I had a Krups grinder which had the same electronics and burr set, i removed the burrs and packed them out with this sheets of brass shim material which allowed me to grind a lot finer, it died recently and i replaced it with this De'Longhi KG79 and found from the box it grinds espresso fine enough for my Flair, reading through the comments they must be set differently in the factory
Hey, i made this update, however, after adjustment both grinding blades touches each other. In my setup, 90 degrees were too much, so max was around 45 degrees. Have not tried it yet, hope the result will be better:)
I searched how to clean Delonghi KG89. This video popped up to be the first one. I hope I don’t need to disassemble this machine every time to clean it like this. 😅
Is it possible to do a part 2 video for the clean sound /setting instructions. I was following you up until turning on the machine and click one setting until clean sound.
It is very easy. Just make sure that there is no coffee beans in the grinder. It should be empty. Then, when you turn the knob 180 degrees (to the opposite side of "fine"), you will hear the clean sound. One by one, turn it to the "finer grinding" direction. At one point, the sound will change. Then, move it one click far from that point & hear the clean sound again. That's the finest grinding point. We hope this helps.
Is it okay to turn the gear further than the shown? The finest setting seems still not fine enough...also the static is really bad with this grinder. Is there a way around it? Thanks
@@4ErMedia Hi there. By "far from that point" do you mean to turn it towards the coarser option or finer? I think you meant coarser because if finer, it would generate more noise. Can you please confirm?
Gringing light roasts as fine as the mod will allow needs a lot of torque. Only guessing but I bet Delonghi used a motor not really rated for this and as such this mod will make the grinder burn out faster than without. Otherwise they could sell this with the mod for twice the price.
Hello thanks for this video! I did this hack on my KG79 and I was wondering, after this mod what is the level I should use for a finer coffee? If I use the top FINE option, my machine does not extract any coffee and it starts to work close to MEDIUM option. Can you make a video or send a picture with the FINE LEVEL after the mod?
Hi' You're welcome :) It is explained at the end of our video. You turn the grinder on with no coffee beans in it. Listen to the sound. Click one by one to the finer. When you hear the touching sound, turn one click to the opposite side & make sure that the parts are not touching each other. That is your finest setting & never go finer than this. Cheers!
Awesome! That's saved me a bit of money shame the grinder still isn't 100% consistent but least I have full flavor now! Any hacks to take the cup count down to one?!
thanks for the guide! just modded mine. i have set mine to 45°, as another click, i can hear the blade would touch each other once in a while. during opening the grinder, i saw a chance to bypass the 2 switches for the lid, and the catcher, so that the grinder can run without the lid and/or the catcher. maybe next mod. thanks again.
It was useful to me, thanks for share with us. Inside the grinder I found a lot of coffee, aged ground coffee that obstructs the passage of the new grinding, leaving a completely dry coffee. Is there any way that so much coffee does not accumulate in these models?
thanks for the nice video. The end part confused me a little bit. I don't want to damage the burrs, so how do you recommend getting it to the finest level possible without damaging the grinder?
I am sorry for being confused of your last minute of explanation. Turn the grind knob to the middle position (from the finest position after reassembling) and then turn the machine on, sound should be "clean" and move knob until friction sound heard, then move the knob a click away until the sound clean again. Then that should be the finest setting possibe. Now, does that mean, the real finest grind position not necessarily on exactly the finest marking on the grinder's body? The real finest grind setting knob should be now still on the position before reassamble, right?
Well the mod certainly worked though now it has hi-lighted my machines (EC685) inability to push water through the finer grind and I think I’ve almost had to adjust the grind back to what was the finest anyway🤷♂️
Have you tried switching to an unpressurised basket in the portafilter? I'm about to try this and apparently it transforms the EC685's ability to make good espresso
Thanks for the video, I have a question, why would delonghi design it this way? You really can't do a legit coarse for french press and you can't do a fine espresso or Turkish coffee even though the machine is capable of during a full range. Is it a design flaw or are they trying to get you to buy an expensive machine?
i think it is tied to burr grinder's build quality they adjust it like that so that the burr grinder inside the machine could last longer and as uniform as possible but this is just my assumption without any evidence to back it up
Thank you! I really like your video. Very clear! I had modded mine many years ago with the help of another video. But I guess I didn't turned it far enough. I hope I see the black mark to reset it to the initial position and start again from there. One question If I may... Should I start a bit far from the finest setting and turn the nob one click at a time while its on grinding all the time, or should I turn it once, check that there is no touching sound, turn it off, and then try again. I've always been worried It might affect the machine If I turn the nob while its grinding. Thank you!
Hi. I have a question: at the final step -when you turn on the machine and turn the knob clockwise- you do this with coffee beans or not? Because I cannot hear any friction sound…(90 degrees). Thanks.
I have problems with my KG79. When i want to grind for one cup i would normally dose with 14 g. but when i grind with the smallest possible ammount, it grinds around 20gram... Any ideas, help, explanation?
Hi, I think it is expected. The smallest amount is for 2 cups of coffee. So this is why you get 20 grams of coffee. If you measure 14 grams then you get 14 grams out. I do the same. I am the only one who drinks coffee at home and would be great if it could grind for one cup.
I don't understand if the finest level will damage the grinding parts. I don't want them to touch each other, even at the finest level. Maybe if we move 45° the wheel instead of 90° when disassembling the KG89? PS: I only moved 45°, 4 or 5 clicks. My espresso was ready in 25'' tamping gently, instead of 14'' tamping really hard. Thank you!
I have also Kg 89 model, I also think as you. I want try 45 degree turning. Have you tried it already? I have bottomless portofilter and it holds only 18-19 gr aproximately. Can i get 25 second shot?
I did modify just like this tutorial but at the first shot non cooffe came out. So I had to set half way. Now I did open again and change the mod. I have put half way from the original to this tutorial shows. 45° I mean. I'll try soon if works better. Any idea about ?
@@4ErMedia It worked for me. I didn't do the hack. I just needed how to take it apart to put on a new cable. I was surprised how dirty it as inside with old coffee grounds!
Hi, I have recently purchased this model and I modified it exactly as you perfectly shown in this video , at the moment I received it . Right now it`s mostly suitable for Turkish coffee , but I wanna use for homely Espresso machine. The question is :What if I find my suitable adjustment in some degree between 0 ~90 by try & error? Does this made any side effects and problem for the Grinder machine or uniformity of the result coffee?Thanx in advance
Hi Alireza! There is no problem for the coarser side. But for the fine side, first you should empty the coffee beans and then be sure there is no touching between the grinding parts. Find the finest point & never turn the knob further. That's it :)
Hello, im also using this grinder w finest grind setting but im having problems in extracting espresso using bottomless portafilter in my delonghi dedica. Channeling is too bad and would always spit all over. I wonder if by doing this method and having finer grind would solve this problem. Thanks
Maybe. But you should be very careful. The parts shouldn't touch each other. And still, it may not work, as the "default finest" may be the "real finest" in your grinder :)
Yes, they touch first, if you keep it there. You should turn the knob until you find the right spot where there is no touch & burrs are in the closest position.
Yes. The knob will be pointing somewhere between middle and finest, when tuned to finest. The max. coarsed setting will grind finer than before. So after applying this, you will loose some of the max coarsed grinding mode.
Hi. Tried this already and got the perfect fine grind size. However, I can no longer remove the top part of the grinder but it works just fine. Just worried how will I clean it in the future. Thank you.

when I found your video, there is no information on the blog on how to modify it so that it was fine enough to get an espresso, everyone says they had it well crap 😜 after watching the video I turned 90 degrees made a huge difference but I was still not happy, so I set it back to 180 degrees and now it is perfect 😎😁 Many thanks for such a video congratulations you are great, my grinder has regained new life and the jackdaw is divine hehe
@@LDWilliams Thank you for translation :) Cheers!
Thank you for your feedback!
Hi, how do you know that the blades are touching each other?
@@wongyx3260 when you rotate the top blade manually, it stucks.
I searched how to clean Delonghi KG89. This video popped up to be the first one. I hope I don’t need to disassemble this machine every time to clean it like this. 😅
No. But you can grind finer :)
Thanks a lot, now I can grind fine enough for portafilter :)
You're welcome :)
Worked perfectly. Thank you sir!
You're welcome!
Polecam, działa. Nice work, dude!
Very helpful !! Thanks a lot brother u make my day👍👌
You're welcome :)
I love you man for this .👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers!
Thanks, you also make me notice my removal grinder that hasn't locked properly.
You're welcome...
It works really good
Thanks for this, another 50 quid saved! Delonghi will be coming after you 😂
You are welcome :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH! it's super fine now :') bless you
You're welcome 🍀
thank you, I've tried this hack for turkish style coffee, I think we need more than 90• if it is possible I will try though, thank you
You are welcome!
Is it possible to visually inspect the burrs for damage?
Rodrigo Vazquez You can. But also you should hear the clean sound when the grinder is turned on & empty.
Thanks 👍 very helpful
Hey Delonghi you have something to say? We gave you the money and we have to finish your job?
Gringing light roasts as fine as the mod will allow needs a lot of torque. Only guessing but I bet Delonghi used a motor not really rated for this and as such this mod will make the grinder burn out faster than without. Otherwise they could sell this with the mod for twice the price.
Grazie , dettagliato e ben fatto, complimenti,
Grazie :)
Nice job
ive done this for quite a few times noe. and it has worked. Until now where the stupid grinder is like producing the ULTIMATE inconsistency
Hello! I broke the adjustment arm when I put everything together. I don't know why all the teeth broke. Where can I find a new one?
Thank you for your comment! Cheers!
When i saw the title of this video, I thought: no way I can do it. After I watched the video, I thought: no way I can do it.
It is not hard. Everybody can do it :)
@@4ErMedia thanks for the encouragement. But i'm definitely gonna break it...
that was very helpful tanx🙏🙏🙏
You're welcome 😊
It was useful to me, thanks for share with us.
Inside the grinder I found a lot of coffee, aged ground coffee that obstructs the passage of the new grinding, leaving a completely dry coffee.
Is there any way that so much coffee does not accumulate in these models?
You're welcome! These models are not so good at "keeping it clean" :) There is no way we know to prevent that from happening...
@@4ErMedia That's what I was afraid of, thank you very much for responding and happy new year!
@@T0berius Thank you! Cheers!
@@T0berius And we wish you a happy new year too! :)
thanks for the nice video.
After the modification, the finest setting on the body shouldn't be used. The "clean sound" position will be the new "finest".
awsome took 5min
Many thanx,it did work!!
Hey is your grinder still working fine?
thank you, this was very helpful !
Thank you for your comment!
Well the mod certainly worked though now it has hi-lighted my machines (EC685) inability to push water through the finer grind and I think I’ve almost had to adjust the grind back to what was the finest anyway🤷♂️
Thanks for the info!
Have you tried switching to an unpressurised basket in the portafilter? I'm about to try this and apparently it transforms the EC685's ability to make good espresso
Nice video!i'd like to ask!is the grinder capable for coarser grinding after the mod?for drip coffee for example?
Thank you! After tuning for "finer grinding", you can do "coarser grinding" but the most coarse grinding options will be gone...
Thanks for the video, I have a question, why would delonghi design it this way? You really can't do a legit coarse for french press and you can't do a fine espresso or Turkish coffee even though the machine is capable of during a full range. Is it a design flaw or are they trying to get you to buy an expensive machine?
A good question...
i think it is tied to burr grinder's build quality they adjust it like that so that the burr grinder inside the machine could last longer and as uniform as possible but this is just my assumption without any evidence to back it up
Thank you!
You're welcome! The second one is safer of course. Once you find the spot, you can leave it there & enjoy :) Cheers!
Thx for the video. Its work well
You're welcome...
As its a black burr grinder. Doesn't Setting the disks closer produce more ground in the cup?
Hi. I have a question: at the final step -when you turn on the machine and turn the knob clockwise- you do this with coffee beans or not? Because I cannot hear any friction sound…(90 degrees). Thanks.
Without beans. Cheers!
I have problems with my KG79. When i want to grind for one cup i would normally dose with 14 g. but when i grind with the smallest possible ammount, it grinds around 20gram... Any ideas, help, explanation?
Hi,
I think it is expected. The smallest amount is for 2 cups of coffee. So this is why you get 20 grams of coffee. If you measure 14 grams then you get 14 grams out. I do the same. I am the only one who drinks coffee at home and would be great if it could grind for one cup.
I will try this on my KG89 model it's the same grinder only the color is different I think wish me luck 🙏
Thank you!
It is possible but you have to try (maybe several times) to find that sweet-spot
Hi has anyone tried to make espresso with unpressurized basket with this? Is it fine enough? Thanks
Hi! Can i dial any beans with this mod?
I feel as if I have just watched paint dry in the longest elevator ride of my life......
Lots of videos go fast. People pause and then play in each step. It's tiring. So we wanted o make the video in real-time :)
@@4ErMedia It worked for me. I didn't do the hack. I just needed how to take it apart to put on a new cable. I was surprised how dirty it as inside with old coffee grounds!
I thought this was a refreshing way of showing it.
@@4ErMedia it's the perfect way, I was able to just click play and go through whole process without hitting pause
@@4ErMedia Thanx 4 your quick reply & Special care
@@alirezasaboktakin8506 You are welcome, always!
Спасибо👍
Hello, im also using this grinder w finest grind setting but im having problems in extracting espresso using bottomless portafilter in my delonghi dedica. Channeling is too bad and would always spit all over. I wonder if by doing this method and having finer grind would solve this problem. Thanks
Yes it would. Channeling is caused by either a un-even/coarse grind or bad tamping. Either way, its worth a shot
this hack can work with krups grinder gvx2? i see the mechanical system almost same
Maybe. But you should be very careful. The parts shouldn't touch each other. And still, it may not work, as the "default finest" may be the "real finest" in your grinder :)
Nice video , but when i bring the red dot to where you show (9 o'clock), after assembling two burrs touch each other.
Yes, they touch first, if you keep it there. You should turn the knob until you find the right spot where there is no touch & burrs are in the closest position.
@@4ErMedia so once the sound is clear, we should keep it there? That will be the finest one is it?
@@ahmadamiuddin5035 Yes, exactly...
@@4ErMedia thanks a lot!
Can you tell me if that’s gonna affect the other settings? Lie the coarsed and the medium? Since we’ve changed the teeth..
What happens afterwards?
Yes. The knob will be pointing somewhere between middle and finest, when tuned to finest. The max. coarsed setting will grind finer than before. So after applying this, you will loose some of the max coarsed grinding mode.
Hi, does kg89 need to do the mods?
Hey, The outer shell didn't want to come out. is it normal or should I apply more pressure?
Not sure if this is too late, but simply turn it upside down and push down slightly on the casing as you gently spread the clips away.
are you not able to simply shim those top burr on this grinder?
It is not possible because the mechanism has a stopper inside...
Hi. Tried this already and got the perfect fine grind size. However, I can no longer remove the top part of the grinder but it works just fine. Just worried how will I clean it in the future. Thank you.
You placed the gear on the wrong side. Open it and reinstate the stopper should be pointing fully on the left side
