When I studied abroad in China, there was this person that just absolutely annoyed me, because whenever he talked to Chinese people, he would do a crappy Chinese accent and using bad grammar.... When I asked why the hell he was doing that, he just said, "It helps them understand me better..." and I was like, "No, you look like a massive racist.... You're from Kansas--talk like it!" LOL!
It does help though, as they hear it said as they would. Sounds super racist, but it is just a means of making conversation easier if one of the people speaks very little English. I had a conversation with Spanish speakers about movies and translated titles, they couldn't think of the English title for Limite Vertical, which is Vertical Limit. Not everything is obvious if you don't understand the language well.
I’ll partly second that with a word of caution. Firstly, talking an accent wouldn’t help because now the words/sounds are muddled. But simplifying sentences to core elements does make it easier to understand. (“Go shopping?” Is easier to understand than “Did you go grocery shopping today?”) However, in tourist-y areas and in many business areas, people are taught English and likely understand it so they may get a tad more annoyed if you try to dumb it down. I’d say try speaking in “normal” English first then if they seem to not fully understand you, then try simplifying the sentence.
@@Yvolve His version wasn't super helpful... It was more like, "Oooooh, you rikeyyyyy? You rikey rong tiiiiime?" when he shares food with them. As in, literally mimicking stereotypes with a crappy accent and bad grammar.... The Chinese people were speaking better English than he was.... LOL!
