Growing up in New Jersey in the late 60s and 70s, I remember the body counts every night on the news. And then I saw how the vets were treated when they returned. I asked my dad, a WW2 vet why that was, and he didn't have an answer. Thank you to all the veterans for your service!
I tried the cold water thing a few times, but my skin didn't respond well to it. The shave was very difficult. Its interesting how for different people it works wonders. I am sure cold water is better for the skin though, as it is less irritating but it will depend on how a person responds to the shaving part.
I have thick hair like an AlQuaeda, same, cold water feels great, but too much pulling for me. Get the green Proraso cream, it feels so coold, it almost hurts how amazing it is, even with hot water
You’re right. If you haven’t already, try a milder safety razor, though, and maybe a slicker soap. A budget friendly combo would be a Merkur 23C safety razor and an Arko shaving soap (or stick), and don't hold back on the water for that lather !
Hey Geo. That was an interesting letter you read. I too often shaved with cold water on board the ship while in the Navy. I restarted shaving with cold water after watching one of your videos and continue with it daily. Here in Phoenix it is more like lukewarm in the summertime though. I have applied many of the tips you pass on. When I 1st started shaving I didn’t have all of the luxuries offered now. One razor, and one or two types of soap. Glad things got better. Take care and be safe.
@@righteousredneck777 it really makes the hairs stand up more. If you use Menthol shaving soap or creams it makes the Menthol effect stronger. If you've ever tried Palmolive Menthol Shaving Cream it's like having your face in a freezer lol.

I am a cold water shaver. I take a large glass of ice cubes in the bathroom before every shave. I use separate cups for the razor and brush. I put ice in each cup and pour a few drops on top of the soap. After a warm/ cool shower, I put more ice in the sink and enjoy cold splashes on my face , neck and arms. The shave is great and causes less skin inflammation. I repeat the cold splashes post shave. Give it a try!
I tried shaving with cold water yesterday. It did result in a smoother shave and I had less irritation. I did some online searches on this topic and it seems that it was quite well-known since the 19th century that shaving with cold water results in better shaves. But thank you for bringing this topic up.
Thanks for the tip Geo. Per your tip a month or so ago about tempering the razor in cold water I have stuck to that method like glue and have used cold water with the razor ever since. Now a full blown cold water shave. OK I'll give it a try. Stay cool Geo.
I saw an ad for henson on youtube aswell and immediately baught a henson Ti22 medium. its a fantastic razor, just a little aggressive for my skin as im really sensitive on the neck. but have been slowly figuring out how to get a nick free shave, I tried cold water for the first shave with it and didnt have much luck but after seeing this i'll try it again.
Great tip, have not done a cold water shave since my army days (40+ years ago). But now my skin gets irritated when I "hot shave", so I will try cold now. I guess cold water closes the pores, particularly around the hair follicles, and thus makes the skin less susceptible to damage/nick/irritations. Thanks!
Hello I'm Peter a British army veteran and I really wish I could have know how to shave this well in the army I wouldn't have got in as much trouble if I had very nice to hear about a Vietnam veteran
Well I am as you know from my many mentions a great believer in using Thayers witch hazel as a pre-shave after warming up with tepid water and then finishing off with it again and I am like Sheldon in my mid-seventies with wire whiskers and paper skin. But I still find you need a good quality shave cream like Taylor of Old Bond Street and coupled with a good razor. I currently use a Feather AS-D2 coupled with a King C Gillette blade and find it is a good combo.
Have been shaving with a safety razor for a couple of decades ( a score) and I enjoy it better than cartridge razors.n I have tried a straight razor a few times only to require a blood transfusion each time. I have not given up on the straight razor but my face needs time to recoup. I have purchased a few more safety razors ( open/closed comb and adjustable). Do you have a recommendation as to how I should test (sorry, I am an engineer and like to test) each type of razor along with the numerous blades available?
GEO...can you recommend a shaver or method for getting rid of Nose hair. At times I feel like I have bonsai trees up my nostrils. I have tried many electrics, but wanted to see if you have any input?
The Panasonic shavers where Sheldon's talking about are great products. Used them for 10 years but since a few weeks I'm having fun with Safety Razors. It's trial and error. In house at this moment: Mühle R89 and R41, King C. Gillette Safety Razor and Rockwell 6C. Time to stop buying razors now 😅
@@bostonstrongpatriots8881 I tried a few blades (Mühle blades and King C. Gillette blades) but have the best results with my Feather Blades. I'm curious about Astra but didn't try them.

If I am not wrong, your technique is different. You just warm water to make your lather, wash your face before the shaving, to warm up your razor before the shaving. When you finish, you use cold water to close your pores, and it seems legit to me.
