My No Build Car Camping Setup and why I have made the choices I have

  • I drive a 2018 Subaru Outback that I live in part time. I have three simple rules when it comes to how I arrange my car camping setup. 1. I have to be able to access my spare tire without tools.
    2. I need to be able to convert my car back into a passenger car without tools. 3. I need to make it look like I am not living in my car by concealing what’s inside with ease. So what is my no build car camping set up? Let’s get into it one zone at a time.

    I am some one who spends countless hours watching videos and dreaming about upgrades to my subaru so I can finally take it out on an adventure. I think you just convinced me to throw a backpack full of camping gear, pad, sleeping bag, and 5 gallon water jug, and hit the road for a test run.

      hell yeah!!!! This is the best thing I've heard all day. Have an amazing adventure. I just spent six days in the palm springs area. It's an amazing feeling being able to go where ever you want because you have everything you need with you.

      You don't even need this much! A sleeping bag, a water bottle and a fire steel/lighter and you're good to go, really. That's all you need, then you'll discover along the way what you desire on top of that.

    Finally a car camping / conversion video that realises the necessity of the spare tyre and accessing it. Watched one the other day and the guy actually threw it away? Madness. anyway, your set up looks great, tidy, functional. Go get it gurl! xx Love from New Zealand.

    Finally, an SUV video where somebody has a similar vehicle to mine (structurally)! It really helped to give me a better idea of things that I can do. Right now it’s somewhat more disorganized, but I love your ideas about little containers in the console, as well as totes to level out the bed. I’m changing my sleeping arrangement and kept thinking about getting one single thing to level out the bed, funny how one can get fixated on an idea lol Several items (like totes) makes way more sense.

    Great video. Thank you for the detailed breakdown, and your 3 rules were basically what I was focusing on as well. I did a 4 day car camping trip with everything I owned this past summer and loved it, but I was extremely cramped and barely made things work. I will definitely use some ideas from your video, especially your sleeping setup, it looks really comfy and that is important to me as well if I plan on doing this long term.

    Having been homeless I was initially in a Subaru Outback and did the same thing... need to look like I'm not living in there. I parked nearby the office I worked so another reason I needed to live small. I then moved into a Prius V for the AC since I was living in L.A. during a heat wave.

      The only thing I don't like is the head room when in the back. I can't sit up. If I could change one thing it would be that. I would also add a moon roof for stealth ventilation. Other than that the outback is the best car camping car I have ever owned. I have often thought about living full time in my Subaru. The simplicity of it all is very attractive to me.

    I just recently semi retired and i still get a lot of vacation and paid holidays from work. I work Friday nights and Sundays. I bought me a new outback a couple years ago. In the last 4 months I have bought me a tent that goes over the back hatch of it and opens up into a 8 x 8 tent area. I have picked up almost every thing to going on camping trips this year. I live in Ohio and I plan on going to Colorado and Vermont on one or two week trips. Plus I will be doing two or three day camping trips more local. I love camping. I also bought me a car carrier the goes in the hutch of my suv to carry flammable things and to haul firewood. I am excited about going this year do to me being in my earth 60’s and want to travel some before my age gets me to the point to where I can’t. Just wish I had someone to go with as that would make it more pleasurable setting next to fire pit and/ lake.

    I'm super interested in your progress. I, too, own a 2018 Subaru Outback. I already feel like I practically live in it as an outpatient hospice nurse. I'd eventually like to do some travel nursing as an OP hospice nurse. A van is a wonderful idea for a travel nurse, but not quite practical as an outpatient nurse who needs to travel all over to see patients, especially with current gas prices. This could be a solution. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

    I watched with great interest, as I got a 2022 Outback last year for the purpose of bopping around to trailheads and sleeping in my car before hikes or backpacking sections. My question is, how do you carry out your rule #3? You showed us all the stuff you have in the different zones and I would be very interested in seeing what you put in the concealed cargo area in back and how it looks to somebody looking inside the car at a trailhead. Are you able to get everything that would be attractive to a thief into the concealed area? Even the trash bag. Although you use it for trash, a thief might think there's something valuable inside. Thanks!

    • @jetsethome
      @jetsethome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you so much for your question. I love this little community we are building. Yes I can hide everything. What you see at minute 2.00 is my car setup broken down completely. My trash can is black so after emptying it I can lay it down on the floor in the back and no one can see it. It also compresses down flat when empty and can be shoved into a tight space. If I am going to be gone over night I also put up my window coverings in the back of the car for extra stealth mode. The trick I think is to get as much black stuff as you can so when someone is looking through your tinted windows they can't see it. I'm looking into buying a roof storage thing but they seem really flimsy. I need to do some more research.

    Great video. I have the same rules you do! Questions: does the lower strap of the back seat organizer tuck in fully or does it run across your lower back? Was that a space blanket you used for the moisture barrier? What device is stuck to your dashboard to hold your phone? Can it be removed w/o damaging your dashboard? Did the drain valve of your igloo BMX leak?( sorry, lots of questions)

    • @jetsethome
      @jetsethome  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem, I love questions.
      1. the strap runs across my back. If I was to do it again I wouldn't get that seat organizer. Not because I don't like it but I just don't really use it as much as I thought I would.
      2. I got the emergency blanket from a small town camping supply store in Co but I found one like it on amazon. Or at least it looks like it.

      3. The thing holding my phone is something I picked up at a truck stop in Nv. I have no idea what brand it is and when I removed it it did not damage my dashboard.
      4. YES!!! the drain leaked. It was a disaster. I have only wished I had a cooler once after that so I don't use one anymore. It's not worth the space or hassle for me at this point.
