      My thoughts exactly... with the current COVID-19 lockdown and closures of fitness clubs and public showers I'll bet a lot of van lifers who built their vans with no shower are regretting it now? And especially if they are in colder climates where an outdoor shower isn't gonna work so well.

    Murphy beds are a top-notch choice for vans and RV's. You can just flip them up and out of the way without having to fully strip the bed twice every darned day. There is so little space in a van that dedicating 50% of it to a permanent bed just doesn't sit right with me. Some people prioritize stuff like a bike garage over living space; not me. There are two ways I know of to have a bed you can put away mostly made, and that's the murphy bed, and a more technologically advanced elevating bed that you can hoist into the ceiling in the daytime.

    • @vaskylark
      @vaskylark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I totally agree BUT I would want a sitting area like with a comfy couch so would have to figure out a way that the murphy bed would lay down properly on some sort of makeshift platform without crushing the couch. I did not like the seating she had at all, looked uncomfortable to me but it was totally the right idea.

    • @kathyannk
      @kathyannk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think those beds you hoist are more for tiny houses, because they have more height than a van. :)

      @@vaskylarkI agree. The seating area looked very uncomfortable for sitting for long periods. It's a beautiful van but sure doesn't look very comfy for relaxing, reading a book or anything. Maybe laying on the bed would be ok but who wants to lay in bed evry time you wanna sit and relax.

  • @purplebun76

    Love the whole set up ! It really like that you were 1. able to get the van/build done all together and priced together 2. that you have a composting toilet 3. the murphy bed 4. the large freshwater tank 4. the ton of storage... pretty much everything!

    • @beckyelliott2871
      @beckyelliott2871 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am working hard on my budget getting bills paid totally OFF, and learning how to live on fixed income.
      I like the idea of a Sprinter van with a simple set-up with, of course, a shower-toilet space, cooking- food prep-eating station storage and a bed.
      The murphy bed is a viable choice, but so is an easy accessible bed that also serves as a storage area for stuff accessible from the back door. Inside, I need space to slide a cat box for Cat without being too visible.
      I would prefer infloor radiant heat and good ventilation and solar capable. Electric appliances and good lighting. Not asking too much, huh?

    Drew Barrymore vibes! Strong opinions about the microwave! Microwave prepared food is generally ick, but there are some great high quality conscious brands out there. And you can reheat your own cooked food in the microwave so... I wouldn't say it's all "garbage". ☺

    • @estherstrategicadvisor749
      @estherstrategicadvisor749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lol! So true re #DrewBarrymoreVibes
      It's ACTUALLY not just the microwaves that contaminate the food we heat up in a Microwave. The ARTIFICIAL THINGS like PRESERVATIVES & DYES are the problem too, even if you DON'T microwave it. There's a REASON our generation has HIGHER CANCER RATES than ever before.
      🔹I still use the microwave, especially because I love my store-bought pizza, doughy and not crispy. I'm SLOWLY weaning myself off it by heating things up on the stove but IT'S HARD because of the convenience & less clean-up. Eventually I'll have to discipline myself to use a TOASTER OVEN though....

      @@estherstrategicadvisor749 the microwave is a tool. I cook all of my meals from simple ingredients, don't eat anything processed if I can help it. It's easy to boil corn, eat with some salad and shredded chicken with rice - make at the campground and keep for meals. Oatmeal, water, fruit, etc. Keep it simple. I always know what's in my food.

    • @maryloufulton957
      @maryloufulton957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I heard/read microwaves can strip away food's original nutrients. And so what may have started as a nutritious meal has now evolved into "dead food" due to "dielectric heatings of microwaves". It is totally no bueno to microwave breast milk due to these reasons. Microwaves destroy breastmilk and Vit B12. I think if breastmilk, which is the most nourishing food for babies as long as possible, shouldn't be microwaved due to loss of microwaves killing important antibodies, and lysozymes, then microwaving foods in general can't be healthy. Research found that microwaved breastmilk kills lysozyme activity and also promoted the growth of harmful bacteria for babies. I personally don't microwave my food barely ever. If it is my only option, I'll break down and do it. But I really never use one. I have one in my kitchen, but I use the stove to reheat. And the radiation that microwaves emit as well as the denaturing of the food it is heating is a huge reason I don't use the microwave.

    I think I would redesign the bathroom section. I saw a similar setup in another tiny house that used that same space as a "wet room". It held the toilet and a shower hose and shower curtain that could be hung up to a rod hanging from the ceiling. It was all waterproof and you could fold it all away. Also, you did not have to set up the shower to use the toilet. But you couldn't store anything in there because it would get wet.

    The Murphy bed is something I would have put in first. I’m even thinking of a futon mattress that can be rolled up, stowed away, and washed when necessary. The outdoor shower is something I’m not crazy about, but the extra internal space is probably worth it. I also like the set-up with the dining/main table. The only thing i would probably add would be a decent amount of refrigeration and freezer space so that I can cook a bunch of food all at once and keep for several weeks or even two months. That would also require a stack of PVs on the roof of the van.
    The above notwithstanding, this is a really nice and simple set-up with decent use of the available space, and you don’t need a degree in electrical engineering to run the thing, or be at the mercy of a paid technician when something goes wrong.

    Excellent setup! Superb bathroom arrangement. Murphy bed seems like it would work quite easily. One thing that surprises me about many of the van build videos I watch, including this one, is how many vanlifers want space to "entertain" others, and seat others, in their van. I am surprised by this because, given the very small amount of space in a van, I would not have expected many would want to dedicate space to entertaining others. I would have thought it would be just fine to entertain others on chairs outside.
    With this particular setup, it makes sense to have benches on both sides of the rear of van because of the Murphy Bed. However in other van builds, the extra space for additional seating doesn't seem to make as much sense.
    Anyway, I love watching van build videos and seeing all the many creative ways people build their own homes. I think the one thing that stands out most about vanlifer videos is how happy people are that they have "their own home"...whether they live in it full time or part time, it's their own, and for many, it's the only home that is their own so this means a lot.

      People washed from a sink or a bowl for hundreds of years. Showers only became common well into the second half of the late 20th century home fixture. Even bathrooms are quite recent and in the years before WW2 in America nearly half of houses still didn't have piped hot water, a bath or shower - or a flush toilet. The other thing that's relatively recent is showering every day which unless you have solar or wind power in environmentally unfriendly.

      my 89 yr old father-in-law buys nylon underwear and socks so he can do his laundry in the sink (he still travels!)... I can't imagine wearing nylon!. I think a good salad spinner would work for small items and you could always use it for washing your salad greens!

      007nadineL. I understand what you mean. If they were made in different sizes for smaller spaces that would be good. But with a regular sized wonderwash it can be used outdoors and eliminates laundromat visits or having to own an electric washing machine.

      Agreed, my 24' 2002 minnie winnie class c runs fine on every component. If sold to another for $20 k, they would be way ahead of any $60k+ newer van build. Size and gas mileage diff yes but she could sleep 5 adults comfortably, full kitchen, 3/4 bath, dinette and sofa! Young ppl would appreciate that in the winter or in Pandemics. And i also sleep in my subaru when going stealth. Camped in my pickup/tent before rv.

    Beautiful design. I've always said that not having an inside shower is a bad idea. So many people rely on a gym for their showers. But if you are out in the wilderness and there is no gym around or when something like this virus is going around and all the gyms are closed, then you don't get to take a shower. I bet all those people who said they didn't need a shower because they have the gym are sorry now.

      The website gives you a really good idea of how much they cost. Compared to other places, I think that they are a bit expensive. She used off-grid Adventure vans in Maryland. But Maryland is expensive so you're going to pay lore. I would recommend custom coach Creations in Florida. They also give you pricing up front on their website. You can start a full conversion for as low as 16K. I haven't personally used them but if I had a van and could afford to then I would.

      I dont think shes saying if you don't agree, etc. I think shes saying that is the conclusion she has reached based on the Info she has. Too often a difference in information is fallaciously reduced to a "difference of opinion." Anything can sound like an opinion when phrased the way she did or when the other person does not have the same information. Do you know what happens to the molecular structure of food that has been microwaved? Maybe if you did, even if you choose not to "agree," you might at least understand why she feels that way. ;)
