Great review. I had one of these (and previous S2K's) and it remains one of my all time favorite cars. The shifter is still a benchmark among car guys who know their stuff, and the original S2K was a pioneer with electric power steering that was good from the very beginning (some companies -- I'm talking about you BMW -- struggled with EPS for a long time). I totally regret selling all of my S2Ks but my life was moving in a different direction. Wish I still had one of them to hide in my barn.
Regarding power, it's an interesting observation. At the time, one of the joys of the S2K was winding it out and enjoying the shifter. But you could also really enjoy the car at part throttle, shifting at mid RPM (still pretty high). That is not true of many modern sports cars that either have too much power, or rev hang, or both. Or they require you to break traction or break the law to have fun. I have an M2 Competition and most of its identity is about power and the exhilarating point and squirt acceleration. The rev hang -- a trademark of modern engines -- is very noticeable and takes some of the joy out of a manual transmission. But I found an interesting twist -- if I want to enjoy the M2C under legal conditions or part throttle, I need to put the throttle setting in comfort mode, which takes a little of the brute force out of the engine and lets you enjoy the shifter and savor the overall experience while running up to mid RPMs. All that power and modern engine technology needs to be crippled a little bit to get back to the sort of experience the S2K gave you all the time with no conditions. I'd say the S2K had a more honest, more genuine driving experience that most modern sports cars can't give you. Power isn't everything.

The Porsches still had low-end grunt, it was just more fun to be higher in the rev range. The S2000, on the other hand, feels like an anemic 90s Civic at low RPM and so it's mandatory to keep the revs up to not feel like the shittiest turd you've ever driven in your life (thanks, 2.0 liter displacement).

I had a 2006 Miata ("NC") that had some nice mods (intake, exhaust, suspension, brakes, sway bars, etc.). It was a lot of fun, felt fast, and every time I drove it I couldn't help but smile. I now have a 2003 S2000 that is mostly stock. I have to admit that around town the Miata was easier to live with while the S2000 seems like it's not entirely happy just running around town. It feels like it wants to get out and really run. When I have it out in the canyons and twisties I am always very impressed by its handling and balance. It's way better than the Miata was when i push it hard. IMO, if you want a daily driver, consider an NC Miata, but if you want something more advanced, get an S2000 if you can.

I still hold he needs to drive an AP1 with the F20c engine in order to experience the S2000 at it's best.
The F22c engine is great, but the 9000rpm redline of the original is what the car was designed around.
