  • This is my unboxing, setup and first use review of the Zoleo. A remote communication device using the Iridium Satellite network.
The Zoleo pairs with your smart phone (via an app) and allows you to send location information, text messages and some limited emails (no pictures) via this network.
There is a setup fee and ongoing subscription all covered in the video. Hope you find this helpful

Love that logo and intro, awesome!
The communicator sounds a little too much for me, but to be fair, Sweden has mobile coverage even in the middle of the forest, so obviously it is not aimed for the conditions here, but in the desert where you will be using it, sounds very smart honestly. I can see why you need it. It is a cool little gadget !

Thx for the sub and comment! Yeah the Aussie mobile network boasts they cover 95% of the population. Thing is that means state capital's and major regional cities.
45mins from my house I have no mobile coverage.
Ironically some places in the VIC High country I have better coverage than close to home.
But yes here in Aus, really useful tool, especially if travelling solo to be able to contact friends or recovery companies if required.

Great review and thanks for the shout outs! Pleased you rate it. Mine worked perfectly in the VIC High country over Easter. Stay Safe mate

Thx mate, very happy with it. I think the $8/mth for the breadcrumb features is money well spent and the abiliity to send texts is pretty awesome. Will be using it a bit in May/June on the simpson trip

Thanks for the review. Nice bit of gear but the cost of running a tracker is a little high from me.

I thought about it for that reason, for a long time before taking the plunge. After the initial 3 months you can deactivate and just use when you need to if you want.
I've got a 12 day trip including crossing the simpson coming up where I'll be out of phone range for probably 3-4 days.
Was a big reason I took the plunge now.

Great review mate but do you have to activate the tracking I’m a dirt bike rider and basically just need it to alert emergency services and a family member in case of an emergency as we have had a few accidents lately and one of these units would have come in handy just don’t need the tracking

The tracking is an optional extra. You can use it just as an emergency sattellite communicator. You can message any mobile number using it. Very handy. Also if you're solo and have an accident and need help it's got the SOS button which works similar to an EPIRB.
I've had to use it a couple of times when I've had issues and it's well and truly paid for itself. When you're solo, middle of no where, what would you pay to be able to call for help? If you're taking a break from trips as well you can pause the subscription.

Thanks for the great review, I've been eyeing a Zoleo for a while now. Was a bit uncertain about how the messaging integrates with normal SMS. How does that work?

Thx Matt, for normal texts, haven't used it much but you get a zoleo mobile number and friends can text you on that number if they don't have the app.
You still reply within the app. Hope that helps.
This thing was a life saver on our recent trip where we had a vehicle failure in the middle of the border track. Without it we'd have had no comm's and no ability to get recovered.

Nice reviews, but can it still send txt messages to some cell phones that does not have the zoleo apps installed?

Yes it can. Exactly the feature I've used twice to coordinate recoveries, once on the border track and once in Macallister Gorge at the bottom of burgoynes track.
