I can tell you I have watched every video thus far from start to finish and plane to do so to the end.Sometimes I go back a minute or 2 to re watch something. Those that only watch 25% of the video are those that want a quick video of how to do something and directly reflex themselves thru it. They have no commitment to follow step by step and really have no desire to build a lath themselves. Those of us that do watch the full length find it very informative and see a bit of you in ourselves. Cut out or fast forward the drilling and tapping as well as the surface grinding. I take my hat of to you. For years I to wanted a lath and considered building one and I am 46 and still have not taken the steps to do it, here you are much younger showing us older people how to do it. We thank you for sending the time on showing us the step by step building process.
Okay dude, I know this is an old video but I just recently discovered your channel and I’ve watched a lot of your videos now. I don’t comment on anything pretty much ever but I am trying to build a small personal machine shop in a single bay of a 2 car garage. I started from scratch with hardly any tools and I’ve gotten some stuff complete but still have a long way to go. I decided to try to film myself doing a couple builds and it adds a whole new level of difficulty. When I watch your videos I see almost the exact same things that I’ve been wanting to do. What you’re doing is awesome and amazing and takes a shit ton of skill. Especially doing this stuff alone and especially doing it all while filming it. These people don’t understand the difficulty in what you’re doing so don’t show them weakness. They may only watch a small percentage because they would like to do these things themselves but they’re not willing to put in the work and find the resources to make stuff like this possible. Keep doing your thing and be patient man. You have an awesome channel and it’s inspiring to guys like myself. I think we’re about the same age and you have what looks like my dream setup so just keep going man. You’re killing it. Don’t listen to the bullshit people might say and don’t let anyone change your opinions. And don’t look at the numbers, just focus on the projects and everything else will fall into place. What you sound like on camera doesn’t matter when the quality of your work is as good as yours is. Keep at it dude
I'm telling on myself now......lol.....I didn't realize until today you could track how much of the video was actually watched. Seriously, while I have skimmed through some of the more basic parts, I'm pretty much "glued" to this series. I wish I had done this when I was your age. GREAT work! If anything, the effort you put into the narrations of your videos can only serve to help you get better at it......keep it going! For those of us who struggle with such things, it's therapy.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Most TH-cam analytics show exactly the same length of view time you are seeing, even if it's a huge channel. You young man are literally taking the bull by the balls and doing what most men have only dreamt about. Keep at it, you will get better in front of the camera. Oh, and screw the naysayers. I'd like to see them put together a functional lathe at your age.

I am very impressed by your work. It reminds me of what I was doing when I was your age. Instead of a lathe, I was building a printing machine, but it does not matter that much what it was, I was having a ball, and felt like you, that I was a fool, just because I was making mistakes, which is the most natural thing to do when you undertake an ambitious project, regardless of what it is. Today, I like to call myself "Professor Guvinoff, because the biggest mistake would be to take myself too seriously. Nevertheless, I have several patents to my name, and run my own business for more than 25 years, created jobs, and even exported my products. Another thing: with your creativity and your ambition, you naturally work very hard for extended periods of time. This can lead to tiredness, and a feeling of being sub-par, as you express in this video. Do not sell yourself short, you are actually doing very well! With my best wishes. Dom.

As for your comment at the end... I'm watching and rewatching your vids. Never once had an issue whatsoever with your presentation... You definitely have a gift at technical know-how - it's not the easiest thing in the world to put together a metal lathe, and i am learning alot for a project myself. Who cares if you don't know the name of every single bit of tool, or component, that stuff is almost inconsequential if you are doing stuff for yourself and know what to use and when to use it.

This is the second time I have watched this series. The last one was a few months back. I think you did a great job. Don't concern yourself too much with the negative people. Somebody (I don't remember who it was) once said there should be as much joy in the journey as there is in the destination. That is a point some people miss. I look forward to seeing other builds in the future.

I know this is a couple years past when you made the video, but don't worry about repeating yourself, you are talking while thinking about the next build step. Your mind is more on the project than what you are saying. Yes your videos would be better from a production value perspective, but the content, the process of what you do and how you do it is why most people are watching your videos. Your actions are more important than your words, basically. And what you are doing is very interesting. Thanks for all the time you spent recording and sharing.

Dude, your fine, you prove that a man can accomplish great things with little more than determination, desire, and a need. At your age to spend time building things, and problem solving will carry you far in life. I'm truly impressed, as I too once had more time than money and ventured down this same road and attempted a lathe build. Key word being attempted, mine did not progress as well, and after many attempts, the idea was abandoned. That was a long time before you tube, and I hope more people are influenced by your grit. ---I am impressed by your tool making skill sets. I am from an aviation background and worked with many PE and those with their engineering degrees. I agree with others you are only experiencing the challenge of being self aware as you edit the final product. This is a confidence building exercise but you have really help many who might not otherwise try to duplicate your success here. The examples provided also can be used in other areas of home fabrication of necessary frameworks to make an array of tools. Thank you so much and will finish the whole series. And, yes, you will accomplish much more as you progress. Tool making is a lost art especially in the USA home shop. Kudos and thanks

I watched 100%! I do fast forward a bit through drilling and grinding but make sure to catch the commentary as it's the technical aspects I'm interested in. Glad to see you got a tap holder! lol. I won't lie, the first video of yours I saw I was NOT interested at all...but then I came across the one with the making of the two speed go cart transmission. You've come a long way and the quality of your videos is so much better. When I saw you using your lathe, I thought, "I wonder how hard it would be to make your own lathe". Then I scrolled down, and sure enough, I got my answer. Still have to watch the rest of them, I've been binge watching all morning. Great videos.

I usually watch videos without the sound. Even so, I can understand exactly what you set out to accomplish. For challenged folks like me, purchasing a set of plans from you would be a huge leg up.

I really like your lathe build. You are doing a fantastic job IMO.The amount of knowledge and experience from this build far outweighs any deficiencies the final lathe might have. I consider these sorts of things to be "Works in Progress." They will forever get modified providing the main structure.....The foundation....Is good and sufficient. I think you have that here. Even when it's finished.....If there is slop and it's bolted...Not welded...You can usually shim it. Shims are wonderful. By the way...The grinder on the stand was brilliant. And....FWIW....The video production is 1000% better than anything I could do.
excellent videos. I watch them from start to finish and often rewatch them. If you get criticism listen read it etc BUT don't take too much notice. Most are armchair critics. They love to criicise but rarely try and make something much less show how they are doing it. I'm 67 enjoy the good comments please don't stop showing your work.

don't be so hard on yourself youre making great content, some people will not stay for 25 mins no matter how cool the video is, and if you say 'this thing' a lot just means you'll have something to put on a t-shirt one day, like carsancameras with there 'it'll be fine' or 'for testing purposes only' :P just keep on doing what youre doing and make sure you are enjoying it
I watched the first 25 percent because that's all I had time for bring on break at work, then I got home and watched the rest. I'm really intrigued watching this project keep it going. I understand most of what you explain you're doing next. keep it going I'm eager to see how this turns out. 👍
I know this is an old video and a ton of people already mentioned it, but anyone watching videos like this is here for the content. You do amazing machine work and it's awesome to see someone as young as you building stuff with your hands. Honestly I wouldn't mind more commentary, you repeating yourself doesn't bother me at all.
You never realize how much you say um until you edit your own video! Gets easier though, you start thinking about how you're going to edit while filming, revising as you go. Loving the build so far.
Don't put yourself down. This is going to work. Considering the tools you have at your disposal, your doing well. I don't have a milling machine but I've found ways of making parts that would normally require one. The fun is in the adapting. Keep it up. It's going well.

Don't beat yourself up so much, I think you're doing well. Yes, you repeat yourself and have a few things you could improve, but you know what? You learn while you do things. You're doing far better in your videos than the millions (like myself) who haven't even put up one video. Keep it up, I'm really looking forward to the rest of your build. As regarding people turning away at the 25% mark, I wouldn't worry about it so much. Many people don't have much attention span, and will click away too soon. There's also a wide range of "where people are at in the hobby", which will explain some of it. Some people won't be as far along as you are, and click away because they can't quite keep up. Others will be more experienced than you are, and find that they're not learning new things from your videos. Then others (such as myself) will find themselves at a similar skill level, but different, and watch to see what can be learned, or commiserate as you learn a few things the hard way and such. Just keep on doing what you're doing and having fun. It's refreshing to see someone in school actually *doing* things, rather than just learning the equations and such. Having the ability and desire to get your hands dirty will get you far in life. (Check out AvE's channel, if you haven't already.)

Just wanted to say sry as I am one a the ppl who skipped through most of parts 1-4 but from middle of 4 I stopped skipping as I noticed something in you. Your right your not a numpty and the work your doing is serious stuff. Am actually now enjoying everything. Yeah I think you could a made it shorter but I am a different kettle of fish entirely. That being said I think most ppl that click on stuff like this must already have the skills and so most would be second nature. Oh and to a start I was thinking what u spent on the materials could of bought you a rusty but solid project with loads of extras and recon most ppl just want to know how you did different parts like chuck n gearing set up. But really nice work , I would never have thought you make the screw feed at the start and pay that much attention to the details. Top job.

I us a tread mill for my disc sander I made as well and it works very good for me when I'm building racing grades tractors for my kids. I like watching u build the metal lathe it's interesting to me. if I had a uses for one I would follow up in your build.

That is what i dreamed to do. but i dont even have drill press to drill 90 degree holes:) but just week ago in metal scrap yard i found lathe.. :)) its russian made learning lathe. with a lot of missing parts but atlest its something:) looking forward for next series. 10:00 ... the solderjob. shrinking tube and less solder (just use a 3th hand to hold the connector) to make it look nicer (and the schrinking tube will fit better, and so protect the wires from shorting or dirt to come in contact) EDIT: Also, great videos man, just catching up. )
Looking great! You should probably run a reduction from the engine to the chuck. It looks like the engine can run really fast but doesn't have a lot of strength, so having a large reduction is going to help a lot.
Great work. Motor torque can be fixed by changing your drive and machine pulleys to several offset sizes. Or use two step pulleys. But it will slow it down. Try a 3 inch drive pulley and a 8 inch. That will give it more bite. Experimenting is experience. Love it.
Well done! I started watching and wondered how this would go, I'm impressed.PS: If I could make a suggestion, I find it handy to have a little dust pan brush next to my pedestal drill to move swarf from around the area I'm drilling. Helps prevent the inevitable time wasted removing swarf from fingers.
Fantastic set of vids. You have some serious talent with the tools, please keep up the great vids. Its nice to see someone that knocks things over and drops stuff as much as I do. I love that grinder and cross slide vise setup, very nice.
Treadmill motor controllers are designed to have a little "give" as it's made to keep you from getting flung off when it starts. I'd say drop a proper dc motor controller on it you'll get much better tourque results. Another scenario is the motor is moving too slow, you might need a bit more speed out of it to get more potential. I'd play with the ratio.

Don't put your self down man, the progress on this and the way you are making what you need done with the tools that you have is not easy, if some one doesn't watch the whole video cause of what your saying is not interested in what you making and doing, this is a lathe video, not some guy speaks about "perfectly how to make a lathe and the dimensions" you doing this and filming as your making it! Just keep doing you man, I'm sure YT is hard but some people like it and some don't. If they don't like it then the obviously don't like the things your doing. I think you are very talented and deserve way more subscribers. Keep it up man!

Who cares if you don't know the name of every single bit of tool, or component, that stuff is almost inconsequential if you are doing stuff for yourself and know what to use and when to use it.
Amazing improvised lathe... Well done! Your approach to precision machine tools reminds me of Royal Nonesuch's approach to precision firearms.... Can't wait to see the lathe in operation ... I am very interested in how rigid and accurate you manage to get it ... And if it's not perfect you will have a lathe to manufacture any refinements.... You have achieved what 99% of all serious DIYer have only fantasised about....

This is the second time I have watched this series. The last one was a few months back. I think you did a great job. Don't concern yourself too much with the negative people. Somebody (I don't remember who it was) once said there should be as much joy in the journey as there is in the destination. That is a point some people miss. I look forward to seeing other builds in the future.
Use adjustable gibs on your slide. It will make your life easier.

I found your channel while watching another. I have worked in industrial maintenance for over 35 years. The picture is my Grand daughter not me Lol. You are doing great ! The people that don't bother to watch the full videos are the ones missing out. You keep doing what your doing ! I have very much enjoyed your Lath videos. I have Subscribed,Liked,Shared and added to my channels playlist. Be proud young Sir you don't care to get dirty and sweat Lord knows the many I tried to train over the years. Yes your videos would be better from a production value perspective, but the content, the process of what you do and how you do it is why most people are watching your videos. Your actions are more important than your words, basically. And what you are doing is very interesting. Thanks for all the time you spent recording and sharing.

Dude, your fine, you prove that a man can accomplish great things with little more than determination, desire, and a need. At your age to spend time building things, and problem solving will carry you far in life. I'm truly impressed, as I too once had more time than money and ventured down this same road and attempted a lathe build. Key word being attempted, mine did not progress as well, and after many attempts, the idea was abandoned. That was a long time before you tube, and I hope more people are influenced by your grit. ---I am impressed by your tool making skill sets. I am from an aviation background and worked with many PE and those with their engineering degrees. I agree with others you are only experiencing the challenge of being self aware as you edit the final product. This is a confidence building exercise but you have really help many who might not otherwise try to duplicate your success here. The examples provided also can be used in other areas of home fabrication of necessary frameworks to make an array of tools. Thank you so much and will finish the whole series. And, yes, you will accomplish much more as you progress. Tool making is a lost art especially in the USA home shop. Kudos and thanks

I watched 100%! I do fast forward a bit through drilling and grinding but make sure to catch the commentary as it's the technical aspects I'm interested in. Glad to see you got a tap holder! lol. I won't lie, the first video of yours I saw I was NOT interested at all...but then I came across the one with the making of the two speed go cart transmission. You've come a long way and the quality of your videos is so much better. When I saw you using your lathe, I thought, "I wonder how hard it would be to make your own lathe". Then I scrolled down, and sure enough, I got my answer. Still have to watch the rest of them, I've been binge watching all morning. Great videos.

I usually watch videos without the sound. Even so, I can understand exactly what you set out to accomplish. For challenged folks like me, purchasing a set of plans from you would be a huge leg up.

I really like your lathe build. You are doing a fantastic job IMO.The amount of knowledge and experience from this build far outweighs any deficiencies the final lathe might have. I consider these sorts of things to be "Works in Progress." They will forever get modified providing the main structure.....The foundation....Is good and sufficient. I think you have that here. Even when it's finished.....If there is slop and it's bolted...Not welded...You can usually shim it. Shims are wonderful.
By the way...The grinder on the stand was brilliant. And....FWIW....The video production is 1000% better than anything I could do.
excellent videos. I watch them from start to finish and often rewatch them. If you get criticism listen read it etc BUT don't take too much notice. Most are armchair critics. They love to criicise but rarely try and make something much less show how they are doing it. I'm 67 enjoy the good comments please don't stop showing your work.

You demonstrate your mech genius for us all to see. Mechanical aptitude is a right brain function . Your 100X better than most people and 'taught me quite a bit in a short time. I'm gonna build that "thing" too one day soon I hope.

don't be so hard on yourself youre making great content, some people will not stay for 25 mins no matter how cool the video is, and if you say 'this thing' a lot just means you'll have something to put on a t-shirt one day, like carsancameras with there 'it'll be fine' or 'for testing purposes only' :P just keep on doing what youre doing and make sure you are enjoying it
I watched the first 25 percent because that's all I had time for bring on break at work, then I got home and watched the rest. I'm really intrigued watching this project keep it going. I understand most of what you explain you're doing next. keep it going I'm eager to see how this turns out. 👍
I know this is an old video and a ton of people already mentioned it, but anyone watching videos like this is here for the content. You do amazing machine work and it's awesome to see someone as young as you building stuff with your hands. Honestly I wouldn't mind more commentary, you repeating yourself doesn't bother me at all.
You never realize how much you say um until you edit your own video! Gets easier though, you start thinking about how you're going to edit while filming, revising as you go. Loving the build so far.
Don't put yourself down. This is going to work. Considering the tools you have at your disposal, your doing well.
I don't have a milling machine but I've found ways of making parts that would normally require one. The fun is in the adapting.
Keep it up. It's going well.
mate ya do good videos, your making a "LATHE" for god sakes how many people can say they have given that a try, you make it easy to follow and don't complicate things. the amount of work, effort and patience you are putting in shows you have more than others that stop watching, their just lazy and cant be bothered. Don't beat yourself up so much, I think you're doing well. Yes, you repeat yourself and have a few things you could improve, but you know what? You learn while you do things. You're doing far better in your videos than the millions (like myself) who haven't even put up one video.
Keep it up, I'm really looking forward to the rest of your build. As regarding people turning away at the 25% mark, I wouldn't worry about it so much. Many people don't have much attention span, and will click away too soon. There's also a wide range of "where people are at in the hobby", which will explain some of it. Some people won't be as far along as you are, and click away because they can't quite keep up. Others will be more experienced than you are, and find that they're not learning new things from your videos. Then others (such as myself) will find themselves at a similar skill level, but different, and watch to see what can be learned, or commiserate as you learn a few things the hard way and such.
Just keep on doing what you're doing and having fun. It's refreshing to see someone in school actually *doing* things, rather than just learning the equations and such. Having the ability and desire to get your hands dirty will get you far in life. (Check out AvE's channel, if you haven't already.)

Just wanted to say sry as I am one a the ppl who skipped through most of parts 1-4 but from middle of 4 I stopped skipping as I noticed something in you. Your right your not a numpty and the work your doing is serious stuff. Am actually now enjoying everything. Yeah I think you could a made it shorter but I am a different kettle of fish entirely. That being said I think most ppl that click on stuff like this must already have the skills and so most would be second nature.
Oh and to a start I was thinking what u spent on the materials could of bought you a rusty but solid project with loads of extras and recon most ppl just want to know how you did different parts like chuck n gearing set up.
But really nice work , I would never have thought you make the screw feed at the start and pay that much attention to the details. Top job.
Hey young man you don't need to apologize the more the better I find your build very inspirational and I'm no spring chicken I have been working with wood for 30 years and would love to do more with metal and your series of vids on this build will help me with mine I will say you could have used aluminum for a bunch of the parts not all and it's much easier to fabricate

I us a tread mill for my disc sander I made as well and it works very good for me when I'm building racing grades tractors for my kids. I like watching u build the metal lathe it's interesting to me. if I had a uses for one I would follow up in your build.

That is what i dreamed to do. but i dont even have drill press to drill 90 degree holes:) but just week ago in metal scrap yard i found lathe.. :)) its russian made learning lathe. with a lot of missing parts but atlest its something:) looking forward for next series. (sorry for my english.) :)
10:00 ... the solderjob. shrinking tube and less solder (just use a 3th hand to hold the connector) to make it look nicer (and the schrinking tube will fit better, and so protect the wires from shorting or dirt to come in contact) EDIT: Also, great videos man, just catching up. )

Looking great! You should probably run a reduction from the engine to the chuck. It looks like the engine can run really fast but doesn't have a lot of strength, so having a large reduction is going to help a lot.
Great work. Motor torque can be fixed by changing your drive and machine pulleys to several offset sizes. Or use two step pulleys. But it will slow it down. Try a 3 inch drive pulley and a 8 inch. That will give it more bite. Experimenting is experience. Love it.

I started watching and wondered how this would go, I'm impressed.PS: If I could make a suggestion, I find it handy to have a little dust pan brush next to my pedestal drill to move swarf from around the area I'm drilling. Helps prevent the inevitable time wasted removing swarf from fingers.

I always watch the whole video! Your entertaining especially it’s on a realistic level not overly high en equipment this is awesome.
Treadmill motor controllers are designed to have a little "give" as it's made to keep you from getting flung off when it starts. I'd say drop a proper dc motor controller on it you'll get much better tourque results. Another scenario is the motor is moving too slow, you might need a bit more speed out of it to get more potential. I'd play with the ratio.

Don't put your self down man, the progress on this and the way you are making what you need done with the tools that you have is not easy, if some one doesn't watch the whole video cause of what your saying is not interested in what you making and doing, this is a lathe video, not some guy speaks about "perfectly how to make a lathe and the dimensions" you doing this and filming as your making it! Just keep doing you man, I'm sure YT is hard but some people like it and some don't. If they don't like it then the obviously don't like the things your doing. I think you are very talented and deserve way more subscribers. Keep it up man!
