How do you turn on accessibility keyboard without logging in? The video is about how to login in when the keyboard doesn't work. So the method shown here is totally useless. Is the Mac not able to show keyboard at the login screen?
Right, you have to set this up beforehand. If you are stuck in a situation where your keyboard isn't working unexpectedly, then what you do depends on the situation. Is it just that your wireless keyboard's battery is dead? Plug it into your Mac then and you can use it as a wired keyboard while it charges.

This is great info, but I'm still having trouble. Some keys are not working on my mid 2015 Macbook. I got the Accessibility keyboard to show up but when I type nothing shows up in the log in. Same with plugging an external keyboard. Any advice?
Whoops I realized I had not clicked back into the log in field. Now that the Accessibility keyboard worked. Whew! On my macbook, first the T went, then the P then the O and now all the keys on that row are not working. The external magic keyboard still does not work, however. Sad.
Interesting tip, thanks! I noticed that the accessibility keyboard shows up during the login phase, but won't show up if you lock the session and have to re-input the password to unlock. Any way to enable on the lock screen as well?
100%. You got it. Helpful video! Also, I discovered while trying to set up an iMac for the first time that you can turn on that virtual keyboard on screen if the iMac won't yet acknowledge your wireless keyboard. With a USB mouse, you can click on each letter/number in the virtual keyboard and get through the setup and then update bluetooth settings to see your wireless keyboard and trackpad. So you don't have to run out and buy another keyboard! This feature is in the Accessibility settings very early in the setup menu. Click on "MOTOR" and a keyboard will open on screen, so if you at least have a USB mouse, you can get through setup.
Dude, you just saved me a lot of hassle. Thank you so much. Something as simple as not knowing my Mac Bluetooth keyboard can be connected by the lightning cable.
I had a question for the accessibility keyboard to work. I realized the keyboard only works if I have already logged into the mac once. If my mac had restarted or turned off and then back on the keyboard feature is not there. Also the screen mirroring featuring I had enabled but it didn't work from restart. I think these 2 options work if the user logged in once and then now is in lock screen. Am I correct about this?
Possibly. Experiment and see. That's all I would do, but I don't have that problem with my keyboard so I can't run that experiment.

Hi Gary. Quick question for you. On my I Phone 8, how do you delete You Tube videos that are on your phone? Example, beside my You Tube Icon is the number 4,132. I assume they are videos. I feel they is just taking up valuable space on my phone.
TH-cam videos aren't stored on your iPhone. They stream from TH-cam when you watch them. I think you are looking at the "badge" notification number. That tells you how many notifications you have in an app. If you want to see how much space an app is using, go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage, find the app in the list, tap it, and it shows you the App Size and the Documents & Data (storage) it is using. Any you see for TH-cam would just be cached data that will clear itself out.

Not necessarily. In some cases you just connect the keyboard with the cable (or use another one) in order to access Bluetooth settings to re-establish a connection. In other cases you may just need to connect with a cable to use the keyboard while it recharges.
Do you really think someone would not figure out that he can connect the usb cable if he had one? :) I believe it's pretty clear even for a child. No need to even explain it. I don't think the computer was damaged as it starts up, I think the wireless/Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are not connecting to new WiFi. So I can't get to menus at all. Mysteriously the printer came back to life and recognized new WiFi.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
You said a wired keyboard didn't work either? Could be a serious problem then. Take it to the Genius Bar and have them look at it.
Thank you infinitely. Problem solved through activating the visual keyboard. Only some letters where not working, so. I was able to avtivate it and type in my password. Thanks once again. God bless.
How you activate visual keyboard?
Good to know this. This was the most terrible part of buying a new Mac mini. I have Bluetooth keyboards so I was scrounging for usb keyboard.
I have to buy a USB keyboard today as a “column” of keys are dying, but that accessibility keyboard seems to be configurable to popup so you can login that way. Must investigate
Omg bro thank you very much, I thought I was gonna get in trouble for not being able to log into my Mac
I had this happen on my new M1 iMac - I had to hard reboot by pressing button on the back. I had tried plugging in my keyboard but that didn't do the trick either. The accessibility keyboard trick bis a good one.
The accessibility keyboard option totally worked since only my q through p row wouldn't work. Thanks!
I struggled for a hr logging in, But now I’m in thanks to you. Blessings brother!!!
How can i enter if i can’t log in at all??? Please 😢 as in my keyboard doesn’t work i am trying with my ipad’s keyboard and it doesn’t work even if plugged in
You'll need to get another one then. Borrow any USB keyboard or pick one up.
Hey thanks for the great content. I am looking for a solution for not being able to type my password into my MacBook Pro when in clamshell mode. I use it as a desktop and turn on my power strip, hear my MacBook start and the login shows up but it will not connect to my Logitech bluetooth keyboard to allow me to type the password? Any help is very much appreciated.
Sounds like an issue with the Logitech keyboard not connecting at that point. I'd contact their support about it.
Hello. there I have problem rename my key board ,would you help to rename key board on mac os catalina thank
Rename the keyboard? What do you mean by that?
My Bluetooth on my iMac got turned off and when I plug it in it’s not useable when plugged in this iMac is fairly new so what do I do
Not sure why your keyboard isn't working when plugged directly into your Mac. Is the switch on? If it is an Apple keyboard I'd call Apple Support and work with them directly on this.
Thanks. Finally found a simple solution that worked.
Thanks, I ran into that when I updated to OS 11.5.? and the USBs on the mother board quit working with the keyboard so I switched to PCIe USB and success. Anyway I now have the accessibility keyboard active. Good tip.
Issue I have is a user spilt fluid. Keyboard and mouse don't work, so I used an external keyboard and mouse last week to retrieve data - worked fine. Today I wanted to grab another file from the Mac, but now it just sits at the log on screen with Unlock to Use Accessories, obviously I can't get into the Mac as I am using external mouse/keyboard. It worked last week! I can't unlock as now the Mac has decided I need to unlock the accessories - thanks Apple!
Thank you so much for the sharing. My mac dose not allow me use external keyboard before login. But the keyboard is broken which prevent me from entering the password. You inspired me to use accessibility keyboard. For my m1, i get this option by quickly clicking the power button three times! Appreciate it!
Can any one tell me the which keyboard he is using in this video 2:03
This video is from 2 year ago so it is before the current Touch ID keyboards. It would be this one: www.apple.com/shop/product/MK2A3LL/A/magic-keyboard-us-english
Is there a way to pair a keyboard at the login screen.
How do you get rid of the caps lock? I can’t sign into my computer because of the caps and the light isn’t even on.
So you aren't logged in, and you can't type your password because Caps Lock is on? Then press Caps Lock to turn it off.
@@macmost caps is broken. When I pressed numbers those signs would pop up. I turned off even rebooted my iMac to original but nothing worked. I need a new keyboard.
@@zvornicanka39 If you get symbols instead of numbers for the number row, then it isn't the Caps Lock key. It would probably be a Shift key that is stuck down.
@@macmost it’s caps lock I took it to the Apple Store. I have to get a new keyboard.
Unfortunately, my computer doesn't have the Accessibility Options button in the Login Options screen. Is there any other way to do this?
Just get a wired keyboard and keep it handy.
At 2:33 how come you can go to system preferences??
I'm showing you a technique there that would require you setting things up in advance when you ARE logged in.
Thank you thank you thank you! Took your advice and used my charging cord as a USB connector to the computer, problem solved! Saved me lots of time and money 😅 and met my work deadlines! Thank you !!!
Accessibility keyboard isn't there. How do I find it?
@@macmost Thanks Gary. Your info helped me to clean up a lot of hogging apps. I appreciate you and how quickly you respond. Love all of your videos.
Thanks for the info! I can help someone else if they accidentally turned off the Bluetooth like I did. Haha
I love you, cmd option f5 is working ❤
lifesaver thank you. used wireless keyboard with usb cable
Thanks Gary :)
Didn't expected the keyboard to work by simply connecting it with a cable :D
Thankyou, saved my sanity today! Now to figure out how to turn off the keyboard use as a mouse option, that got me into this predicament!
It doesn’t work for me. My mack book says it need to be unlocked to use the accessory. Any other way to unlock it?
What "accessory?" Have you tried another keyboard? If you have an Apple keyboard, have you tried connecting it with the cable?
Thanks a lot, I just connected keyboard with iMac and it did work
Bonjour. I have a huge problem. I’ve tried ukulele to remap my keyboard but it wasn’t working so when to my usual keyboard. I had one file in my system’s library created by ukulele (I’ve tried your methods to delete it - impossible).
After few minutes my Mac was in standby and when I typed my password to access computer, it’s not working ( letter t is dead key).
I’ve tried to reboot, to acess Terminal via Disk Utility ( com + R is not working). There’s nothing I can do. My MacBook is dead forever. I only have an old iBook G4 and I can’t buy usb keyboard. My MacBook is mid 2010 and I already spent more than 100$ to improve it ( speakers, ram, ssd ).
I wonder how many people lose their Mac because of Ukulele...
Try to seek help with their support or maybe support forums specific to that app.
@@macmost that’s an old mid 2010 MacBook. But I will try your solution with an ordinary separated keyboard. Or trying an app that do the job, or trying something with my IBook G4. Merci !
I have access to command + s but it’s useless coz t or m or - or _ and few more keys are dead.
Thanks worked!! Plugged in Apple keyboard to computer it worked. Thanks!!
Did not work with my iMac . Tried to log in with Logitech keys to go and did not connect even with cable. Obviously only works with Magic Keyboard . But my keyboard was damaged, so I tried with my second keyboard. Don’t understand why it would not connect even with cable …
You just saved me!!! I had a usb keyboard laying around and all I had to do was plug it into the Mac (: 🎉
Plot twist: if your keyboard doesn’t work, you have to get another one.
My keyboard has no usb connector. No other keyboards available. I'm not sure who need an explanation of how to connect the usb cable.
@@alexanders860 don’t assume that everyone understands everything at the same level of detail. Plenty of people assume that the cord is just for charging.
Thanks Gary!! BTW where does the Intro music come from?
Do you mean the little "stinger" at the beginning? That's just something made in GarageBand a long time ago.
@@macmost Yes...I think its cool!
I have restarted several times, the lightning connector is connected, and I still can't type.
Have you been able to try another keyboard? Perhaps this one is broken.
I just did a software update and now my wired Mac keyboard isn’t recognized. I’ve unplugged and plugged back in. Nothing. Tried getting a Mac Bluetooth keyboard to pair. Nothing. What do I do now? I can’t login
The Logi MX Keys has a usb-c connector but just for loading the battery. I plugged it in because it doesn’t wor for whatever reason and still cant type shit.
Wow thank you so much! The only video on TH-cam that actually helped me. Definitely subscribing
Virtual keyboard never showed on my MacMini 😠 I'm using a Logitech K380 keyboard which disconnects randomly. The only way to login is to long press power button on Mac to switch it off and start it again.
Check to make sure you have it set right and then test it. It should appear whether the keyboard is connected or not.
@@macmost Checked a lot of times. Everything is done but no luck.
@@Kermexx You'll need to get some firsthand help then. Try Apple Support or the Genius Bar.
@@macmost Thanks! Genius is not available here in Romania. I'll try Apple Support.
on my mac on(users&groups)There is no (Accessibility Options) on this page!!!
Perhaps you are using an older version of macOS?
My keyboard got damaged by water and I can't use any USB keyboards because my macbook is asking me to 'unlock to use accessories'. I'm basically stuck at the login screen now :( Any novel solutions?
What worked for me is accessing the machine with the broken keyboard through VNC. Again, something you need to set up in advance...
I've had it where the mouse didn't work but the keyboard did. Is there a quick fix for this please?
You can then use Mouse Keys ( support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/control-the-pointer-using-mouse-keys-mh27469/mac ) to control the cursor until you connect the mouse.
@@macmost Thanks Gary I didn''t know about this. The link doesn't work so I googled it.
@@stephenrowland3775 Sorry, it looks like TH-cam comments took the ) at the end as part of the link.
@@macmost Lol sorted thanks )
What about the Power Key ?!!! when the keyboard is dead the power key not work too so how turn on the laptop !!!?
So you have a MacBook and the keyboard isn't working on it? Even the power key? (Assuming your model has one). You've got to take it to the Genius Bar to have them look at that.
Thank you so much! I was in a panic! You helped me without spending any money!
🙏🏻a million!!!!!! - didn’t think of that USB charging cable🤔
Maybe Apple also has to add the Bluetooth menu to the login screen to be able to connect the keyboard.
Crying happy tears. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, my new IMac keyboard is not working and I didn’t even think about finding my adapter and plugging it into monitor. Then I have to figure why the blue tooth isn’t working.
i pluged in my dell wired key board but not reconizing it
what do i if my keyboard doesn’t work, no on screen computer, usb cable doesn’t work n im stuck at the login screen????
Did you try a second keyboard?
You are amazing, Gary!
