Learned last night that you need to let go of the craft to be considered EVA for science. Don't be scared, nothing bad will happen if you let go of the craft....

.... As long as you enable RCS Thrusters with the RCS Button. (RCS - Rocket Control Systems activates small Manoeuvring Thrusters which help turn and push the Craft in small increments. On smaller Crafts they do more to turn the ship and on larger Crafts they do less to turn the ship. RCS doesn't turn on and off the Reaction Wheels, those are controlled with QWEASD, and can be used for stability by turning on SAS)

The invalid message is because you’re still holding onto the capsule. You can’t take a surface sample while still holding onto the ladder😂

hey fyi if the science button on the sidebar is flashing you can click it and it'll automatically get all the science possible for your situation. no need to manually run experiments! also the "invalid research location" thing was because you were still holding onto the craft.
edit: also also at 12:20 you were pointed at prograde instead of the maneuver plan (second button on that bottom bar). for this specific maneuver it was the same direction so it didn't matter but figured that might be useful info!

it's more than doubled since patch 5.
that's probably over 3 or so times better than launch
