I remember watching this when it was first broadcast. I was really excited and like 22 years old.

".. the whole idea of these promos is to be as stupid & disgusting as possible, so we might as well go for it..." LMFAO
    That's my man, yeah!

Why do people feel the need to stretch out the image to make it widescreen? This is from TV in 1981! That's not how it looked! So aggravating.

The drummer: David Crigger. He was auditioning that day. Was offered the gig and turned it down. Having the 2 on the Town film crew there was an unexpected bit of pressure. Crigger played with Don Ellis and Passport, among many others. He's an LA guy. Unless some Other drummer was there for some OTHER 2 on the Town bit ;-)

Thats what written music is, in an ensemble.
Its more like the synclavier is like a band in a keyboard.
    Its quite exciting.
I mean my god , going from orchestral music to 'You are What You is'.
He inspired so many to be who they are through creative expression.
    It belongs to the individual.
    I owe alot to FZ.

Here's some proof that FZ was capable of making his guitar sound like something else altogether. When the solo cut in at 0:47 I thought FZ' guitar sounded like a saxophone. And I can safely say that FZ was to rock guitar what Coltrane was to jazz sax.

Hey Blackpage, This is probably before Wackerman came in. Thunes auditioned in the summer of '81.
During the three day audition Frank told Scott "You're good enough to record" and had him cut some studio tracks..This info is from Tom Wictor's book Interviews with really scary musicians, half the book being about Thunes time with Zappa. Be cool and have a good evening

David could tell you better... I believe he was doing an audition of some sort that day, and they happened to be shooting that promo clip. I think he got offered and ultimately turned down the gig; but, again, he'd be better able to talk about what's happening here.

@@robshrock-shirakbari1862 - Quick response by you. Thanks. I'm simply a searcher for the truth. Every time I believe I know everything Zappa, something surprises me.
      - Did you know Zappa was a Black Sabbath fan? And he was invited to play on-stage by Sabbath? Evidently, techno-problems didn't permit.

@@JamminClemmons Not surprised in the least...
BTW, another really good friend of mine plays drums with Dweezil, Ryan Brown. And I've done sessions with Vinnie... a weirdly beautiful world out there. Both David and Ryan have been groomsman at my weddings. Two different weddings, though. LOL
EDIT: No, actually, it was the same wedding. I got confused... been married 3 times. haha

@@robshrock-shirakbari1862 - Haha. Well, hell brother. Third time's a charm they say.
I'm subbing your channel. - I own a 1977, natural wood finish Guild S300A-D that sat in my parents closet for 20 years. i was in the US Navy for that time-frame. I wanted to get rid of it because I lost all my guitar chops until my musician friends convinced me to hang on to it. I'm glad i did. *Guild's* aren't made like they were back then. mine's American made and my trusted friends informed me they're either made in Japan or Mexico now (I forgot what country). I have it howling thru a tube driven, 4-speaker Fender amplifier.
      - Damn, I'm almost jealous! You've rubbed elbows with Vinnie???? How cool is that! He's up there with Bill Bruford, Greg Bissonette, Chad Wackerman, Terry Bozzio and Buddy Rich. - *And I'm only serious.*
Cheers, from western NY (the birthplace of Billy Sheehan).

You couldn't go out if you didn't have on Brylcreem and Old Spice, you just won't fit in. That must have been the cheaper products.

You Are what You Is is a brilliant album.
Scenes of him playing with the band in the studio = amazing.
    But
Orchestral stuff is not good...pretentious and empty sounding.
And that video for You Are What You Is must be one of the worst things I’ve ever seen.
Finally for someone who was so wise to pretentions and affectations in other people; and who was so seemingly aware of the sheep-like tendencies of people through cultural trends and social conditioning...it’s ironic that his life was cut so short by cigarettes, surely one of the most stupid and pointless cultural affectations of recent centuries. If only he had applied his disdain for other people’s pathetic habits (‘smoke your little smoke, drink your little drink’) to his own self, he might still be alive now, and we might all have been able to hear untold more quantities of his beautiful music. These are some of my thoughts on Frank Zappa.

Frank was what he was and didn’t apologize for it. If there are certain things you like about him; good, enjoy them. If there are things you don’t like about him; good, avoid them.
