i actually needed the forward assist once! it was one of the first times i'd ever used the platform, and i didn't know you couldn't ride the bolt. i was used to other platforms where you can ride the bolt, and i wanted to see how the round chambers in slow motions. so, to my friends horror, i very slowly let the bolt strip a round and almost chamber it. come to find out this is one of the best ways to not only jam an AR15, but it jams it in such a way that basically only the forward assist will work. without it, you could need to strip the gun down or knock the round out with a cleaning rod.
basically, when you ride the bolt like that, you get the round stuck in a position where the extractor can't grab it to pull it back out, and you can't slingshot the bolt hard enough to full seat it. you really do need the forward assist, and i had to slam on it quite hard to get the extractor to grab the round so i could get it back out. that said, i still think the charging handle not being able to apply forward force to the bolt is a dumb design choice.

Thats is a great point. before the forward assist was put on the firearm. The bolt part that is scalloped to open the dust cover. That scallop was designed to be a way to force the bolt forward with your thumb. Works ok with grippy gloves. But truthfully i have never needed to use the forward assist. But i am glade its there. Thanks for sharing your story

What about a gas piston shutoff? Would that make it into a sort of bolt-action rifle, thus decreasing mechanical recoil and increasing muzzle speed?

Weren't they the same people that thought Humvees with TOW missile launchers were average ordinary American pickup trucks (meaning all Americans drove around in these things). No wait. It was the Sunnis who made that one up.

Never heard of that. When the Army took away my M14 I got a M-16. Not M-16A1 and it didn’t have a forward assist. A failure to fully return to in battery required the action to be cycled thus throwing away the round. If there was fouling it might require an arms room to clear and get functional again. REALLY bad news in a combat zone. Thus the forward assist came along fairly quickly. I never liked the platform or caliber as mine failed when it had to work. My 1911 worked and I lived. I own 1911s. I do not own an AR platform to this day.
