesel Trainees the Breathing Life of A Diesel Engine. Now I am Not a Teacher on Diesels or Gas Engines but I have and I am Semi Self tough Gas Engine Mechanic, and have worked on Radial Aircraft Engines and Gas Generators. I know the Principal and the Difference in Gas And Diesel Engines But I would not know where to Start On a Diesel Engine, If Your Not A Teacher Somewhere on Diesel Engines you Should Be. You are the Best I have ever Listened to When Explaining the Ins and Outs of a Diesel Engine, All i can Say is I have Told Many People About you and I do Know several of them are Subscribers of Yours and they all think you are Great. I am going to Buy a Diesel RV Here soon and I have Been Getting a lot Of Great Information from You and I thank you very Much. If Your Not a Teacher of Diesel Mechanics you should Be, What more can I say, Except If There is anyone out there that wants to Be A Diesel Mechanic Subscribe to this Channel " Adept Ape " this Man knows what he Is Talking about. Thanks Again. God Bless America its Disabled Veterans and Its American Patriots.

I have a 2005 w9 with a 550 acert ..my fan will stay on all the time if I don't unplug the AC compressor.. I brought it too 3 me shops and there best guess was to run a switch to manually engage the fan when it hits around 200 ..any suggestions on what it may be ..so far changed the fan hub/clutch and condenser..ended up running a switch so idk from here ..don't have the money right now to change the compressor..think it may be that?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello Aaron, your engine ECM controls your cooling fan and it must be getting an AC on signal from somewhere. Try unplugging your AC pressure switches and see if it kicks off, if it does, then you probably have a bad AC switch. If it still stays on then you may want to get the ECM programmed to not turn the cooling fan on with an AC signal or you can go through the time consuming process of trying to find out where the AC signal is coming from.
