Maynard has nothing to do with the music at all. The rest of the band writes the music, and once they are completely finished they give a copy to Maynard who writes and adds lyrics to their music. Maynard has said that he doesn't even play an instrument!!

Maynard writes all the lyrics, after the rest of the band lays down the music tracks
One of the better lines Maynard’s ever written:
    ‘Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
    Desensitized to everything
    What became of subtlety?”
It’s the basis for the entire song

In the 90's maynard would be right there with em helping make musical decisions. It wasnt until the lateralus record he came out and said that its horrible writing with the band. So he decided to let the 3 of them battle it out in the writing process and he would come in after the majority or the song structures were finished. He makes a few slight changes to make his vocals work.

Stinkfist in my opinion is about indulging in anything to the point of oversatuation which causes you to need more and more to feel. Yes Maynard has always wrote all the lyrics. You need to listen to something off the new album, you'll see how much this band has grown. I'd suggest Pneuma. You won't be disappointed and I believe that song will convince you that they are one of the best bands ever. They never included a lyric sheet with any of their music, so people can listen to the music first, and then decipher the lyrics and come to their own conclusion. Keep up the Tool reactions, you soon won't be able to stop listening to them.✌🤘

@@Hollywood6IX I agree with Jeff here. The way how the chorus slowly moves from needing only a finger to needing the whole arm shoulder deep at the end is just a double entendre to how you can basically be oversaturated with anything. Drugs, food, porn, media, internet. You get used to it, bored with it, and need something more and more to satisfy.

Tool lyrics are like taking a degree in pyschology - you can try to interprate or understand but your probably better off just enjoying the experience on your first listen and focus more on the meaning afterwards. These are my interpratations but everyone probably has their own:
Opiate is the unfocused rage of youth. Undertow is dispair and disillusionment. Aenima is the fire and the fury - the wish to destroy and the wish to create/evolve, also to revisit past experience through drugs. Lateralus is delving deeper into the mind and trying to understand. 10000 is pain and reflection and experimentation. Fear Innoculum is the feeling of getting older and knowing your place in the universe. The world has evolved in new ways but you know who you are and what you have to do.

Tool is my 3rd favorite live band...I graduated in 90 and they were the best hard rock band at that time....
      Pearl Jam
      NIN
      TOOL
Only because Tool has toured or been a band in years were NIN and PJ have....NIN is best live act in my opinion (lights, pit, energy, set lenght)
PJ longevity, range, live acts 3.5 hours 33 songs never the same is like Touring with the Dead...
      Still listening 2021.

TOOL Army here, thanks for the shout out, I don't enjoy criticizing anyone, I have been a Tool fan since the 90's and I find them amazing, and I just want everyone to have good, and meaningful experience when listening to this band because they are one of a kind. I left for awhile but Stinkfist brought me back such a headbanger. By the way Stinkfist is a metaphor meaning that humans have become desensitized to what is normal and seek out the extreme. Please check out LATERALUS, this is a very uplifting song and just plain EPIC.

Maynard is 100% responsible for the lyrics and overall vibe the finished track has. The guys build a beast of a song and Maynard finishes it. Also very rarely are tool song names literal. It's an active process of searching, as in use us, we are a shovel, we are the match, we're the blotter of acid, your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve." - Maynard James Keenan

Hey guys, I just recently started watching your reactions to Tool and love them. There is one thing you guys mention occasionally but not give too much attention to and that's Justin Chancellor and his bass lines. I just recently started practicing bass and Tool songs are ones I want to learn most, and damn they are tough especially since I'm a beginner but the rhythms that make them the genius they are is the toughest to follow. If you look at bass tabs for Justin's lines, he is doing a lot. This is my first time I ever posted a comment on anything so excuse if I sound like whatever. But I appreciate you guys and dig your love for Tool. I just thought Justin Chancellor could get a little more love. Thanks guys

One metaphor I heard of for this song is about opening up to one another. Family. Friends. Significant other.
Another one is society as a whole becoming desensitized to many things in life.

You guys should research a video for the album cover for Aenima. The CD came in a lenticular case which meant that it had corrugated plastic that bent the image behind it in stages. As you tilted the case, the image moved, in this case, the white light and the flares coming off it. Inside, the book artwork had more lenticular images that you could refold and put in the front behind the lenticular plastic, such as my favourite, the eye socket with rotating eyeball in it.

Maynard writes his own lyrics, this is why it's so original and has meaning. Not just a vocalist but an artist/lyricist. Adam/Danny/Justin write the music and he writes his lyrics to the music afterwards (at least on the latest album and I believe on the others as well).

You need to check out Ænima (which is the album name), but also a song on the album. Then Third Eye, which is also on this album.
To answer your question on lyrics, yes he does. Only after the music is already written. So, Tool writes all the music (Adam/Daney/Justin), then, and only then, does Maynard throw lyrics to it (once all the songs are completed, musically). Yes, Maynard is not 'officially' part of the band. He just sings for them. Enjoy the ride!

Then the new album everyone seems to recommend Pneuma or Invincible but there are only really 6 tracks on the album and they're all amazing. Good luck :D

The name of the band is what they want their music to be. It is a tool for people to listen to, absorb, and use to better their lives in whatever way they can. Alot of their songs are about self improvement, or about looking within ourselves and seeing ourselves for what we truly are. And sometimes the songs are just about how much some types of people suck, and hopefully you get that you shouldn't act like those people.

@@luisamoa2500 way I see it it's a double meaning. the song is about hypocrisy in general. pissing all over the black kettle, kangaroo (court) done hung the juror, etc. like people can say it's about weed and they're not wrong, neither is @Tristan, it's about both of those and a lot more. many mentions of hanging the innocent with the guilty

@@luisamoa2500 No. That sums up the message of the song just fine. Obviously there's an extra layer with the pot-smoking references and all that, but the above is a fine way to sum up it. Its presumptuous to claim to know "THE" meaning to any Tool song, as Maynard himself has refused to expand upon the meaning of his lyrics, leaving interpretation open for the listener.
That being said, as for "the Pot", my interpretation was a damning statement about the botched governmental reaction to Hurricane Katrina (eyeballs deep in muddy water) and a tongue in cheek explanation of Bush's reelection and why people voted for him ("You must've been high....You must've been SO HIGH!")

So I was going to recommend Sober since I consider it to be along the lines of this song but I seen you already reacted to it. New to the channel obviously but im here. The other song I was going to recommend which already has been suggested in the comments is Pneuma and if you do, just know it's got lots of odd time signatures. It's off the their new album which you might be interested in considering your Tool reactions are of their older stuff, nothing wrong with that (Tool fan here). You'll like Pneuma though I'm sure. Don't forget about Maynard's other bands: A Perfect Circle & Puscifer. Both worth checking out as well and yes Maynard writes the lyrics for all his songs/bands. He is what I consider a Master of his Craft. Good day folks😊
