Even if the cats involved in these memes are happy, the problem is magnified when others see it and try to recreate with their own pets/get pets because of the memes, not knowing enough about them to know if they're stressed/upset. One of my cats is a rescue who was called Grumpy by her first owner. She's a flat faced/squashed nose mix (Google brachycephalic breeds if that doesn't mean anything to you) with an underbite (her lower jaw is longer than her upper one) and they clearly got her because of Grumpy cat. When her health issues became evident* and expensive (£2-4k for a nose and soft palate surgery) she "got out" and went missing. But when I found her and took her to the local animal charity to get her back to them, they ghosted us. She's been mine ever since. *like pugs and other dogs bred to have tiny noses, most cats with the same also get problems with breathing, so adopt, don't but from breeders it's just financing a cruel business.. Sorry for the sermon 😇
What matters is whether the cat was in distress or not. As someone with years of experience personally dealing with cats, I can tell you that cat was chill af. It wasn't struggling, its eyes weren't wide, its head movements were relaxed, and it was slowly blinking. Trust me, I know it's concerning to look at sometimes, but some cats really do not give a shit about being handled extensively. It depends on how they were treated as kittens, as well as their individual personalities, so broadly saying something like that is cruel would be disingenuous when it's visibly clear that this cat is not stressed out by being handled this way. The problem is when you see videos of cats that *are* in distress but the people are just finding it funny. It's really not difficult to spot a cat that's in distress, because they are seldom shy about making it known.
