A few years ago Netflix made a prequel series called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and it is phenomenal! Unfortunately, it didn't get as much viewership as they wanted and it was very expensive to make, I'm sure, so they cancelled it after the first season...right after it won an award! ugh, Netflix has issues. Anyway, even though they were not able to continue with the story they were telling in that series, those episodes are SO worth watching!! A lot of the original practical effects people were involved and they had this wonderful blend of puppetry/practical effects and good CGI that made the characters come to life more than they ever could have done in 1982. This movie is one of my favorites from childhood. This and The Neverending Story are solidified in my core memories and I rewatch them often. I'm so glad you're taking the time to experience them. Enjoy!

It was made by the Jim Henson Company for the modern audience, but still features a stellar cast, many of them famous names, great story writing, there's action, adventure, and thrills...and it's all done with puppets! In many Muppet productions, Muppets can be 'remotely' operated by puppeteers via wires, strings and such. The larger ones do contain actors inside. So the question at 10:25 is confirmed that an actor inside is also, by cannon, a 'Muppet'.

I’m echoing the recommendation of Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019). This prequel to the iconic classic film was produced by Lisa Henson, daughter of Jim Henson, who leads The Jim Henson Company. They truly brought their best to the series. Although it was unfortunately canceled after one season due to low viewership, I still highly recommend it. The magic of Jim Henson’s imagination remains intact, and that’s why I cherish this show as much as the original film. You may want to react to it as well and give us your thoughts.

I think my most favorite parts is when Jen and Kiera hold hands and could see the lives of each other. My other favorite scene is the part where Jen holds Kiera close to her as the Crystal Being tells him "Hold her close, she is a part of you, as we all are a part of each other". The film is a magical, empowering, emotional, and spiritual healing experience and it is beautiful to see others, like you, that could watch and appreciate the magic and mastery of his art; that is the Genius of Jim Henson.✨

I've been watching it since I was probably way too young to have first seen it, lol, but that was life in the 80s. It came out when I was 4, I probably watched it for the first time when I was 7 or so. To this day, Henson's world building in this just blows me away. The level of detail in every set, every moment, is just mind boggling. I heard that they originally pitched it to Disney, but Disney was too dark, so they went to Henson. I'm glad they did - he *let* it be dark, where it needed to, and brought out so much richness in the story thereby. There is really nothing like this movie. (caveat: I never watched the show)

I loved this as a kid and as an adult even bought the limited version of the soundtrack. As well as having a book companion to it. I liked that it created a completely other world with no humans to speak of and the music is awesome.
I have since learned there are people who feel it's orientation is too "Eastern" for them. Rather than good and evil in the classic sense the Skeksis and Mystics are maybe a bit more like Yin and Yang. Harmony and wholeness, of a kind, is maybe the goal more than defeat of evil as such.

For my thesis in psychology I used this movie for the fracturing of a traumatized mind and how jen had to journey (irl therapeutically) to get the sum of the whole of you to get repaired and whole again. Your brain is the shattered crystal. Various parts of your personality at odds with yourself. So many kids' 80s films had underlined mental health issues as a topic.

"Krull" 1983 and "Legend" 1986 (Tom Cruise and Tim Curry) are also favorite fantasy movies of mine. Yeah, The Dark Crystal is the truth. It is a wonderful and deep movie. I Most Definitely have this one in my physical collection.
I'll say it again as a Gen X member, 80s kid, 90s teenager and early 2000s adult: These were some of the best of times ever to be alive, for everything.

Just discovered your channel. I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm happy to see you're traveling through 80s sci-fi/fantasy & adventure movies. I've watched your reaction to this and Krull so far. I'd like to recommend (if they haven't been already) "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) and "The Secret of NIMH." (1982). Both movies I grew up watching and loving and still do to this day.

Jon, you should really watch the documentary on how th movie was made. Its amazing. Just looking at the tons of artwork alone, in mind boggling.

Btw, the Gelflings are "muppets".. not people in suits. The onlu time theyte a little person in a suit is when theres a wide angle from far away. All the closups of Gen... Jim Henson is literally right below camera. Also, Ogra is being performed by Oz, but the voice was later dubbed by an actress.. as Frank's voice already too well known. However the behind the scenes feature shows Oz's live voiced version. The Skeksis and Mystics are operated kinda like a hunched over Big Bird.. the operaters hand is moving the head, and is monitoring their movments inside the body with a small analog tv. It got very hot in those things.

I was 8 when this came out! I remember seeing a huge mockup of the Crystal in the theater lobby. It had smoke risding up and everything! Try to find the Making of Documentary! It's really fascinating how they did a lot of the Puppets and Larger Characters! It Definitely broke new ground back then! Jim Henson and Frank Oz were Wizards when they made this!

I always thought I was the only one who loved this movie. When I showed to "friends", they left. Jimmy Henson was a great creator.
    Love it or Leave it.

There's also a flick called Marquis (1989) that, while not by Henson, uses a similar technique. It's a kind of bizarre historical drama slash dark comedy in which the characters are all animals of some kind or other.

This movie was great especially for the time, I was little when it came out, and terrified and fascinated me lol.. First time seeing your channel, fun reaction;) if you want a cool classic fantasy movie to watch ,try Legend with a young tom cruise, one of my favs.

Great film , one of my childhood favorites, still a favorite 😊.
Don't feel bad btw , I think most people are soo lost in the visually enchanting world they created, that most don't see till the reveal , that the two races, dark and light are one.
Now have you ever seen Dragonslayer, if not, it's a must fantasy film watch , possibly one of the best dragons ever created in film.

I had the movie poster for this on my bedroom door for years. Saw it in the theater a couple of times. And in my opinion, the Castle of the Dark Crystal is still the ultimate BBEG lair.

He must react to the series and then for it all to make sense React to DreamFastWithMe videos! The Skeski used to be very good and the series shows just how entrenched they were after they slowly lost their wondrous feathers and coloured scales. The ancestors of the current Gelfling Leaders all once knew the skeski when they were good. A lot of their societal and tech improvements came from them. There’s a lot of history which was all inspired by J.R.R Tolkien. ❤

Excellent reaction the dark crystal with Jim Henson masterpiece he thought labyrinth was but nobody liked it. Well, hardly anybody critics bandit haven’t seen yet, but he wanted to make a sequel for the longest time, but so before Jim Henson, died, he made a partnership with Disney when he died, they took it over lock stock and barrel. His family still has some saying they were, they still have some say but what projects they do for the creature shop the dark Crystal was all his idea he wanted just an adult. He already mastered them Muppets. He wanted to show them. They could do more than just comedy skits. Nothing wrong with that but he knew more and he was right, I think Disney owns so much. I think they forgot their own crystal so much so that a couple years ago on Netflix made a dark crystal series on Netflix thanks for the fun until next time

Jim Henson's daughter was the one behind the Netflix series, She did very well to honor her father's work and memory.
Fact: This was a made up bed time story Jim told his daughter when they missed a flight.
      What an imagination he had.

You can certainly tell Aughra was puppeteered by Frank Oz. Her movements are very much like Miss Piggy.

To answer your question of a person in a suit being a muppet/puppet: They did that with Big Bird and a few other characters on Sesame Street and The Muppet show.
