    The problem with technology is you have to put a stake in the ground at some point, if you wait new tech will always come along, so you either wait forever, of bite the bullet and buy one at the right time.

      The problem with VR is that I keep buying all the damn stakes and I've run out of ground to put them in, some of them were only stake pre-orders that never even got delivered, and some require a super powerful hammer in order to use them.

      that's true of all technology.. NVIDIA are pinning their hopes on Raytracing been huge with the RTX series of cards. Yet as you say it relies on people going out and trying it for themselves.. In other words become guinea pigs for the rest of us..

      @Cure4Living To be fair the same was true when the PS4 and XBone came out... What true next gen games did we really have? Literally none. Not a single one. All of the games were what we have already played, but at ever so slightly better graphics quality. But people (including myself) still brought them within the first weeks/month.
      At least VR is revolutionary. It's something new that we couldn't experience before. I love the VR experiences of the sea and Space! I love Arizona Sunrise. I love Racket Fury (big table tennis fan but don't know anyone else who likes table tennis). There's other full games as well. Maybe you're just not aware of them. There are a LOT of demo type games - more than full releases. But there's also a lot of full releases these days as well now.
      If you're a pc gamer, you'll have a PC that can run VR. It doesn't take much to get satisfactory results. I have an AMD fx8350 GTX 1060 (3GB) and 8GB of Ram and i can play any VR game at high settings. They're not high specs at all.
      For console you need the PS4 Pro, really. The standard PS4 can't do VR good enough.

      Vive pro is stupdly overpriced. With the controllers and base station it's 1400$ you can get a lenovo explorer with the same pixel density and FOV for 400$ That's with all accesories included. The Vive pro probably has better build quality but i don't think it's 1000$ better. I think 600$ would be far more reasonable since they do offer roomscale.

    I'm a professional gamer and VR enthusiast. After over 1,000 hours gaming with my HTC Vive in the 6 months I had it, I finally got my Vive Pro. I have already played over 1200 hours with my Vive Pro. It is absolutely worth every penny and a huge improvement from the base Vive in more than one way. If you love gaming and don't have VR yet, you are in for a treat. Gaming in VR is totally a whole other level of fun and immersion. I know its a lot of money for some people, but there are ways to make it a reality on a budget. Try using "Offer-Up" or Craigslist and get a used Nvidia 1080 ti for a few hundred bucks, since the next gen cards have been released. I recommend pairing a 1080 ti with the Vive Pro so you can max out the settings on any game(not every graphics option applies to VR, so some aren't necessary) and let SteamVR automatically adjust the super-sampling. VR is still a far better experience than gaming on a monitor, but if you're playing in 4k resolution on your monitor or higher, then you really want the Vive Pro for your first HMD, its 2880 x 1600 and VR is in 3D at 90hz refresh rate for 90FPS. The day I can get a higher resolution HMD that is compatible with SteamVR, I will sale my Pro and do it, but till then its awesome.

  • @sonicwingnut

    I got the opportunity to loan a Rift and a Vive over summer from work - I actually brought back the Vive in the end and chose the Oculus. There's a fair few differences but I just found the Vive's focus wasn't great anywhere outside staring directly ahead of you, and I had to modify the foam round the edges in order to get it close enough to my face. The Vive appeared to have a wider FOV but this was negated by being unable to look anywhere except straight ahead without blurring. You could also see the concentric rings in the lenses. The Oculus could also benefit from being closer to my eyes (I dunno I just always seem to get the best image with the lenses practically touching my eyeballs). I preferred the Oculus controllers as they were lighter and more ergonomic. Same for the headset actually as the Vive felt noticeably heavier.
    I'll agree though one of the downsides to the Oculus is setup and they need to resolve the issues with it being so picky about USB ports. Even with a brand new motherboard with USB 3.1 I ended up getting a seperate USB3 PCIE card and even then despite being both PCIE AND powered by an additional internal molex, Oculus software would throw up an error if you tried running all 3 devices off of it.

So, through a semi-panicked search, after piles upon piles of articles talking about how both were good, but basically trying to sell, both. this comment pretty much sold me on it as of it being a relatable one.

    What really appeals to me with the Windows Mixed Reality is the cheap price and extremely simple setup (plug-in and play). Is that not enough for you to warrant a recommendation for that over the Oculus?

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, because the controllers are terrible, the price doesn't include any content, and there's no indication of when haptic support for SteamVR will be added. The setup isn't quite extremely simple: you still need to trace your playspace in an awkward way, you need to buy a bluetooth dongle because it doesn't come with one (I mean, come on, seriously, what a ludicrous oversight), and in my experience I had to keep calibrating it quite often when booting up.
      The tech is promising, but the package Microsoft is offering is just poor at the moment. Perhaps next generation they'll be able to up their game a bit.

    • @TheVillainCity

      @bajinaji 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I have a Windows MR headset.
      The tech is great. Amazing.
      But ... I have to recalibrate often, my movement space keeps getting reset ... loading Steam for Mixed Reality as a layer on top of the WMR software seems to create constant problems.
      I'm a computer scientist ... and it's not me ... the hardware is great, but the software is so immature I actually am planning on buying a Vive for ease of use.
      Don't comfuse the difficulty of positioning the sensors of the Vive with "ease of use". The vive is easy to use (I use my friend's). The software makes the promising mixed reality headsets frustrating atm.

    I've put alot of thought into it, and I've tried both the Oculus, the vive, psvr, and the Samsung Odyssey. Touch choice, but I went with the vive. Oculus doesn't seem like they're going to be supporting much of the rift anymore. The only two reasons why I'd buy a rift are 1) The exclusives and 2) the finger tracking. Revive exist so idc about exclusives and the valve knuckle controllers look amazing. Individual finger tracking! It feels like what the touch controllers should've been. They should be coming out within the first half of 2019 hopefully.

    WMR is getting better in latest Windows updates. Sure it has not everything perfect, like back tracking, but you can deal with it and learn how to use it.
    WMR is good with resolution, has most easy-to-use system (just plug in, and Windows will see it and you're ready. SteamVR support WMR and latest patch has better SteamVR integration.
    Sure Oculus is good choice, but it's still bit double of the price. Not all people can buy it, you need also good pc for it.
    Vive is best of all with best tracking system. Vive Pro looks it's much better, but it has also flaws, it uses same lenses as Vive. And full pack is very expensive. Actually stupid expensive.
    Due used oled in Vive Pro, resolution is almost same as WMR in sharpness and good Screen Door Effect.
    From now, i am happy with WMR. And WMR is also very travelable. Bring it to your friend home and play it. :)

      I own only Oculus and Vive but for me - Oculus is far beyond the Vive. 90% of my time in VR is with Vive. Oculus has worse foam, worse tracking, worse controllers (ergonomically better, but not for longer usage), shorter cable, worse home application, less games, not able to use glasses and from time to time it has problems with itself... simply NO...

      You sir sound like a fanboi. I had the 2 and returned the 2 after 30 days per device. Oculus was good besides the lack of tracking which was not bad. The godrays were worse with the Vive Vs the Rift and the Rift image was by far better. If i had to buy one of the 2 again it would be the Rift. I also hear the godrays with the Vive Pro is way worse then the vive...

      Hoochi Koochi congrats, you have found one problem with HTC vive which is noticeable in some specific situations only (black background with white text for example). Fact than Oculus have gap between nose and hdm which is annoying more than godrays is irrelevant I guess. So, don't call others "fanboi" when you are clearly one of them.. If you want to play games and have fun, Vive is better choice.

      I cant be a fanboi if i did not like the 2 headsets and returned the two for two different reasons. The Vive has worse screen door effect and worse godrays, in general the worst visual experience but does have the best tracking and what not. I was just pointing out how you overhyped the Vive and say its that much better when its not and it made you sound like a Vive fanboi because thats what they say and do on Steam, go figure...
      Also to note, its not just whites, any light colors like yellows and such do it. I watched a lot of movies and TV in VR and it was bad with the Vive Vs the Rift. My 2nd issue is the screen door effect with the 2 so im waiting till they can do better and screen res has nothing to do with it. When a headset can almost remove the screen door effect then that will be the headset ill fanboi over...

    16:22 => A good argument.
    15:55 => How is this compelling, even to you?
    -The Pimax 4k fell quite short of the 3 established VR systems, but the Pi4k was singularly successful among third party entries, remains the best (if not only) viable option for those at the bottom of the IPD range, and still has the best res of any hmd even to this day, which was the mountain they set out to conquer.
    That suggests to me that they are both passionate and competent. It suggests to me that they would be capable of making something good, if only the wind were to blow their way for a while.
    Overnight, the budget they expected to have expanded by millions, and drawing from that pool of new funds they've built the first _next-level_ VR into their HMDs since the advent of 'room-scale'. The difficulties they face with the 5k and 8k aren't the same as those that plagued the 4k, which didn't have one iota of the tech that makes the 8k revolutionary anyway.
    I'm worried that they won't be able to pull it off too, but for more pragmatic reasons. You have to walk before you can run, and the pi4k is neither here nor there.

      Mixed Reality= Vive > Oculous > PSVR > Mobile solutions. My Humble Opinion. In the end the Vive is cost prohibitive and all the extra stuff to buy for Oculous make Windows Mixed Reality the best experience. Vive Pro is a non-starter if the rumored $799 price tag is remotely accurate.

    The tracking things for the Vive aren't just a developer thing, for VR Chat, one of the most popular Steam VR games/ social platform, the leg trackers are very popular for dancing in VR with full body motion. Although the Rift hand controllers are more comfortable, but they are not compatible with the Vive leg trackers. If Oculus comes out with leg trackers then they might beat sales over Vive.

    I went to a VR arcade yesterday where they had both oculus and regular vive. Oculus had less SDE and better FOV. With the Vive the SDE seemed massive and there seemed to be a black ring around my FOV limiting what I could see. It felt like was tunnel visioning into the world.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your FOV experience is contrary to most people's. Was it the same game? Maybe one of the headsets has a thicker facial cushion on, pushing it further away?
      The Vive FOV should be higher, as pixels are spaced further apart, which is why you see more SDE. Rift is more densely packed, for a lower FOV.

      I didn't get to test it out too much honestly. I did the standard demo on the oculus about 10 minutes (fucking mind blowing) then some zombie shooter for about 10 minutes on the vive. The place was booked full so I didn't get the full hour they charged me cheaper accordingly. But I do plan to make a proper appointment and try warthunder since they have that.
      Both were great honestly but I prefer the oculus slightly from my first impression. I was talking about the SDE and that's the first thing you notice on both but then your brain tunes it out.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Samsung Odyssey and Vive PRO have the exact same PPI (pixel per inch). It's the same screen. You said samsung is a "bit higher" resolution than vanilla vive and rift, but it's like the vive pro. Finally, the windows mixed reality headsets are not all the same, there are fov differences and building quality also. Being the best ones the Dell and Samsung models. I think the possibility to use VR without any external sensors is a pro, of course tracking is not perfect but that never became a problem in gaming use in my case.
    Oh, and the resolution difference btw any WindowsMR and Vive/Rift is not marginal, it's a lot better.

      Yep, my mistake on the Odyssey resolution. And we now know Vive Pro is $800 , which is ludicrous. Shame the Samsung isn't available to buy outside of US though.
      I reviewed the Dell Visor - the whole experience was atrocious, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, especially with such appalling controllers. It was functional, but not something I would choose over Rift or Vive. Again, having tried Samsung, can't because they won't give or even sell me one!

    Nice intro to VR as for the Vive it has terrible overheating issues! I've had my original replaced and I'm having the same issue with the replacement, The Oculus FOV is a bit limited but the touch controllers are awesome everyone in the business really needs to check the touch controllers as I find them far better than the vive one's, I've tested a few Steam games on the rift and find the graphics are far better on the vive, as for Pimax I'll wait about 6 months to buy a 5K+ as they say that's the one to go for but I feel I should give them time to sort out any issues that might crop up as it's still very early days yet.

    Vive if you have a big enough room and want an active motion filled experience where you get more of a virtual reality feel where your room is a virtual playground
    Oculus rift if you don’t have the room (or just don’t care to move around consistently) want more of a seated more comfortable experience
    Mixed reality if you want a budget vr experience that is well beyond good enough

    I'm finally going to jump into VR this year, I wanted to wait a year to see where things headed and the full Vive Pro setup looks like it might be a very nice Birthday present to self. I have a very high end PC and my study room is large, my sons have left for University so I won't have any competition for the room or the equipment. I'm even having Inter Occular Lens replacement surgery to both my eyes so that I will have 20/20 vision and won't need glasses anymore, so I won't have to try and wear the VR goggles and glasses which I've heard can be a pain and fogging ect.. So I have everything planned, just gotta wait for the full Vive Pro retail release. This is going to be so much fun! Peace at last! Peace at last! :-D
    One caveat is that I am closely watching the progress of the Pimax 8k. I'm skeptical to but man that FOV would be amazing. I saw one commentator say that the Pimax really made you feel like you were IN the vr environment whilst all the others tended to make you feel like you were looking INTO a VR environment. If the Pimax does end up being viable and the level of manufacturing detail satisfactory then it might get my dollars...although they are being a bit cheeky when in reality it's 4 k for each eye, rather than an actual 8k headset. 2018 is going to be fun either way.

    From what you have said I think the WMR and Oculus are the better buy for most consumers. Vive sounds like its for the die hard vr guys and people with lots of money who want the best VR experience. I think the WMR are for those who lack money or just want to dip their toes into VR.Rift seems like the best option for most VR consumers. It can do everything the others do just as well. Its not to expensive and the most important thing is it has the most comfortable controllers. Which is huge because comfy controller makes longer play sessions easier.Personally I am waiting for Second gen of each to come out before I get into VR. I think 2nd Gen WMR, Oculus, and Vive will be the time to come in. Also they have to have the larger screens which I think will be standard for second gen. Vive pro seems like Gen 1.5.

  • @oocelot3040
    @oocelot3040 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm. There must have been a price cut for the Vive when I bought it in March. Only paid $500 which seemed about what the Rift is going for. Plus it's worth considering that almost all of the Oculus store content is accessible via Revive.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, OG Vive was price cut to $500 with the arrival of the pro. $100 more than the basic Oculus package, though you probably also want to spend $100 extra on the integrated audio headstrap, so it's still about 50% more expensive than the Oculus Rift.
      ReVive is fantastic, but I don't like recommending third party hacks to make stuff work!

I wouldn't call this restricting in any way it just lets me open the game without steam vr open

    *trying to work out what the hell happened at **2:55*
    Thank you for the review, and I would also like to say, do *not* get the PSVR.
    They have TERRIBLE customer support. NO 3rd party equipment that can help with setup (camera wire extensions, mainly). ABISMAL tracking when compared with the Oculus (which I played about with at a friends). The store is very limited on good games, unless you want some arcade style slashers, or a terribly low quality Skyrim. Finally, you *can* and *will* see the pixels... I can count each individiaul pixel on the display, it's that bad.
    And added point would be that the standard 3MM earphone jack on mine loses connection a hell of a lot, and will completely fail to send audio to the left earphone 90% of the time. The microphone will stop picking up, or bug and try using both the camera and (non-existant) headset microphone.
    * to add onto the camera wire extension
    I know this is a limited worry and not everyone would have this, so it's easily something that can be overlooked. But the cable is ridiculously short for most situations. I have to attach my camera to a flexi-grip thing to keep it tracking me because I can't place it ontop of the TV or cabinet. The camera uses a unique connector that you can't buy any (working) extensions for.

      I have to disagree with you. I have contacted the psvr support multiple times and they have always been helpful. Aside from that, the psvr requires a bit of adjustment to get working just right, and that has got to be your problem with Skyrim vr. I course, the psvr can’t compete with pcvr platforms, but for the price I love it. I’ve played the Vive and I still prefer the psvr (for the price). The only thing that sucks about the psvr is it’s lack of full room tracking. As far as the games go, I can find (almost) every game on psvr that I can on steam (pcvr). As far as your headset being disconnected, you probably just have (or had) a faulty jack, as there is absolutely nothing wrong with mine. I love the PSVR and play it almost every day. Then again, your comment is 6 months old and you were probably using the old version of the psvr.

    My decision for the Vive over the others has to do with how Vive seems to have a better software backing (Valve), especially when compared to the Oculus. Oculus, to me and imho, ""FEELS" too constricted, and "closed-source" compared to the Vive. The whole Facebook owning Oculus just has "industry exploitative practices" like EA written all over it, and yet still to come. Just compare how many games (and software/tools) are for free on Steam compared to "Oculus Experience" (July 2018) ~40+ (Steam) vs 12 (OE).
    Also doesn't the Vive have a longer running development cycle than the varying Windows "Mixed Reality" H/S's? Them being pitched as "Mixed Reality" seems too "marketing-scumy" to me.
    I have nothing against any of the other hardware - and I am not fanboying Vive, because for all we know Vive could turn around and become the "EA of VR".
    If I could afford them all, and if I had more time, I would get em all, to test, experiment and teach myself VR development, etc.
    Perhaps, I backed the "Beta Max" of VR, which will become obsolete and end up an obscure Wikipedia page in a year or two, but I'm very glad I got into VR! It is an amazing experience, full of amazing potential and I do recommend everyone at least try it out somewhere if you can - if you haven't already.

    Hey, im in the market for a HMD, specifically for racing and flight sims. I want an HMD that has minimal blur, and with an FOV that is immersive. My doubts about the racing sim is that far-sided vision will be almost impossible to distinguish. For example, if you where in a racing sim, on a fast straight-away, the next corner would be faded into the blur and you wouldn't be able to react quick enough once it finally comes into "focus". Another would be the frustration of not being able to pick out another aircraft in the sky, simply because its too blurry.
    Text resolution isn't that much of a big deal for me, though it would be fun to just jump in VRchat for a bit of a laugh. I do not have access to anything bigger than 5x5m of space, so I don't exactly need an HMD in which the "winning factor" is it's spatial tracking.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rift would be my recommendation for value, but I'd also suggest trying it out somewhere first if you can, as it sounds like you might disappointed by current generation technology. Peripheral vision is bad, and resolution is low. It's more about the immersion than the technical quality of the screen, but that's something that must be experienced to be believed. If you're in the US, the Samsung Odyssey currently has the best resolution, so might be a better option if you want to squeeze the absolutely best quality screen and don't particularly care about the poor controllers.

      Not all games work with ReVive, and many break with each update until support is patched back in again. Controller mapping is rarely ideal. Hi James Brilliant review! Of course I realise your review was before the recent PSVR price drop and the release of the killer PSVR app Wipeout VR . Now that PSVR has dropped in price my feeling are - in order for PSVR to survive Sony must come up with a higher resolution Headset by October or by Christmas the latest 2018.
    Killer app Wipeout PSVR may give Sony some breathing time - I'm absolutely loving Wipeout VR, I think it's by far the best VR experience (in my opinion) out there for the moment, however I would like to know your opinion please; Is it possible with the better screens and coding in development that Sony can come up with a high resolution Headset to work on the PS4 pro by the end of this year?

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Feasible, but I don't think they would segment their market like that by releasing something for Pro model only, and the original PS4 is just woefully underpowered for VR at this point. I suppose PS4 users could see a benefit from a higher resolution screen even without a higher res output going into it, but I think whatever next gen VR thing they're working on will come with a new system entirely.
      Wipeout? I'm properly jealous right now.

    • @mic6133
      @mic6133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to agree with you, I was hoping that the intense VR competition would push Sony into releasing a headset that would work on the PS4 pro but shine on the PS5, but that maybe wishful thinking. If that is the case, I can only see Sony updating with a new console and new VR headset by October 2019! So I think I will have no choice but to compromise with Redout on PC instead of Wipeout and move to Oculus touch for better quality VR. If you know about any Oculus Rift bundles out there with the new Oculus, I'm sure us viewers would be grateful for your advice.
      Thank's for your reply and keep up those great video's :)

  • @richardborys182
    @richardborys182 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review but not sure I agree about WMR. What problem do you have with the controllers? Have you tried Odyssey controllers? They are sleeker. To me, WMR is cheaper, better technology, easier to use, has free-roaming capability... it is the superior headset on the market in almost every aspect. Sure, might have some hurdles, has some Steam issues, but every headset has it's hurdles, there is no perfect headset out there. The fact it's the easiest to use, cheapest, and has tracking about as good as HTC Vive makes me say this is the best HMD on the market currently.
    Also, on wireless tech, you know TPCast is releasing a 2.0 version? Should be much better than the current, they are using some new encoding to allow for 4k resolution streaming. The current one works well most of the time from my experience.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried Odyssey controllers, unfortunately that device isn't even for sale in Europe, which is mind bogglingly stupid. They look a little more ergonomic than the reference design, but the placement of buttons / trackpads etc is still the same, which really annoyed me on the Dell Visor. The fact that's been 6 months since they launched and there's still no support for basic haptic feedback on SteamVR indicates the complete lack of support that Microsoft is offering. Not a chance I'm going to buy games on the UWP store.
      At the same price as Oculus, even for all of the Rift's fault, I'd still choose the Rift.

    • @richardborys182
      @richardborys182 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really should be use dependent. Sure, for an at home setup, if you prefer Oculus Rift controllers/overall experience, go for it. But what about if you are a social person and want to bring your VR headset with you to parties/travel? Then would you recommend WMR for ease of use or would you still recommend lugging the whole rift/vive setup? I did travel with my HTC Vive setup + 1 tripod in my suitcase, it wasn't too bad to travel with, but it was a pain to setup - took a good 1-2hrs each time to setup properly, would much rather prefer WMR with it's plug and play capabilities. If you don't do room-scale setup (which I never do) then it take like 2minutes to setup. Not to mention, when I setup my Vive in the hotel room, the base station cable was a bit too short for the outlet, so when I plugged it in, the cable drag knocked the whole tripod over and smashed my lighthouse against the hard wooden floor, camera face first... surprisingly it still works and doesn't seem to have had any damage to it -- so kudos to HTC Vive on building a tough camera.
      All I am saying, is each headset has its pro's/con's, I think its better to give a review that recommends each headset for each different scenario. Saying that one overall is the best or is bad isn't really useful, it's best to show when/where each headset is the best depending on the situation. I would say WMR is the best, at least for social people who want to travel and bring their VR headset to parties/events -- which is important now to get people to try it out and see why VR is so cool.

      Also, just FYI, I tried a few WMR headsets and I recommend the Dell overall. It just looks/feels great and doesn't have some of the negatives that Odyssey has... + it has a pretty good flip-top allowing you to keep wearing it and seeing everything around you which I think is important for social events or for development -- important for developers to be able to grab that cup of coffee when developing ;P
      Odyssey has several annoying/poorly designed issues which keeps me from recommending it. (no flip-up, can't removed earphones, earphones are badly placed, nose-piece is annoying for comfort, very bad for glasses-users)...

    • @richardborys182
      @richardborys182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And on the controller.... I did notice a kind of majorish issue with them.... the thumbpad wants you to swipe/left-right a lot which I find sometimes difficult because the way you hold the controller makes your thumb naturally want to swipe from top-right to bottom-left, but the way it is programmed is from right to left or vice-versa... so I think they could definitely fix this issue with the design. Other than that, I feel it is a little simpler to use than Oculus controller because it doesn't have random placement of the A/B, X/Y buttons. So, I think it's more intuitive to use, but maybe less comfortable for more experienced users. Plus, I like having a touchpad, something the Oculus Touch doesn't have. So again, pro's/con's.

    I recommend you get an oculus and at that 2nd hand I bought mine for about $300 and totally recommend it the screen is better then HTC it has a better store but the oculus controller is very light this may set you back as the oculus feels like you arby holding it

    • @MakeUseOf

      The screen isn't objectively better; it has a higher perceived resolution due to a lower field of view. Store is definitely easier to use, but that locks you into Oculus until they open it up officially to other headsets. But anyway, I'm glad you're loving it. Great point about the controllers: they just feel a bit insubstantial.

    as far i can tell oculus seams compatible with all games incl anything on steam vr. As long as there is a wire meaningful roomscale is a bit pointless. And the wireless additions are too expensive & heavy. When next gen is wireless and possibly knee / leg tracking then we are talking roomscale done well. After installing on steam vr the app just pops up on oculus home.

    Here’s my opinion, Oculus is the better of the bunch, here’s why.
    The oculus not only has everything the vive does, but very appropriately priced. The oculus can do everything the vive can do and more, i’ll admit, it had a shaky launch but now you can get two cameras, two controllers and the headset for £399, and as he said the vive is £599. I believe the controllers are not only more ergonomic but also better in general because of the ‘finger’ thing it has going on and analog sticks. screw the vive trackpad.
    The oculus is also fully supported on steamVR games, and can now obviously support room-scale games, however also having access not only to vive exclusives, but oculus exclusives too (duh).
    It also has the built in headphones, which the vive does have but at an extra cost, also having used both, the oculus is wayyyy comfier. imo the vive just doesn’t justify the extra price tag, also it has swappable face cushions so you can adjust the fit to whatever tf you want. the oculus is just way better, if you have anything to say that the vive can do that the oculus can’t that doesn’t involve slightly better tracking or maybe if you prefer the vive controllers, hmu id like to hear it

      MakeUseOf while that is true, oculus are focusing a lot more on standalone headsets and i believe whatever the oculus quest will be able to do will blow the wireless vive kit out the window even if it has less graphics, however i still don’t think the wireless vive kit justifies the extra £200/$200, even if the unofficial oculus one costs more, the total is still lower but i guess i see your point

      I'll be buying a Quest day one, but I don't think I'll stop using my Vive, or Rift for that matter. The games selection will be very limited, and graphical fidelity just won't compare. But, we'll see. If it runs RecRoom, I'll be really chuffed ;) I really hope they enable those multiplayer warehouse scale experiences for everyone though, and it doesn't remain a special demo only for their events. I'd love to get 4 quest headsets and have a shootout down the local gym hall!

    Coming here before the end of 2018, and I'm torn between buying Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. Given that Vive is £500 and Oculus is £400, which one would you buy for the best value?
    I've never used VR before but I'm planning to dish out for one of these this month. At the time of recording HTC cost £700 I think so I'm wondering if your opinions have changed. Also just wondering, my PC has GTX 970 but even at minimum would there be any lag? Because I know Oculus has its own performance enhancers to make up for losses (you mentioned SDKs and drivers I think).
    Thanks!

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SteamVR now has very similar tech for low performance machines. HTC support is still abominable compared to Oculus, so you'll be screwed if the Vive does go wrong. Budget wise: I'd go for Rift. For overall quality: I'd choose Vive. When you have a bit more to spend, the Wireless kit is fantastic, but pricey.
      BUUUUUUT, there's also rumors of a new headset made by Valve, which will come with the fabled Knuckles controllers. It's a really tough call right now without knowing what will be released in the next 3 months...
      Sorry, that's not a definite answer I know!

    The VIVE PRO is priced at $799 ....
    .
    You dont need the extra usb card for oculus just one 3.0 and two 2.0 is fine i brought the £30 intack card witch worked ok with everything at 3.0 but once i added cable extension it kept giving me sensor errors + once i hand everything setup via a powered 3.0 hub sensors drop to 2.0 mode (if you run 2 or in my case 3 sensors via a hub they auto drop to 2.0 but i found no difference at all between 3.0 and 2.0 only the HMD needs a 3.0.... i only use 1 of my 4 3.0 ports now so the expensive card was a total wast of money and it doesn't give out as much power as motherboard 3.0 ports + intack drivers are pants without the oculus tool tray app!!!
    .
    You dont need lots hacks for fallout 4 for rift just input emulator then press emulate vive controller and your good to go, the controls take a little getting use to but not a big deal.. There is another program called openvr that gives you access to super-sampling, floor height fix (must have) + bunch of other cool stuff both apps appear on your steamvr bar next to settings there really cool can be accessed while you are playing games witch is really handy.. Ps you must have steamvr beta off as they dont show up otherwise..:-)

      I haven't tried the Vive Pro and refuse to pay the silly money they're asking, but Linus has spouted so much nonsense about VR, I'm afraid I don't trust anything he says. It's more likely an issue with his setup - too high supersampling, or USB bandwidth etc.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't really speak to personal experience of the Samsung headset as it's not available to buy here, but I've heard the full gamut of opinions about it from people who love it, or have returned it. The whole Mixed Reality ecosystem just doesn't appeal to me, and I really hated the controllers on the Dell Visor (the Samsung ones are a more ergonomic version of those, essentially). The controller tracking was meh - didn't matter most of the time though.
      Why did you return the Vive? At $500 now, it's a pretty good price point for larger rooms, but you'd probably want the $100 headstrap too. Oculus is cheapest, and I've had no tracking issues lately. I still prefer the Vive wands though.
      Will you be taking it out often to demo it? If so, Samsung might be better as the Mixed Reality setup for tracking is a lot simpler than unreliable USB cameras.

      Vive is the only "native" SteamVR device at the moment, but Oculus has strong support too, and you'd want to support that eventually anyway given it's about the same user share as Vive. I'd just stay away from Microsoft Mixed Reality devices, as they seem to be constantly breaking SteamVR support.

    Turns out now Vive and Oculus are being superseded by these newer WMR set-ups. WMR even when this was released included Steam, maybe he was unaware. Even though it is still early on it would appear WMR will be the default method for the clear majority. Oculus and Vive developers are already looking at changing to, or at least adding to their line up which will accommodate WMR. Inside out tracking is also in its early stages. Remember what Oculus and Vive was like at 1st?! Inside out tracking is the most ridiculed part of the WMR headsets. Ironically it is the inside out tracking that is making these WMR headsets more popular (especially as it improves). Interesting that Vive Pro have already are installed forward cameras like WMR. Price, convenience and a semi-open platform is the key to WMR success. Microsoft is winning here as the marketing model mimics Windows operating system sales type. All be it with a more niche market (at this stage). Oculus Rift and HTC Vive know they have to change or lose their share of the market quickly. WMR will mean Oculus and Vive will only improve also just like the other brands all be it without to much external stands around the room. A centred operating system with many hardware choices (like PC's) is not a bad way to go. It will bring MR and AR much closer to mainstream.

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      WMR headsets have been out for a year now, and account for 6% of Steam VR usage. The Microsoft store is devoid of anything even remotely compelling. The controllers are best described as absolutely rubbish. I'm not sure what gives you the impression that WMR is winning anything. They remain a budget but unsatisfactory experience. Good for demoing due to the lack of setup, but a poor choice for the home enthusiast.
      I agree, the inside out tracking is compelling, but that's the only aspect of them that's good. Perhaps in a year we'll see something more competitive from the WMR manufacturing partners, or Oculus will have released their own inside-outside tracking system headset (the first of which is codenamed Santa Cruz, and will be a standalone headset like a very high end mobile). No doubt Oculus will ditch their webcam based tracking system for gen 2, but they still have a far more evolved ecosystem than Microsoft. The SteamVR Lighthous tracking system will remain for a long time as the best way to track multiple headsets and multiple objects in a large environment.

    • @captaincrash12
      @captaincrash12 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You actually described what is going to happen anyway. WMR is the likely (yes) winner in the industry and Oculus and HTC are following suit already. Vive is already on microsoft WMR web sites. If you believe Oculus and Vive will do it on their own good luck to you. WMR will make Oculus and Vive better units in the long run. They are joining the team. And by calling current WMR units rubbish is the best example of your complete bias. I call you rubbish instead. You are backing a piece of hardware with a personal passion. That is completely stupid. Get back to me when WMR is dead and Oculus and Vive have it on their own. I'll be about.

There is no reason for 4k either but that is a whole other gimmick in itself - the regular current Vive system is the best as it is for 99% of users and for gaming - stick with the great bargain.

    • @richm1460
      @richm1460 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Camelcamelcamel says it had dropped to $349 in Aug and in the previous holiday season. The only way I can see them being able to continue to sell the Rift at $399 when the Quest comes out at $399 being fully self contained is if it has a newer better display with no screen door, and/or wireless headset. Otherwise there is nothing to really give anyone reason to pay the higher price against the quest. The competition is also lowering prices. The Samsung Odyssy + is now selling on Amazon at $399 and has a beyond superior display. I think competition will start driving the price down, even competition from the Quest. Vive is not lowering it's price and I think it will hurt sales for them especially right now during blackfriday/Christmas. Right now Rift is having a last big push to get Christmas sales because this will be the last time it will hold an advantage over the new up and coming competition. Only deep discounts will allow sales in the future. I could be wrong.

      That doesn't have individual USB controllers though, so it's all coming from a single lane - it;s just like an external hub, really. If you try to run everything off that, you'll have bandwidth issues. The reason decent cards are expensive is that each port offers it's own lane, it's own controller, so each has separate bandwidth.
      That's not to say you'll necessarily have issues, but you might. If you just an extra port, using one of those 7 is fine.
