This is why I'm slowly migrating to Linux, Windows 11 is just a slap to the face to everyone who has been loyal to Microsoft for decades. Its no secret that apps such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. will never bring native support onto linux which is why me and my colleagues started to study similar apps work that is available which are crossplatform but especially on Linux running better.
It will take awhile however, it is the best route - considering the Smart App will definitely put outdated applications under the "not deemed" list in the near future. Once W10 support ends, Microsoft will force people to go to Windows 11 which is a check mate. Nope, its time evolve alongside where freedom literary means freedom and nothing else.

Well, you can still run 'untrusted' software on Mac. I think I've never bought anything from the apple store. However they did this trick to ios and can pull it at any time to their computers.
And people actually like it, you know. Remember the game consoles? They are doing this shit for decades and how do people feel about it? They love it, bragging about premium subscriptions and 'exclusive content' they have. No wonder that the PC is becoming a new console with an ability to occasionally use a keyboard.

Imagine if you had to install the google play store to download TH-cam, or having to download Origin to play EA mobile games, or having to download Epic’s launcher to play Fortnite, or the Microsoft store to get the office suite
And that’s pretty much what’s happening with pc gaming and it sucks, im honestly fed up with this, I miss when I could buy and play all of my games on steam, but not anymore, and don’t get me started with the weird bugs you’ll have to fix ESPECIALLY if you’re running older games, all of this just made me go back to my ps4.
I took it off the shelf when I wanted to play The Last of Us, the process was so simple, plug in the console, open the ps store, buy the game, download it, play it.
I didn’t have to download a separate Naughty Dog store to then get my credit card info in there so then I could buy the game
Ofc many people might like this or be indifferent to it but it really ruined the experience for me specifically, which makes me kinda sad because I love playing on my pc.

And I never use the MS store at all, because I can't even get working sounddrivers for my board there. Oh, I head THAT. This is still one of my major gripes about new W10 installs - that they try VERY HARD to force you to use a MS logon PIN to logon to the machine. Something I ALWAYS bypass by doing the full install with the network UNPLUGGED so you don't get the prompts to force that, but even then, when you do the updates, W10 then tries the same trick, but it seems to be easier to say no to it at that point then it is if W10 finds the internet during initial install. I absolutely HATE the MS PIN type logon system, and I have had more then a few clients call me cos they can't logon, cos for whatever reason, the MS server is not responding at that time, so you are stuck at the logon screen. That is fucking madness, and I am sorry to see that MS have not learned from all the negative feedback about that, and are pushing ahead with even crazier ideas with W11. Well, I won't be upgrading to W11 any time soon. I built a new machine for a client, and it has started pestering him to upgrade to W11 for free, and I have told him NOT to EVER do that without asking me first. He asked me why, I said: "I don't know enough about the stability of W11 yet, to be recommending it to anyone, so just stay away from it for the moment as there could be bugs they need to fix." Seems like W11 itself might be one giant bug.

Whether you'll get bloatware or spyware really depends on the Linux distro you're using. Do you want user friendliness but don't like Canonical's commercial crap that they keep shoving unto Ubuntu? Linux Mint is basically Ubuntu without the commercial crap.
Do you want absolute power and control over your system? Do you want to pick and choose every single package you install? Arch Linux provides exactly that.
Do you want the latest stuff, the bestest, the newest? While still enjoying the backing of a proven and experienced company with excellent user help? Fedora is there for you.

"Since the days of Windows 10" That's funny right there! I've been forking with open source OS's since 1998, particularly looking for desktop OS. I've wiped Windows many times installing various open source OS's, and every time I found them lacking - until I did it again in 2015 when Windows 10 came out. Windows has had several craptastic versions of Windows, each one of them pushed me to try an open source desktop environment again - and every time I ended up going back to an older version of Win until they released one that didn't suck as bad as the flop. Windows Me, Vista, 8 - huge fails.

I smell class-action lawsuit here. This is one way to completely kill Windoze - prevent people from using it unless MS approve of the app you are using.
And we all know that 3rd party app suppliers, will have to pay MILLIONS to get the special MS approval to allow their stuff to run on W11 under this shit, so....

I was rather happy using Windows 98->XP->7. I had tried Linux some years ago (Ubuntu 6), but I wasn't convinced. Then Microsoft starts this aggressive campaign pushing Windows 10 down my throat. I didn't like that so I watched some videos about Linux and chose Linux Mint 18 to try out (dual boot on a new disk I bought). Then my Win7 hangs itself in an eternal loop of trying to install an update->fail->reboot->trying to install an update->fail... At that time I already had another OS that worked nicely, so I didn't bother to fix my W7. And here I am, using LM 20.3 happily.

    - it will require Microsoft account
    - will require Internet connection when installing
    - will require laptop to have a working front facing camera
    - all privacy switches are set to share data with Microsoft by default (not to minimal, only necessary data)
    - smart app control
This is a trend in software industry. We need to see you. We need to hear you. You have to have your own digital ID, that we can identify you with. Neftlix is chopping down sharing accounts for example.

The latter group would rather hire experts to perform tasks even if it means they pay more for what they get. Convenience is the name of the game for this group.
Sadly, much of the population is of the latter type. Even if you somehow get them to a much healthier OS ecosystem, they still won't go beyond surface-level understanding, which leads to a lot of frustration. The thing that could sink Windows as a platform if Linux can beat Windows to the punch with ARM or RISCV support. X86 has a decade at best left in it, as it will produce more energy and heat as transistor sizes shrink below the nanometre. I would argue that Linux has better ARM support than Windows and if we can get Android apps working natively on Linux through Anbox, there may be a day of the Linux desktop and Microsoft will just make or buy a distribution flavour of Linux to run in the cloud.

The document size doesn’t matter, either. About 2018, I wrote two illustrated instruction manuals completely on HTML. I did this for a client. Both projects were indistinguishable to my usual output with Word. (Or FrameMaker, or Quark, etc. )

@@w9xk Microsoft Access is uniquely made as a relational database program for intensive files that allow concentrated file management to be done as easy as using small database files. Many computer operators prefer to use Microsoft Excel for tasks consisting of flat-file databases. Your use for Microsoft Access is still remarkable, and you will discover flexible database management with Access that will make you work like a professional end user. For instance, I use only Microsoft Access when I print laminated label tapes for church members to receive their Sabbath School and Bible Study guides, but I have flexibility to add, edit names in the list of my database file, and select only the names of the members and other attendees who attend Sabbath School at least weekly, with my Brother P-touch label printer. One beauty of the job is that I may choose any color label tape that the Sabbath School secretary or superintendent can affix on to the guide books. Also, I list names and addresses of people who are to receive letters with their information merged into such a file into Microsoft Word for easy printing. Otherwise, I use Microsoft Access for all indexing and filing jobs right in the privacy of my home. There is no need for me to resort to commuting, even though I own no motor vehicle. I had a ton of issues with Windows 10, but the moment I decided to switch to Linux was when I caught it deleting my programs without even asking me. This happened TWICE. I was already very frustrated with it, as I had been using it for 5 years, and it was constant updates, slowdowns and other issues like random reboots or the screen just going dark for no reason, requiring you to reboot.
I had been a Windows user my whole life up to that point. I mostly used 98, XP and 7, but had a little experience with other versions, like ME, Vista and 8. I had never had to question the OS I was using, until Windows 10. Because I can deal with some issues, I can even probably tolerate involuntary updates. But when it starts deleting your programs, this is beyond inexcusable in my opinion. I had this uncanny feeling, that someone else is snooping in my computer. This seems like something straight out of cyberpunk tbh. Here's the messed up part: every time I tell people about it, they say that they haven't had the same problem. Like Windows 10 was only doing it to me for some weird reason. Even with this video, it seems like this is something new they're implementing. I dunno maybe they just thought those programs to be viruses, but it did delete them.
I think this is one of the reasons I really stuck with Linux. Linux has its own fair share of flaws, and people should stop pretending like it doesn't. But I went into it with the mindset of "if I can perform the same functions, even if it's more difficult, I will stay". Because going back was almost not an option. And I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does Linux allow you to perform all the same functions, it is mostly just as easy and quick. You just have to find yourself the right distro. For me it turned out to be Linux Mint Cinnamon. I would say, about 80-90% of my workflow was not hampered at all, but was even slightly improved (due to the customization Cinnamon allows). The biggest problem, of course, is installing games that aren't on Steam or Lutris. It's such a hassle sometimes, that I often just put it off, even when I really wanna play some specific game. You can also run into problems when you're trying to do something very specific, for which the system didn't account for. Also things occasionally just break here and there. For example, my bluetooth stopped working on two occasions, and I had to spend hours searching for solutions. But, like I said, Windows 10 wasn't without issues either.
It is weird to me, however that on every other distro I run into way more problems than on Mint. It's kinda baffling to me that people often recommend those distros over Mint. Very often I feel like an alien within the Linux community, because it's almost as if I'm having completely different experiences from 99% of people.
To conclude this, would I say that Linux Mint is my favorite OS of all time? Probably not. That would still be Windows XP, with 98 and 7 coming second and third respectively. But in this day and age, I honestly feel like you can't find a better OS. And despite me having more issues on other distros, I'd still pick any distro over Windows 8, 10 or 11. And even if Microsoft came out with a perfect OS today, I'd still not go back. I have lost my trust in that company, or in fact in proprietary systems in general. I still use proprietary software, but not an entire OS, because once it betrays you, adapting to a new one means pretty much changing your entire lifestyle.

You're definitely right on this. As I mentioned in my reply, I am also a seasoned Windows user, who joined the train at the 3.11 station. But it grosses me out how much Windows 10 and especially 11 sucks. It's burden after burden after burden.
It still doesn't hurt me enough, so I didn't switch the main OS on my desktop yet (I tried though and PCIe-Passthrough might be the way to go.. Linux for everything except games). Luckily for me I've already gotten some Linux knowledge by running my Ubuntu home server for over 10 years after I decided Windows 2012 sucked and I am happy with it.
I also gave PCIe-Passthrough a chance, but it still is somewhat complicated even after initial set up. It seemed unstable and I did experience a very minor performance downgrade, but if Windows keeps getting shittier, this is definitely an option.

I am in both shoes on this one. As a long time security professional and software developer I just can't have this operating on my system and for a lot of gamers and tech professional / enthusiasts this is not a wanted feature. On the other hand there are a ton of general users that are not very technically savvy that this is perfect for. My in-laws and other friends who come to me all the time I would so enable this on their systems because they don't install a bunch of other software this is good protection. I do understand the reset to enable / disable the system as well. If it was simple to switch back and forth a hacker would find a way sooner or later to do the same. I think on a new system it needs to be an option on first boot not enabled by default.

I totally agree with you. If you really read the EUA (End User Agreement) from Microsoft. You just allow Microsoft to do what ever they want with your computer. Not even your own files are really yours as if they want to delete all of them, you just have to see how they do it. I moved to GNU/Linux long time ago, as I was totally pis...off from "hard disk" failures that left me with a no data. Now I only use Windows to play some games that are not running under linux at the moment but I'm using windows 10 an will not upgrade.

My only regret about Linux is that I didn't make the switch earlier! Stories like this just solidify and reinforce my decision. I really like this video and videos like this because it gives me more ammo to sell other folks on Linux instead of Windows. I have been daily drivering Ubuntu for about 5 years now with absolutely no regrets. The forced Windows 10 updates that repeatedly crashed my systems and Microsoft removing the ability to disable said updates was the last straw! Guess how many Linux updates have caused me issues? Top that out with an OS upgrade and having Microsoft programs have compatibility problems. It's like getting the old error "Please wait while Windows searches for Windows". I entirely agree, but I'm unfortunately part of a small subset of marketers and graphic designers that uses VR as a platform. If I can't ensure my work displays properly on currently-proprietary and Windows-locked devices (e.g. the Meta/Oculus devices), I'm effectively out of a job.
So for now, I'm stuck using two machines: one boots Linux Mint for my general gaming needs and anything personal, and the other boots in Windows 11. I know the Valve Index is close to being entirely workable in Linux, but I can't force the industry's hand on my own, nor force the more affordable HMD manufacturers to implement decent Linux support.
And yes, I've tried running Windows in a container with a GPU passthrough. If Oculus' drivers can't have direct, bare-metal access to my GPU, the setup shits the bed more often than not. I also can't force the Documentation team to append a disclaimer that'd read something along the lines of "This product is exclusive to the Index" - not when our typical end-user is Joe Average being lent a cheap headset at a car dealership in order to go on a quick walkthrough of a displayed car.
Until the market broadens or I switch jobs, I'm stuck riding the fence.

I own a couple of computer and while my biggest one is still running Windows for.. I don't know why really, I don't play games anymore. I'm migrating the rest to Linux. My main laptop that I carry everywhere around is on KDE Neon and oh boy, have I never been so satisfied with an OS before. It runs much smoother and the battery life has doubled or trippled, seriously. The only thing I lost is the fingerprint reader because I didn't find a driver for it. And well, the damn nVidia GPU card, I don't even know if it's working but I can play 4K so it's probably fine. Most of the apps we use day to day are already web apps, so every day there's less need for an OS to be fair, so right now is one of the best moments to just switch and don't ever look back.
One question though, what OS would you recommend for phones? Not Apple for sure, but I would like to keep Android APK support. I know there's an ungoogled Android but I was wondering if there were even better alternatives.

I use Simplewall to block traffic to anything I don't want going online. Disabled services related to telemetry and disabled telemetry in Group Policy. Blocked telemetry and updates in Simplewall(I manually apply security updates every month). I completely agree with your criticisms directed at Windows 11 and Home/Pro versions of 10, but if you know what you're doing, you can run Windows and also own your PC. I still want to switch to Linux, but everytime I try it, I run into issues with software availability. There's nothing like Adobe Premiere Pro on Linux and gaming still sucks on Linux. Still, on my laptop where I don't game, it might just work this time.

It's not about control but more about setting up multiple revenue streams where they can bill you monthly for software you normally used to buy. Even Windows is going in this direction where eventually they'll charge you a monthly fee for various aspects of what used to be standard and got from paying for the box at the store. Imagine paying like five cents a file when you copy or move files from one drive/device to another. Imagine getting charged access fees to your documents and pictures cause they're all in the cloud.
Money... that's what it's really about. Not only can you the person who owns the PC be charged multiple service fees for software use but also farmed for metrics to sell your preferences, likes, etc to advertisers. That is where this is all going with Microsoft and why they're putting together a large stable of game studios. Just recently they bought Blizzard Entertainment other studios under the umbrella Blizzard is under. Microsoft now has Warcraft/Starcraft/Diablo/etc to bulk up their gaming fees on Xbox and such. You can't even uninstall X-Box from Windows 11 or get games like Minecraft outside of the Microsoft store and why Windows 11 requires a Microsoft account.
The pieces are going in to place. Next thing you know your Windows PC will bill you monthly for what all you want to do on it. So not only are you paying for internet and subscriptions to games like World of Warcraft but other games you wouldn't normally pay a monthly fee for as well as software you wouldn't normally pay a monthly fee for. The more people paying on a regular basis the more revenue they generate. Think of windows users are cows having the sucker hooked up to the wallet to milk it for all the dollars.

So a question I have is, since I have several google email accounts that I've had for years, could those accounts be transferred to Linux, because I have years of information in those accounts, or would I have to delete all those email accounts and start over? I agree that MS has control over the material that I purchased from MS store, but they have now turned into a dictatorship and I don't like the idea of being denied any program or app they choose to be unacceptable. Thanks

Yes, you just download yourself an email client, sync your Google accounts to your client and you'll have everything right there in it.

This sounds like a huge law suit waiting to happen. Remember what happened in the EU with "internet explorer." Also there is a ton of mistrust with Silicon Valley anyway. I guess I'll keep rocking win7 for the time being or at least until majority of games moves to linux then I'll move.

You touched on locking down software on our phones. I recently wanted to try some degoogled or Linux OS's on my older phones, but turns out Verizon won't allow that? On phones that I own!?

      Yep, they are locked down.

That's pretty wild. I use a mac as my main work computer and they introduced something similar in Catalina, "gatekeeper" or something similar to that, but you can just toggle it on or off from the terminal, no OS reinstall needed of course. The whole deal with binding Windows to hardware uuids I also find rather absurd from Microsoft. With my macs I am fully aware that they are not upgradable and I can't just switch hardware willy nilly unless I have a Mac Pro. But with Windows which is supposed to be all about modularity and working on "everything" and different configs it's absurd that you can't switch out as much hardware as you wish before they invalidate your license. I left Windows 12 years as a user, and I'd rather stick forks in my eyes before going back. I pondered getting a Linux based pc for gaming but I hardly game anymore so it was hard to justify, but if I ever get a non mac again it will for sure be a Linux box.

I would not disagree to what you say. But there are apps that are not at all and never going to be available for professional use. I work in Automotive Industry. The tools that I use will never be available to Linux. Trust me, I used Linux for one year & I have had a very great experience and I do really wish to continue using.
You get my point where I am going. People like me are not deliberately skipping Linux. TH-cam community is talking only about Photo editing and video editing apps. But there are other professional fields exist which completely & exclusively use only these proprietary Operating systems.

    • @eBuzzCentral

Therein lies the problem, proprietary app makers won't except Linux because it's free and open source
