The manga version of this is even more painful, as after Link realizes what waking the Wind Fish would do to Koholint, he insists on leaving the island immediately, and inviting Marin to join him in doing so. He gets a boat, loads it with supplies, sets out with Marin and mans the oars, determinedly paddling away from Koholint...
...and goes nowhere. He rows for hours on end, but Koholint always looms on the horizon. Marin eventually has to stop Link from rowing, his hands bloody and blistered, and get him to admit there really is only one way for him off of Koholint... and one way for him alone.
And then you have to think... will you wake the fish to release him and free yourself or... stay there with Marin and the others... and maybe... just maybe... still have a nice life... your own happy ending.... But our friend is a hero and so he does what a hero would do... maybe not the right thing for himself... but for the windfish... because that is what heroes do... help others in the time of need

I don't know who's read the percy jackson books, but there is a scene in the books were Jackson ends up in a place where he meets (I think her name was Pleione) and he has to make a decision to spend eternity with her or head back to the real world and never be able to return, and have her suffer alone. That's what Link's Awakening reminds me of, that heartbreaking choice were you want to have both, but can only choose the choice that's right.
@@Gnowimaster He can't have a nice life as long as Nightmares wreck havoc on the Island. Koholint is full of dangers and enemies as a result. It's also mentioned in one of the dungeons that if Wind fish sleeps too long - the hero dies.
In the manga, link actually quits and stops trying to wake the wind fish. He was ready to settle with Marin. However he is forced to continue. I’d be so bitter if I were that version of him.

@@willbentley8856 That's the point, he was still in the sea, sleeping (or unconscious), he was never part of the Wind Fish's dream and thus he would not "vanish" like the rest of the island.

Then again come to think of it, this is the nature of all Zelda games, you begin weak, slowly acquiring power and weapons, unlocking new areas, until you beat the game and everything goes back to an idyllic, pacifist setting, thus relinquishing all that you’ve come to accumulate (in Ocarina for instance, it even makes this expressly clear from the intro, you “borrow” the kokhiri sword, you don’t just “take” it...

Kaytalathegreat well this is just it, he messed up, LA isn’t on the way back to hyrule after the most recent timeline, it’s on his way away from it on the way to ages/seasons which are the same link as Alttp and this, so clearly he gets to his next destination

@@VikTimmy No, they changed it when they moved Link's Awakening to after A Link to the Past. That Link is no longer the same Link as in the Oracle games because that Link had never met Zelda, so it can't be the same Link.
This is the only time in entertainment where the "It was all a dream" trope worked.

What if Marin WAS a seagull, who, like Link, was drawn into the Windfish's dream when if flew too close and was pulled into the storm?

@@Soohable The remake strongly implies that this is the case. It shows a seagull flying and then Marin's picture. This also makes sense why she is the only person on the island that feels trapped and wants to leave
@@Dameol The remake does not imply that Marin was a seagull at the beginning of the story. She was another person, who was trapped in Koholint Island years before Link came in, and escaped as a seagull. If you investigate deeply, you will find out why Marin couldn't get off the island by returning as a hylian, rather than a seagull...

So little kid me finally gets through everything, and then this ending happens. Still makes me cry.

I remember when I was a wee lad I would just play the game but I didn't really know what to do so I was always stuck in Mabe village and the Forest. One day, my brain decided to fire a neuron. I sprinkled powder on the raccoon and obtained the key to the first temple. Soon after, I finished the game with tears in my eyes. This was the first complex game I was able to beat. I'm pretty sure it was also the first time I used my brain as a child lol.

This story is just...sheesh I'm literally about to cry
The whole "it was all a dream" trope is so hard to pull off, since nothing mattered as nothing was real.
However, LA exsicutes it brilliantly. Yes it was all a dream, but not Links dream. Which means, to link, everyone and everything he saw was real. His life was in genuine danger, and the wind fish sleeping could cause issues in the real world. Yes it was all a dream, but it was one of the most important dreams Link would ever experience.
But was marin a real person?
You should read the Thomas Covenant series. There arguably isn’t an example of that trope (though the second trilogy basically subverts it entirely) that’s more brilliantly done.

Its the only one of the three Leviathans that has wing-like bones in its back, so yeah, its pretty much certainly the Wind Fish.
Zelda Lore well the part about the deku tree is because I guess the first boss(I don’t remember the nam) was slowly killing him he was like a real tree blessed by the three goddesses

This game hit me so hard, when I got through it as an adult. I think there's a theme here about allowing yourself to let go, in order to progress in life. Sometimes you have to leave a place that you love, let go of a relationship, move on to another job, even though staying where you are is the easy thing. Because if you don't, you can't grow. You won't change. Things may not get worse, but they also don't get any better. The experience is painful, but ultimately liberating. It's a very real, and very bittersweet lesson that everyone learns at some point.
Dude… that’s spot on with how I’ve been interpreting it. This was the first game I recall ever playing when I was maybe 5-6 years old and it’s taken on a whole new meaning in my 30s. Thanks for the comment

Always noticed that the Zelda games with the weird settings (MM,LA,PH,WW) are the ones that are my favorite. :) This was one of my first Zelda games and I'm soooo thankful for it. Can't wait to play this on the Switch. :D

The storm at the very start was likely due to the wind fish being forced to sleep, and have nightmares; after all, that would make sense why there was a volatile storm with the wind fish so nearby. When Levious was infected, the weather reflected his health and mood. It wouldn't be a stretch for this one to work the same way. It's kinda crazy we never got an answer as to who actually forced the wind fish to sleep in the first place (unless one of the Oracle games just happened to answer this, though i doubt it). I can't imagine some scrub moblins being able to do it in. Unless it was something natural however life-threatening parasites infecting it.

When i first played the game years ago i thought: When the fish wakes up, everybody's soul is free...but its bittersweet. the wind fish reminds me of the whale from skyward sword, is it connected?
I think one of the Leviathan skeletons from Breath of the Wild might be the Wind Fish - all three of them are whale skeletons that are found in unusual locations, after all.

The Link's Awakening manga, you have to read it! It really explores the characters and their relationships to Link so much that it's good to have some comparison of that with the game's story.
It also hurts even more when you realize how much Marin actually cared for Link in the manga. I swear they loved each other and it broke both their hearts to have to depart forever.
I mean the Windfish could have at least brought Link back to Hyrule or grant him a wish, it’s not like he just saved it from some dream infesting nightmares or anything 🤷🏻♂️
personally i think link used his wish to give marin (and possibly the islanders) second life as a seagull. and as for taking him back to hyrule i see no other way the oracle games could have taken place since link to the past, awakening, and oracle links are all the same link

@@beanoptodon That's my point; I don't need to, I was privileged enough to play the originals and honestly if they're not going to ever upgrade them to the Breath engine, that's all I'll still ever need from them.
I'm currently playing LTTP for over the tenth time and somehow it still hasn't gotten boring or stale; it never will becasue as long as it's in 2D it had Perfected it's field back in 1992.
Anything in this style is a cash-grab for me so I'd never pick them up

Amélie Barrois it's not the end, and actually mm is a very happy ending game. Can't say the same way abou ocarina though. Link lost his childhood, lost all of his friends and the only person who could understand him, forcing him to go in a quest after her, witch we all know from TP how it ends.
I agree. It has a very sad ending. Other sad endings in Zelda games is when Midna cries with emotion, and breaks the Twilight mirror right when she implied heavily that she loves Link. There is also that big quest ending in Majora's Mask where we see Anju and Kafei reunited and send Link away to safety, claiming they 'Will greet the morning... together'. Just like a true love couple. Not a game's end, but still, that part is haunting.
In additional to the comments by everyone else here, the speech by Fi at the end of Skyword Sword is sad.
This whole theory video misses the quotes from the Owl Statues that give more insight into the whole story.
One for example says that if the wind fish sleeps too long, the hero dies. Another one compares sleep to the ocean, and dreams with waves, both end in a crash.
Also, this quote would have been kinda essential to describe the Windfish:
THE WIND FISH IN NAME ONLY, FOR IT IS NEITHER.

Exactly, Owl statue located at Ancient Ruins says that Link will die if Wind Fish sleeps too long. From this, Link has motivation to get out of the island.
I thought the statue talking about death meant more like he would grow old in the dream and die. Like he could spend his life there (dying irl when he dies in the dream) or wake the wind fish and continue on with his real life. So like I thought it was less about motivating him to continue on with the quest and more of a question about whether its better to live blissfully in a false world or seek the truth even though there'd be no guarantee of happiness.
I love how so many later games reference the lore of LA. Seagulls in WW, the wind deity in SS, etc.

The ending of the game always makes me tear up a bit.
This has made me think about those “ Leviathan” bones in BoTW differently now. Maybe significant, maybe another Easter egg. Links Awakening was such a one off playing it as a kid but those skulls were whale bones for sure...

Sadly nowadays Japanese storytelling in games tries to keep the theme of achievement and loss but they tend to droen in it various other side plots with their own themes... many of which are only alluded to but never fully explored... because aparently that's what Japanese writers think a side plot should be: unfinished.

You weave a damn good yarn, my friend. The way you connect different story bits and lay them out as a cohesive string of events really brings these games to life. Keep up the good work!
I also hope Nintendo keeps up the anime aesthetic for zelda games in the future. For example imagine a Majora's Mask remake with all the cut scenes and major interactions told through this beautiful art style.

That would be really good with the moon crashing and the ending, and potentially the Giants cutscene.

This was so emotional for me - this game was my first ever Zelda game, so that may have added to it, but the way the story is told here is beautiful done, I'm in tears.

Strong enough to carry Link uphill while he was unconscious, friends with most of the monsters and one of the few who could travel without any issue (and only really went with Link to get a date out of him, really), and soooo trolls Link and everyone else during said-date? Yeah, she’s awesome

So it was kinda obvious, however I’m glad they changed the name in the english release, it gives more space for players to think on what’s happening. Such an amazing game.

I love the ethereal sounds and cryptic mumbles of the Sheika Monks in Breath. I think that's the height of 'voice acting'. If something is meant to be weird I guess, keep humans as far away as possible from it

I havent been much of a fan of any Zelda game UNLESS it's the '3D' kind like BOTW, OOT ect....but after binging alot of your videos lately I am very keen to hunt down Wind Waker and now also this one! 11:15 the wind fish said "THOU MAY" but the voice said "thou might" that's an error
And the voice said "come Link" but the text box said "COME, Zeltik". That equals two voicing errors.
Nice video; I quite liked it. The name of the village in Japanese is メーベ (me-be) village, likely meant to be "maybe" slightly obfuscated. Also, Nintendo of America has pronounced it this way and no other way (mayb) in several of their videos as of late.

This is like watching a Foundflix vid but with Zelda instead of a horror movie.
When you find Tarin as a racoon in the mysterious forest. He's clearly have some mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) in his bag. Those mushroom are highly psychoactive. So what is Tarin doing as a "racoon" in the mysterious forest? He's clearly tripping his balls off.
Seriously.
Tarin was based on Mario and the racoon he both mentions and was at the start was a reference to the racoon power up he had in super Mario bros 2 on the snes. Also the mushrooms themselves are a reference in itself being called toadstool

I knew the story and the ending since I was a little child back in the GameBoy era, but watching your video made me cry with a smile like if it was the first time I hear the story. It is simply the way you explain it and how good you do it.
I don't think that was Marin's wish. She already told him about the seagull thing, so why would she keep it a secret. I think the wish was more related to Link.

Similar name, both sing, both bond with Link through music...while Link plays the ocarina. Both people and animals--horses in Malon's case--love her voice. Both teach Link an important song that connects them.
Tarin and Talon are Mario if he were a layabout on drugs or a drunk running a ranch and deliverer of milk. I don't even know what Tarin is to marin, as she calls him by name.

@@AlvinaYunoa The timeline in reality is hastily thrown together crap. Nintendo never really gave it much thought, and the official timelines were made long after the game was released (which is why BotW tries to do away with it all).
However, if you consider that LA was released in 1993, and Ocarina of Time was around 1997, then you can see how it fits. Besides, in an interview around the release of OoT, it was mentioned Malon was deliberately modelled after Marin.

I finished the game last week, but I didnt know about the secret ending! That is so cool and makes the game 10x better haha. It makes you wonder if when you don't finish the game perfect, is the wind fish not powerful enough to grant Marin's wish? Or does he think that I (Link) doesn't care enough so neither should he :p Great job narrating as always, keep up the amazing work!
If each Zelda game was a season of an anime, then Link's Awakening would be the theatrical movie.
Even the Japanese title, "The Island were you see dreams"(夢を見る島), fits the feeling.

I love this game so much and this remake is just wonderfully made. When you're inside the egg in the final chamber before you jump down into the final boss room, don't jump yet and listen for a while. I will give you a spoiler here, don't read on if you haven't tried it yourself yet: You can actually hear the wind fish sing. It was one of the beautiful things they have put into this remake. I'm sad to having played through the game. Once again.

This is why I love youtube and channels like these. Everyone is special and talented in their own way. Some find it that thye like a certain game so much so they talk about the lore, explain easter eggs, secrets, speculations and dive deep into a games mythology. Imagine all the wasted talent we couldnt see because we didn't have internet.

Even though many people are upset with this ending, it actually brought a smile to my face. It teaches us the epistemology of loss and that to not cling onto something you cannot have. In the end it was all a dream and we helped a deity free from his slumber. Even if we wouldn't awaken him, the whole island would be plagued with monsters. Thankfully the wind god fulfilled her dream!

While playing this Zelda, I was thinking also that this is the style they should have used to make Pokemon let's go Pikachu/Eve, and probably Shield/Sword.
