    Creating internal corners with mitred edges is problematic because if the mitre is cut slightly inaccurately or the walls aren't completely square, your mitre won't fit.
    So this is a time honoured, traditional way to create an internal corner. All you need is a coping saw and a little bit of practice! Good luck and let me know how you get on!

    Lovely job. Was always told to scribe internal corners and mitre external, just makes sense! However sometimes you can get away with mitred internals! Also what I do is cut a 45 degree mitre and use the shadow outline to cut out the waste, little quicker. I think I have the same coping saw as you I am always cursing it but never get round to buying a new one lol

    Nice vid. I had to do a bedroom bay with 30 degree angles which proved tricky, I ended up using a small angle grinder with a flap disc instead of the coping saw. It gave a much better edge and detailing and also it allowed me to easily cut back behind the board to give a shallow angle so the edge was still good for the awkward angles of the bay :) Basically I did an initial 45 degree cut to get the edge and then angled the flap disc from behind the board and up to the edges but with a 20 degree back cut. Also for the flat cut at the bottom before the detailing I simply used the disc and effectively cut/sanded back to the edge and then angled the disc to finish that bit with the angled cut back behind the board, simple and a perfect straight line.

    Enjoying this video. I can now see the point of scribing.
    Everywhere I see you should scribe not mitre internal corners. But does this depend how skilled you are. I have seen the same person do a mix and tbh I think the scribed ones don't really look the best, while the mitred ones look neater.
    Also if you were putting up a new internal wall where there was already skirting (or dado etc) where would you cut the existing skirting before you scribed in the new piece? At the point it reached the new wall or have it go through "into" the new wall? Just trying to understand strategies as this isn't something i have thought about before.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trouble is if you mitre the internal corner it might look neat initially assuming you've got a perfect 90 degrees corner but can quickly look awful as the wood warps and a gap opens up. Mitre external corners scribe internal. Not sure what you mean with your other question. It doesn't matter which side you run into the corner.

    Question about measuring to cut the mitre. Do you need to measure and mark the exact length of skirting or do you need to go further to take in to account the mitre cut?

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about on an external corner, as my scribed, internal corners don't have mitres? On the external corners, I tend to mark a line where the skirting ends on the wall, and then draw a mitred 45 degree angle from that point out, and then make the cut.

    why not just cut a 45° angle then follow the edge much easier than trying to draw around the skirting.apart from going the long way round good tut for first timers

      You are 100% right but sometimes it's not working
      Like you trying to saying

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      john19799 isn't entirely right in my opinion. There are two good reasons why you scribe rather than cut a 45 degree angle. 1) It's actually really hard for your average DIYer to cut a perfect 45 degree angle - both in terms of the angle itself, but also keeping it true all the way down the plank - and this can be further complicated if the plank is a bit warped; 2) if your walls aren't exactly 90 degrees, then you will end up with a gap. You will also end up with a gap if you don't get a perfect cut as described in 1) above. So all in all, the scribing technique is a more reliable way to do this.
      I think your point Faisal that it's not working sometimes demonstrates what I say :)

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And that's precisely my point John! If your cuts aren't precise, or if your walls aren't 90 degrees, then your method leaves an unsightly gap. Unless you have a chop saw (which most DIYers don't), it's really hard to produce a perfect 45 degree cut, and this can be made worse if the timber is slightly warped. With the scribing method you don't get this problem.
      Thanks for getting involved though - always good to have these discussions!

    Hey charlie. A slightly quicker way. Cut the internal corner base board or skirting board on a 45. Cope out where there 45 cut meets the end grain on the skirting or baseboard then fix. Its abit quicker than having to scribe the same shape from another piece of baseboard or skirting. Little trick 🙂

    After years of scribing internals I’ve opted no longer to do this (evening though I enjoy the making the perfect scribe), I’ve reverted back to using mitres using an angle finder which I can then convert to the chop saw, I also use PU glue and pin them now, just find this method much quicker and more efficient non gaps after periods of time.

    Watched numerous of these as my first attempts scribing the skirting wasn't sitting on the floor so the top profile needs cutting back I can see hes done it in the first part of the video as when he offers the skirting up can see the corner top is cut off and it fits perfect. Please explain this.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is Dave, you should always scribe from the bottom, clearly, but no two skirtings are exactly the same, so sometimes I needed to plane a few slithers off the top, to get them to line up (at least I imagine that's what I did - can't remember, to be honest).

      @@CharlieDIYte thanks Charlie. I did my entire last house is chamfered skirting and its only recently helping others ive noticied I need to get a bit off the top. Thanks for clarifying tho I thought I was going mad! I've noticed square top skirting profiles such as torus scribe the best as you can cut the 45, do the scribe and then at the top as if looking at skirting from birds eye view cut it back to 90 for that nice corner 😀

      Thanks Alun. Have you seen the more comprehensive version th-cam.com/video/qhe3Waq6Ac4/w-d-xo.html. On external corners you can either mitre them with a chop saw if you have one, or with a mitre box - which you can make yourself as I explain in this vid. Get yourself some mitre bond which is a great way to bond them in position very quickly. If you don't get it completely right funny worry, you can always fill with 2 part wide filler.

    This is probably the hardest and slowest way to cut internal skirting scribes, might work on these simple skirting boards but try it on a really intricate molding!
    And that's not an adjustable square - it's a bevel. A better tool to use than a bevel is a compass, so your internal scribes are perfect even if the boards are cupped (not flat)
    Cut the top part of the skirting at 45 degrees, then use the compass to mark the flat section.

    Does this method work on chamfered skirting?

  • @hni7458
    @hni7458 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem Charlie: it's trickier than it might seem. Like vid shows, one has to put in quite some extra work. I've put in one day's initial effort now and come to the conclusion that - for my up-coming baseboard work, and after quite some failures with a Bahco coping saw etc - I'm going for an electric jig saw with a thin saw blade. But it's definitely easier to skip mitreing on the inside corner, as you say. It's more forgiving, as long as one carries out the profiling/scribing right.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does take a bit of practice. The jigsaw will help, but even on jigsaws that blade can wander. Thanks for the comment. 👍

      @brianwild4640 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CharlieDIYte cut the piece you want to scribe at 45ish not important the angle then cut the straight line part of the skirt with a straight cut saw and cut the curves with a fretsaw as normal. also you can mark the front of the 45 cut with a pencil to help you see you are cutting perfect. if you need more I can send you a picture

    • @stevehallam6495
      @stevehallam6495 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianwild4640 your method means every cut you do is a trip to the saw just to cut an irrelevant 45. Make yourself a left and right hand scribe as a pattern you will find you have marked and cut your finished scribe before you could even get the 45 cut.

  • @stevehallam6495
    @stevehallam6495 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    there are lots of comments suggesting cutting a 45 on the end of every length and then using this to cut to as the scribe. This method is not efficient and means many more extra cuts and trips to the saw than you actually need to do. Just make yourself a left and right hand scribe on a short piece of skirting then place this pattern to draw the shape of the scribe. In a big house with lots of scribes this is gonna save you a lot of time

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve thanks so much for this. Yes I've had a lot of people suggesting the 45 degree cut and if I'm honest, whilst intrigued, I can't totally visualise it but I guess once I've experimented, it will be obvious. I think I probably need to do a definitive video on this putting it to bed once and for all.

  • @mrdealx
    @mrdealx ปีที่แล้ว

    This is certainly different..I’ve watched countless videos on how to do this and all say you have to first cut a 45 degree angle on the board and then back cut ect…but you can do it with straight cuts?…why would anyone bother with all the extra work if this Does the job the same way?..good video by the way.
