      Hey! Having grown up with ADHD and thus fidgeting with anything I could get my hands on, I actually know *exactly* what's going on with that bell! More specifically, with the whole "button being pressed for 10 minutes" thing, anyway.
      These types of bells, (or at least, most of them), don't actually use a spring at all. The button is just a metal rod that rests directly on top of a lever, with the other end of the lever being a small metal weight. So you press down on the button, the lever directly under it gets moved down, moving the other end with the weight on it up, striking the side of the bell and causing it to ring. Then, when you stop pressing the button, the weight on the bell-ringing-side of the lever pulls it back down, moving the top part of the lever up, which is then pushing the button back up into its resting position.
      So since the button is simply resting on top of the lever, the thing keeping it held up is just the weight. If you were to move the bell around a bit, the button would bob up and down slightly even without the bell ringing, since the weight is moving around. That "being pressed half-way down" is actually its default position, and it being up farther after being rung is nothing more than friction holding the button up, (as in, it's no longer even resting on the lever). The buttons get stuck up like that all the time. Here's a video of someone ringing one that shows exactly what I mean--watch the button closely: th-cam.com/video/PgIqLJYHjjQ/w-d-xo.html
      So yeah. That part, at least, is "debunked", because there's nothing unusual even happening. That's just how those bells work. As for the rest of it... if I had to guess, I'd say the bell is in the foreground, and the background is simply added in via greenscreen. It would explain why everything in the background is perfectly motionless, and would make it much, much easier to use something to press the button/move the weight and then edit it out without it looking like a cut.

      There aren't wires (especially not a weighted wire) because ANY sort of movement would be shown via the cloth of the couch. Magnets are not really an option because unless he got a super magnet embedded into the couch... It's not moving. On top of that he would need to rig up a mechanism inside/underneath the couch to bring the magnet slowly closer to the serface of the cushions; there would have to be a leaver system in place for that to work. A rusty spring still acts like a spring, how could the plunger spring cause the plunger to slip and trigger the hammer if the spring is designed to allow the plunger to return back on place, those springs hold the plunger up... So it can't somehow "selectively slip" the plunger downwards. The only way that could happen is if the spring is warped, in which case the plunger would stay at that fixed height and never return to the default position which it is later shown to enter.
      Either there is something pressing the plunger down, or he completely ruined his couch for a video he didn't even bothering trying to follow up on

    • @bananasinfrench
      @bananasinfrench 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ace Crutch Right? Like the biggest confounding factor is the fact that the environment stays perfectly still. You might expect to see the camera jiggle if there was movement behind the scenes, too. Theatrics aren’t convincing. Small stuff like this? That’s what gets ya

    • @pickk90
      @pickk90 4 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      If you know what you're doing it can even be done with only the footage and after effects in about a few hours. The box that he added behind the bell makes it even easier but the question then is does he have the knowledge and skill to do it so seamlessly? Maybe, I mean he's an artist and they often at least dabble in multiple medium plus he probably already use after effects to edit his regular video so I don't think that it's unreasonable to think that he edited the video in some way

      That'd be hard to pull off, especially for a musician, he'd have to digitally re-create pretty much everything to get it to look good. He'd have to get a panorama of his room for the lighting to match, he'd have to 3D Model the bell, his hand from the reflections shown, the tobacco tin and pretty much everything in the shot, if you look at the reflection you can even see the roof, which if it was cgi would either be a HDRI (High dynamic range image) or a remodel of his roof, it'd take an incredibly long time just to get that right, not to mention animating which is way, way harder than it looks, especially getting the motions to look realistic. I'm not saying its 100% real, but cgi doesn't seem to be used, unless this musician is secretly an amazing cg artist.

  • @1991birthday

    I have an old bell as well, designed differently, it’s a lion with a bell on it but has the same function, it use to belong to my grandparents who kept it on the bar in their basement which is a place I’d sometimes sleep when I was little. They also kept the legos in the bar so I was around that bell a lot growing up & it’s an older bell, something I noticed about it is that it can be sensitive to movement. When my little sister stomped around & whatnot near the bell, it would shake a little, causing the stem to partially fall & ring the bell. If that bell in particular has weak support for the stem, maybe something as simple as a nearby train could cause it to fall? My bell isn’t that loose & doesn’t ring that easily but maybe this one does? It’s just a suggestion, I actually do believe in the paranormal but I watched a ton of ghost hunting shows growing up so I know to debunk before assuming it’s something paranormal which is something you have tried, I’m not good at debunking so I typically take other people’s words for things much better & my guess could be a long reach. I’m pretty sure the guy who made the video is unaware of what’s causing the bell to do this, it might not be paranormal but that doesn’t mean he knows what’s causing it.
    This is something that Scare Theatre could potentially figure out, this is right down his alley so I hope someone sends this his way.

    18 years of working in video production professionally. You're actually seeing motion blur as the top part moves down. This could be done in After Effects. But it would be a lot of work to do it to make it look real. There'd be tricks that a person might do to make it easier, like fake autofocusing & such. But there's not. He'd also need to do it in a higher resolution then composite it correctly and compress it to make it look more simple. I don't believe this guy did that. I think it's real. Or at least post-production trickery was not done in my opinion.

It just seems like this guy wanted to show off a cool thing he discovered, and that makes it really probable that it's real imo. Most people I know who claim to know about a real ghost haunting something/somewhere are super chill about it, like something spooky will happen and they'll be like "oh yeah that's just our ghost Harold, he can be weird like that sometimes."

    For anyone who thinks he might have used after effects, or some kind of special effects, remember this.
    You're quality of after effects has to match the quality of your video. With a video like this that is clearly recorded on a phone, and is filmed in a lower light (but not low-light), any effect added or removed would be very noticeable. There's a reason why movies with lots of after effects added need to be filmed in a specific way, with specific lighting. For him to do something with this footage would be insanely hard, even a simple sample wipe to remove an object pressing/pulling the button would be really noticeable.

    This would be super easy with very little editing. Tripod + solid red background of the can behind it makes this super easy.
    Here's how I would do it:
    1) Take a video of the bell ringing with your finger obscuring the top as little as possible.
    2) Take the while video as it is shown uploaded. But bell never actually rings
    3) mask out frame by frame the finger in the bell ringing footage (in the similar way that people add green screen background to videos to make memes. Think of "are you outta your mind?!" guy being out into different things.
    4) place the mask so just the bell ringing is over the original video (leave rest of the footage same so the reflections never change) (this is made much easier by the solid red background behind the bell button mechanism which seems to make you wonder why he put it there in the first place?)
    Not saying this is how it was done, but definitely how I would have done it.
    Also to say he didn't do it to profit is kinda silly. I have made so many dumb little fx videos and edits like this with a friend for fun with no intention of making money from it.

    you can do it with a string through the couch cushion. those bells dont have springs in them, the weight of the dinger pushes the plunger back up. They often get stuck halfway. Dinging it once will often reset the plunger all the way up.

  • @mow_cat
    @mow_cat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Maybe there is a weak magnet inside the bell or the furniture constantly tugging down on the bell ringy thingy and there is a clear string connected to that ringy thingy (vertically) so all it takes to ring is someone to quickly let the string go down a little and pull it back up. It would also be able to hold it at halfway.

    As for the magnet theory, if the bell is made from the same materials as other bells which is copper and tin then a magnet wouldn't work as neither of those are magnetic metals. Unless of course the magnet was inside the bell. However ignoring magnets I would say it was done with a string tied to the inside of the bell that would come undone after a particularly hard tug. This would explain why the plunger was also semi-pressed before the bell was pushed the final time since the weight of the string was keeping it down (Although at the beginning of the video it was further down and got further up after being pressed so maybe the bell just does this normally?). Since the bell was only properly pressed once in the video, I think this is how it was done since it would be impossible to pull the thing down after the string had come undone. As for the other end of the string it could be routed through a hole in the couch, which given the colour of the couch, the brightness of the area, and the quality of the video, I think would be hard to see.

    I would guess that if this was manufactured, if you disassemble the bell, you would find something interesting mechanically on the inside that slowly triggers this randomly, the elaborateness being intentional to lend to believability. Artists, musicians, writers, and other creators are the kinds of people who could meticulously craft a good hoax imo, especially if they have any friends or relatives with mechanical or engineering backgrounds.
    My dad is an engineer, I really ought to show him this when he gets off from work and ask his opinion. That or I could always see if a much busier, more well known engineer and inventor would be willing to answer an email, but I really don't think that I should bother him over something like this, even if he's the kind of clever guy who I could see creating something like this.

      I thought about this too, the only issue is when he showed the underside of the bell showing it is hollow and not taken up by any mechanics, so any mechanics would have to be watch sized stuff specifically designed to fit in the ringer. I dunno if that's even possible, and if it is that's a lot of work for a video that barely got any traction.

    The bell is clearly mechanical. Consider the speed and movement of it, esp. the reset. You don't need to have anything underneath it for it to be mechanical. Because the dome shape of the bell has enough room to store a mechanism. It can be powered by batteries. You don't need powerful batteries either.

If you stick an electromagnet under the couch cushion and then set the charge on it to be relatively low then it'll have a weak magnetic field that might pull the plunger down a bit. Maybe when he felt he had made things tense enough he just cranked the voltage up a touch and then killed it so it would go down and then up again.

    It most certainly can be a magnet, since the bell itself is not a magnetic alloy, but the spring could have been replaced with one made from a magnetic alloy. Or there could be a magnetic piece attached to the plunger (piece you press). The magnet might have been close, but not close enough, to cause the spring to fully compress. And that’s why the plunger of the bell is moving up and down.
