New Mowing Deck Spindle Pulley Stripped? Easy Repair, Here's How! MTD Cub Cadet RZT 50 And Others!

  • This is just a quick "How to" easy fix/repair on a stripped deck spindle pulley. Watch for this on these these import deck spindles. This one is for a Cub Cadet RZT 50 mower made by MTD. The top of the spindle shaft is not threaded all the way down to the top of the spindle pulley. It relies only on those small splines in the stamped steel pulley to keep the pulley connected to the spindle shaft. If these splines strip, which they will if the nut cannot reach the top of the pulley, instead of buying a new replacement, just add a 5/8 (or 16mm) flat washer and a 5/8 (or 16mm) lock washer on top of the pulley so the lock nut/washer combo can make full contact with the spindle pulley and lock it down to the shaft. Easy fix. UPDATE: After chatting with "AMENd" in the comments section below about flat washers and better/stronger repairs, I disassembled some of the old factory spindles I had in the shop for bearing replacements. Some had a flat washer UNDER the pulley, some did not. If the new spindle assembly is missing this flat washer (mine were) you'll need to use the washer from the factory spindle or match up a new flat washer to replace the missing one. I'm not certain but I think the factory units all had these flat washers in place and the aftermarket replacements did not. It's a much stronger repair to have flat washers above and below the pulley to support it. The comment section on these videos can be a gold mine. You guys are sharp and I always appreciate the input and discussion. Thanks!

    This video may not appeal to engine builders and since it's not my normal content, I'm posting this one without notification. Those with a Cub Cadet or other like branded MTD lawn tractors / riding mowers may find it useful. (Especially if you're replacing the mowing deck spindles with the more economic parts.)

    Oh man! Hope the missus wasn’t to terribly upset missing her weekly hobby time!
    😳 the good news is it’s fixed with plenty of time to get .. 😂 some hobby time in twice this week ! 🤗 ✌️🤙

      Ha! Unfortunately this happened to "my" mower, while hers was still going. It took me awhile to fix "mine" while she was still mowing with "hers". (I probably took longer than I should have.) LOL! 😂

    Thank you so much. I wish I watch this before going through two pulleys. Haha

      Keep those original deck spindles too! Some new bearings and you'll have replacements ready to go for next time!

    Nice job Chris, I was thinkin you were gonna get out the welder and weld that bad boy to the shaft!🤣

      @KentuckyFriedFixes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have blobbed some weld but these are "brand new" so they'll need the bearings replaced after about 6 yard mows! 😉

    Why the heck are manufactures not machining these shafts per OEM specs? I put mine together and in one mowing stripped out both the pulley and the spindle shaft spline. Thanks for your video, I’ve got to order another spindle set and pulley and I’ll be sure to add washers to the stack.

      I agree! It's as if they're actually making them to fail. After this deck rebuild, I ordered a box of replacement bearings to rebuild the worn out factory spindles for the next one.

    Cub Cadet AKA Poland I have an old 144 with snow plow 60" deck 3 point hitch I spent way to much money fixing up and keeping going but a diesel Kubota cost more then a house I worked for a international dealer for a few years before it shut down I spent more time working on cub then I did in the tractor shop my hatred grew deep in the cheap made parts and cost to consumers you wouldn't believe the money that place made

      New mowers cost so much now it's hard to believe the prices. I'll stick with my old junk. I use the cheap crappy import parts on mine, turns out most of the factory replacement parts are imports as well. All I really need is a decent spindle housing, and the bearings by the 10 pack. I should probably add in spindle bearing replacement along with the yearly oil/filter change. What a bunch of junk. LOL!

      @@KentuckyFriedFixes they definitely don't make spindle worth a crap anymore most of them don't even have a functional grease cert usually first thing I do is drill and tap a hole and I agree mower prices are nuts every now and then I pick a used one up for dirt cheap fix it and flip it I rewired a newer deere few months back been my main mower this year but after 150 bucks for it and 300 in parts I'll need to use it awhile to recover my money

    My neighbor has an old simplicity mower with a pulley that’s been completely stripped (part #1721666SM). He wants to replace the pulley (shaft is still in good shape), but it’s discontinued and sold out anywhere. Any tips here to try and salvage this pulley and or mower?

    • @KentuckyFriedFixes
      @KentuckyFriedFixes  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think the cheapo Chinese parts will fit the Simplicity mowers. That part number comes back to a Snapper spindle and pulley kit. He may be able to match something up from a Snapper? It's worth a try to add a large washer on top to hold the pulley in place, but it won't work if the pulley slides down over the shaft. On the older mowers it can be a challenge to find rebuild parts. Usually the bearings can be matched up with something but the shaft and pulley are another story. If it was me, I'd considered redrilling the spindle mounting holes in the deck and replace all the deck spindles with something new and cheap from China. (At least those parts are available)

    I was thinking maybe a washer under the pulley to bring it up.

    • @KentuckyFriedFixes
      @KentuckyFriedFixes  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would be a stronger fix. Washers on the top and bottom would support the pulley better. I like the way you think! So far, mine is still working with the one flat and one lock washer, but on the next one I will definitely try your suggestion. (I guess it kinda depends if the hole in the washer matches up good enough with the shaft, I didn't think to try it.)

      I disassembled the old factory spindles and they definitely had a flat washer under the pulley. The new Chinesium parts do not include that flat washer. You were spot on about the washer. Thank you Sir! I've added that information to the description.

    It looks like you have the wrong nut. The proper nut has a void space that allows the nut to fully contact the pulley. The void space slides over the jack shaft serrations without contacting them. The nut you are using looks like it is threaded all the way to the bottom of the nut and has no void space to slide over jack the shaft serrations.

      Hi Mark! The spindle nuts I used were the ones that came with the new spindle and pulley set. The shaft on the new ones are the issue. After reading your comment, I did go out to the garage and look at a few of the other new spindles and nuts that I have on the shelf. After a quick compare to some of the used original spindles (I save the old stuff to rebuild for later use) The only difference I can see between the new and the old is the spindle shaft is made differently on the new ones. The serrated teeth cut into the shaft for retaining the pulley on the brand new spindles is taller than the factory spindles. The retaining nuts (new and old) appear to be exactly the same on both. I know that all the new spindles I have on hand came from the same seller on the Jungle site as I got them in bulk at discount. I would certainly be interested in purchasing a different style retaining nut style as you described, that very well would solve the issue in itself! Do you have a part # for those? I'd be happy to share this information in an upcoming video! Great stuff! Thanks Mark!

      Hi Mark! I found that these spindles use a flat washer under the pulley that was not included with the new ones. That may be why the shaft is taller than the ones I removed. It's been a learning experience to say the least. I've disassembled factory spindles and aftermarket replacement spindles. I believe the longer shaft spindles do require a flat washer under the pulley to take up the difference. Not all the spindles I disassembled had that flat washer though. Thanks!
