So use a board underneath that's thicker than the length of the drill bit.

If you put a small piece of tape on the plate before you start to drill it' will stop it from slipping I am from the UK

Your flowers are lovely. It takes time to hunt for the pieces and see what works together, putting it all together…it’s an art, a hobby and looks beautiful in the flower beds.
I see similar ones at the farmers market/antique places around but they are usually glued together.
My husband was (retired) a sales representative for a large retailer in automotive paints. I am familiar with the products/uses that you mentioned. The chameleon paint (not the powder form) that comes in a half pint size can sells for $350. That was 12 years ago so I know it cost quite a bit more today. I like experimenting too. I used it on a bamboo turtle that had hanging wind chimes. Painted it in the peacock chameleon paint; blues, greens, purples beautiful sheen at all different angles. 7 years ago… no sealer and has held up in my climate…no peeling, fading or chipping.
I have 4 true seasons. Rain, snow, drought and windstorms. Holds up better than any I could purchase in any garden section.
I tested on lots of other things… some surfaces it is vital that you sand, prime, paint and seal. If I am working with metal I clean with mineral spirits or vinegar, rinse and dry. Just depends on surface type and if you using for interior or exterior.
I have so much paint-my husband has never liked painting. I love it.
I do miss the discounts on supplies from when he was working.
I used to be a painter I did businesses, houses, churches. I’m familiar with exterior/ interior/chemicals. Learning to use automotive paints and chemicals on other projects besides cars has been a fun hobby ... also painted our RV shop doors in copper and that turned out better than I could’ve imagined. I did faux metal straps that looked like it was riveted to the door.
I will say you shouldn’t mix different brands of paint as some don’t interact well. Just as oil and water don’t mix well.
Also when I first started playing around with automotive paints I had a eagle holding a flag that was made of some type of styrofoam… very densed. I started painting with the automotive paints and it melted the styrofoam.
I also like up-cycling for the sheer joy of seeing the transformation and just to say “yes, I created that!”

There are TH-cam videos to teach you how to drill the holes. I would suggest watching before trying to drill glass
