I talk about my first moose hunt after having lived in Sweden for almost 1,5 years. I've gotten my license and joined the local hunting team and after having gone hunting together for 8 days, I wanted to share what it was like. I might update you after the moose hunt is wrapped up, depending on if that seems interesting.
New woodstove, gun calibration, winter prep and much more. Living in Sweden VLOG 12.
It's been a while since the last vlog and there were lots of smaller events and a few big ones i.e. optic fiber is finally happening, using a laser bullet to calibrate the gun, selling the snow blower and placing poles by the road. I've tried my best to catch you up on all that's happened and currently the moose hunt is in full swing so keep an eye out for a video about that!
Q&A: Living in Sweden: Income, Moving, buying a house, gun license etc.

I've tried to answer some of the most frequently asked questions in the comments of previous videos. If I ramble on a bit too much or for some other reason you'd like to skip ahead, you can use the chapters in the video. The FAQ's I'm answering are: 1. How do you make a living? Surely you can't just spend all your time renovating? At some point you need to work to make an income. I also go into...

Nice to follow along with your journey. We've also moved from the Netherlands to Sweden 2 months ago and things really are an adventure. It has helped us a lot to make a list of all the things we've done already otherwise it just feels like an endless list of things still to do and not making any progress, but everyday there is progress and learning new things :) Keep up the good work!
Fascinating following your journey!
I bet you could find a local machinist guy to make you new blades and offset the bolt holes to attach on an angle. Even if that won't work, he might be cheaper.
I'd say it's a design flaw on the wood chipper, that the blades come straight down on the wood. The blades should really slice on an angle. That would make the chipper much more powerful.
Nothing strange about eating tounge, ox cheeks, oxtail, pigs feet, heart etc. I might not eat all of those things but It shows respect to the animal to not waste parts of it that is good food. And at 27:55 that looks amazing :) At first I thought this was from last year because of the snow but you must live much further north than Stockholm :D
Love your vids! always great fun to watch :D
🎉❤
I'd love to do the same thing, but a big worry is how to make money up there. Even in IT, work from home opportunities are diminishing a lot lately 😭
Understandable. There is off course plenty of work in Sweden too but where we live the houses are very affordable because there's just no work to be had. Se we're lucky that Nathalie could take her remote job from the Netherlands and continue from here. However, if you buy a house with no/low mortgage, you may not need your IT job and could do some other work that IS available locally...?
@@Toms_Sweden Good point. That may also be a fun idea for a video; What daily life is like for locals in a rural area.
How do you find out where the hunting areas are ? I can imagine it’s very nice to own a house inside the hunting area.
I'm not really sure actually, but when looking at houses you can ask the realtor if there are hunting rights that come with the land.
@@Toms_Sweden so you can shoot there if the hunting area is on land you own but what about land you don’t own but is still in the hunting area ? Do you have to ask permission like the uk? Or is it more like Canada where they have set areas of land you can freely roam/hunt on
@kyleianson7234 if its not your land you can ask permission and usually pay a small fee. For us this is done through the hunting team. These teams operate like small businesses and have contact with government and involved parties. In our area there's a big logging company as the only party we pay to be able to hunt on their land since they own most of it.
@@Toms_Sweden awesome thanks for the info.
Filipstad also known as Fliptown haha
Regarding not handing out your location. As I see you've changed the channel name which helps, but remember that if the registration number on any of your vehicles (car, motorcycle, trailer etc.) is shown in a video your name and rough location can be looked up incredibly easily. Then that information can of course be used to find your exact address super fast.
I drive in to Filipstad then i drive to Bergsäng and then Ekshärad and than to Torsby :))
Nice that u2 are in Värmland , i have also a place in Torsby in the big wild :))
Velkommen til Sverige. Finally a normal Video about living in Scandinavia, thanks for sharing it, so cool you got all the needed equipment for gathering wood and taking care about the house and property. Was interesting to see that the Swedish house looks the same like mine in Northern Norway i bet its the same building style maybe? Best regards from the far North of Norway.
Loving your adventures moving to a new country! Am a Swede myself but find it fascinating seeing anyone wanting to move to the north of our country. I think it is cold enough in Götaland and wouldn't want to live further than that!😂
We usually soak the liver in milk to draw out the excess blood
why don't get some goats to chew the grass down instead of moving it?
I can imagine that it is nice to be part of the local community in this way. In this way your Swedish will also improve quickly I think. Good hunting for the rest of the season. I look forward to a new video and hope your channel continues to grow.
I have lived in the north of Sweden all my life, and my father and oldest brother have hunted moose for many years... but I still had no idea about many of the rules you named. Guess I was not that interested, as it was simply a part of how things were. And I had no interest myself of sitting in the woods, getting bitten by mosquitoes, for hours on end.
Im pretty sure you are allowed to hunt moose by yourself unless the changed something recently.
I can't quickly find where it is written so you may be right. I do believe that's what we were taught in the course though. It may be different for the short period of calf hunt vs. the hunt from oktober onwards or if you're hunting on your own land vs. somelse's land with their permission.
@@Toms_Sweden You are allowed to "pyrscha" moose! Usually moose is reserved for drevjakt though, especially if you are in an "älgvårdsområse".
@@Toms_Sweden You are allowed to, but you're going to either need to own your own land and jakträtt, or lease the jakträtt from someone else. Generally speaking, very few people lease hunting rights on their own, it's almost always leased to a "jaktlag". You also don't need to have a dog on-site, but you need to have quick access to one if you do wound an animal. Within 2 hours is the regulation.
I hunt myself but in the North where we start at 1 Sep. Neat to see that people hunt in the same way up here, as in the South. The adrenalinefrom getting ready from just listening to the radio is quite adictive, same as when you get your first moose.

I strongly recommend you hire someone to plow the driveway (with tractor). Only costs say 5000-7000 SEK per year usually and it saves you so much time if you have a very large driveway like yours. Also, for carrying wood I recommend using "banankartonger" (banana boxes) which you can get for free at your local grocery store. Fill them up with wood outside, take them inside and stack a couple of boxes beside the fireplace/stove. You don't need to dry them more than they are already dried.
I'm very curious on how much this have set you back by this point? Including the price of the house and area.
Inspiring
Ya'll seem to live the good life out there! I believe me and the wife live quite close to where you are; this area of Sweden is such a gem :) Cheers and keep up these great vids, mate!
Leuke vlog weer!
Bravo!
Thanks for sharing, really nicely edited video great story telling ! Out of curiosity if it’s not too secret how much was the stove replacement? Stove and chimney work including ?
@@blue-tb6uv It's not a secret but not all the bills are in yet. The stove is a wamsler k158 so you can look it up, I think the purchase cost was around sek 60.000 and probably about the same again for all the work and materials for the chimney upgrade etc. So yeah, not cheap.
@@Toms_Sweden thanks for sharing great to get an idea how much pleasure like that roughly costs :) Money well spent by the looks of it !
Advice not to vice the gun when adjusting the gun, the aim is to adjust the sight for the human input also. So you actually hit the target with your human input in it, the trick then is to shoot every time the same way.
Skitjakt på dig!
Moron
^ Before some English speakers wonder as the translation of "Skitjakt" (Shitty hunting) can be confusing: It's said to bring bad luck to wish someone success/good luck for hunting (fishing also) - so people wish each other "failure" instead, which is said to bring luck. It's basically a saying like the German "Waidmanns Heil".
Bergslagens Energi & Kamin are good. We've been in contact with them and bought some stuff for our old wood stoves we have in our summer house in the Kopparberg area (not far from Filipstad). They are always nice and helpful. Looks like you guys are really starting to get a nice home there now 🙂 And fiber! something we never got at our summer house, they companies who were suppose to pull the fiber to the village pulled out because they thought the work to do it was too expensive.

Hope you like it in sweden and you make an effort to so wee all can have a good life ❤
Low population density there... nice place to sit out the coming storm. And I'm not referring to the weather.

You did an outstanding job so far, keep it up and you will be so happy here in Sweden as you maybe not even imagined you could be.
Near Filipstad, that's near Karlskoga where I live. Tips. Don't miss Högbergsfältet just outside Filipstad. Awesome place. Tips 2. Dont miss Alfred Nobel museum in Karlskoga. Great vid.

Hi Tom! Great video with a lot of useful information. I have follow up question on your experience of getting a personal number. Were you able to get it without any problems while being unemployed in Sweden or it went smoothly because your partner is hired in Sweden? Thanks
@@ojszcz you need to show a contract of employment or enough savings. We had both (yes because a partners income also counts) but you don't HAVE to have a job. Not sure what the amount of savings is that you need but suffice to say you need to prove you can live here for about a year.
