Something missed in the video is if you use a different interface then br0 for example you put a 10G card in a server with 1G port. You also need to set Key7 or INTERFACE to the same brX value or this will not work. Took awhile to figure that out so hopefully if in same boat this comment will save some time.
This is great! I Set up this docker and it works great! I loved it so much I used the Raspberry Pi B+ I had laying around as a second Pihole. Now my router points to both. This way I am always set regardless of which path is used. If one goes down I am still protected as well. Thanks again for the fantastic videos!
Great info, thanks for posting that. I had to steal the CPU on my unRAID server for my main machine, but I'll definitely be taking advantage of this once it is back on its feet.

I just used this older video and it is still valid. You absolutely need to change the Unraid server's DNS to manual and point at Google DNS servers or something. I was using a DHCP reserved IP to always give my Unraid server the same IP. That uses the router as the DNS Server. For me at least this caused Pihole to not work when manually setting a computer to use Pihole as the DNS Server.

Fantastic video This is a great tool to use. your videos have made a huge difference in the way I use UnRaid
Should point out 1 very important change that should be made to Unraid's DNS settings. I set my Pi-Hole IP at the router level so all devices on the network go through Pi-Hole. This includes the Unraid server. I started noticing some speed issues of the webgui, and then started getting bad speed tests from the Speedtest plugin. But access to my shares was not impacted. Did some digging and found out Unraid is unable to connect to an IP within itself, so it was trying to hit the Pi-Hole as it's DNS and timing out then finally failing over to 1.1.1.1
Everyone should manually set the Unraid DNS setting within Network settings and NOT use PI-Hole as the DNS.
I started using this today and found the same thing. Can totally confirm. Cannot route to the Pi-hole IP address from Unraid server.

Don't know if there is a proper workaround. Honestly if I decide to keep running Pi-hole I should put it on a real independent device, perhaps a raspberry pi running with a PoE hat so it will power itself back on even after a power outage.
John Lomaga Thanks for this. I set up pi-hole yesterday and today all my containers showed updates and when I tried updating them, the couldn’t download any data. And in the case of my Tautulli container it deleted itself when it couldn’t download. Setting unRAID to static DNS resolved the issue.

Do you happen to be running Nextcloud with your setup as well? I setup pihole, after changing the dns that unraid uses, but can't connect to nextcloud after doing so.
Thanks for posting this. I kept trying to install Nextcloud and could not get any new dockers to download and then remember seeing this. Was driving me nuts . I hope there is an eventual fix.
Thanks for this. Added PiHole and it broke ntp (time) AND the Community Applications plugin after rebooting unraid! Learned the hard way that unraid should not be using pihole internally for its DNS.

As always, wonderful video mate! ... before UnRAID 6.4 features were available, you had to change your UnRAID webUI port, so I ended up just creating a simple ubuntu VM and running PiHole on that .... might switch to the docker version and see how it stacks up :)
the ubuntu version is much more flexible

Very good job, I followed your instructions and everything works great, but in the end I installed the ad blocker "Diversion" on my Asus RT-AC56U because sometimes my children websurf late at night and since I like to have the Server off at night to get some rest and that cannot be possible with the Pihole.

Won't your additional blocklist settings be lost on any upgrade, just as your changes to the passthrough DNS servers need to be set on the template instead of within Pi-hole?
As always a fantastic video. As you clearly described and pointed out in your video, you cannot change the configuration of the public DNS servers you use within PiHole. This has to be done through your docker container configuration. However, how do you enable DNSSEC? As soon as I touch the DNSSEC option and click apply it screws the complete installation. Anyone know how we can get this feature enabled please?

Thank you for these informative videos. Do you have a fixed IP? I live in Hawaii and a fixed IP from our providers costs alot as it is only a business plan option, not a consumer level. I have had people try and get this working on my home network and we haven't had success. I am using a Unifi UDM Pro and Unifi Switches and AP's (Which are great). I only recently switched to unRaid and am having all kinds of issues with trying to follow your videos and getting the dockers to work. I have tried to follow the open VPN, PiHole and some Bin-hex Dockers without much success. Do you still use PIA?

Hi thank you for this one :) Though it's weird I can't get my unraid host to use the pihole dns, every computer on my network virtual or physical does, but unraid never register on pihole client list and don't work properly if I don't specify another dns in unraid settings! Is itnormal behaviour?? thx
One thing to watch out for is if your unRaid box is setup using a static DHCP address assigned by your router, go into unRaid network settings and hard code in some DNS servers other than the PiHole IP as unRaid won't be able to hit DNS on the PiHole container.
Unless you have two network ports.
I don't believe your router's going to forward requests because it's not a DNS server. It merely hands out the DNS IP address to its DHCP clients. Whereas the clients themselves have gotten their DNS settings from the router and can then use pihole as their DNS. If your unraid server was a DHCP client of your router or another words had pihole as its DNS then it would work, assuming you had two network ports.
I'm not running Pi hole yet but I am running my DNS server on my same unraid box in a docker.
@steferNB, Have you been able to get unraid to work using your router as the DHCP server? My unraid server has not been able to get out to the internet, even though it shows pi-hole as the dns server...I should check my other dockers to see if they are resolving.
And that's the issue I was talking about. Still let the router do DHCP (hopefully static/reserved DHCP) and just put in your own DNS server IPs like 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9.
I'd like to have network wide DNS resolving, rather than having to point devices to pi-hole. I'll have to try and play with it more tonight. On another note, dockers are still pointing to the router for DNS, which explains why the router is making so many requests. Probably when I restart a docker, then it will update to whatever the unraid server is using.

Thanks for another great tutorial video! Any tips on getting better blockage on TH-cam with this? Works great on every other site I've tested, but it misses a ton of stuff on TH-cam that AdBlock Plus doesn't.
This is a limitation of Pi-hole, and one of the reasons why it isn't necessarily better than adblocking extensions. Pi-hole works at the DNS level, but youtube ads come from the same servers as the videos, so there is no way to do this with Pi-hole. I use Pi-hole in conjunction with uBlock Origin for extremely good results.

PiHole implemented and it's blocking way more then i was expecting. My user in home started complaining in 1 hour as it started blocking pintrest and lot more in facebook.
I just set this up on a Comcast/Xfinity router that doesnt allow you to turn off DHCP or change DNS settings. If you reserve an IP and set your DNS range to only be that IP, the built in dhcp server can't assign devices. This lets PiHole assign everything as it still has range in its DHCP. Its a little awkward, but until I finally decide on some network equipment it will do. (Actually figured this out thanks to a CUJO FAQ when I was googling around)
Hmm..on Unraid 6.6.4 and dont see the 'custom" Network Types in the dropdown, weird. Wonder if something changed?

If you router has the option, set DNS1 to pihole and set DNS2 to 8.8.8.8 (who whoever you like), it should then fail-over to DNS2 if 1 is unavailable

it is down too, so if you can't set an alternative DNS in your router settings your devices wont be able to connect to the internet.
Unless you set in your device settings an alternative dns to the router.
example:
If your Pi Hole (IP 192.168.0.3) is down and you have set in your windows network config the Default DNS the Pi Hole IP (192.168.0.3)
AND an alternative DNS your Router IP (192.168.0.1) or any other DNS (8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, etc.) you will still be able to connect to the internet, because your windows will automatically switch to the alternative DNS.
If you only have set the Default DNS from the Pi Hole IP and no alternative DNS you wont be able to connect to the internet.

Brilliant tut as always. Ive just set this up and Quad 9 is pre-configured in the latest PiHole. Does anyone know what the difference between Quad9 (filtered, DNSSEC) Quad9 (unfiltered, no DNSSEC) Quad9 (filtered + ECS) is? And Cloudfare (which is 1.1.1.1 i think)
I realize you didn't have to change your timezone, but how do you change it if you need to? Is there a standard list of variables to enter? I tried putting my correct timezone in, but I have no idea if the system is respecting the change, or rejecting it because it wasn't formatted in an expected way.
I had the same question. Here's a list of time zones on Wikipedia, use the TZ Database Name: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones
Not sure why but I don't get the option for custom on my docker and can't assign an ip address to it. Only bridged, host, and none are my options. On latest version of unraid too. Suggestions?
I think I must be doing something wrong. I have pfSense running on my unraid server as a VM. I have changed the DNS server to the specific IP of the Pihole docker and it won't work. I've tried fooling around with a few of the settings and nothings seems to change. Any suggestions?
Great video as always. I run the same docker for quite sometime. Overall its stable, but there have been few times when the DNSmasq of pihole crashes, making the whole network internet down. I normally restart the container and then it works again. Any idea why this may happen?

I followed the steps in the video for setting my pi-hole up,
now I have set in my windows network config my pi-hole IP as Default DNS for testing, but i can't connect to the internet (i can ping my pi-hole IP)
Is there any setting i missed or in the unraid server network config i have to check?
Please send me a pm with some screen shots of your settings in unRAID and windows and I will see if I can spot anything.
login to you pi-hole and go to settings and make sure upstream DNS from Google, Open DNS or others is checked if you are trying to access the web outside your network you need at least 1 upstream server but best to set 2

I have a laptop PC running raspberry Jessi with pi hole installed. The hardware has 2 network cards one for the modem and one for the network or router. Problem is I have internet on the system running pi hole but no internet on my router. How I have it set up is eth1 modem with dhcp addressing eth0 router. WAN of router configured with modem ip address and DNS of pi hole. What am I doing wrong?
I found the docker version doesnt work as good as the ones running on my two Ubuntu Servers. First my loaded blocklists from iblocklist dont appear to add to the list of blocked domains leaving the docker one with 122k blocked domains and my ubuntus are at 138k blocked domains. I removed the docker one as it is just as easy to download ubuntu free and run it as a VM on Unraid. you get a lot more flexibility with the ubuntu one as well being able to set up chron jobs to update the gravity blackhole system and set up a local lan list so computers can ping and nslookup hostnames/ips. this option works if you just want to set it and forget it but its not for people who want fine grain control over Pi-Hole as always though thanks again for another great video

If i set the docker's IP on my PC as DNS it works perfectly, but when I set it in the router as DNS server i have no connection to the internet. Any idea what can cause that?

I am trying to set this up but it seems a lot of the interface has changed and I am kind of getting lost. Any chance you could update this as it is a very useful tool? And I know you aren't my persona trouble shooting guy, but I had a warning during the docker install that said something about errors when you use 127.0.0.1 as localhost? That would have to be something in my default settings because I wouldn't know where or how to change that. *EDIT* Figured it out.. I think. Still not sure what the localhost warning is for but things seem to be working.

I change the "Container Variable: WEBPASSWORD" in the docker settings with my own password but don't update the password on pihole.
Restarted pihole docker and I can enter with the "default" password and not mu password.
you would need to access the CLI of the pihole, ` pihole -a -p ` allows you to set a new password, not sure how else you could go about doing it...

I been working on this as well..... I had it working for a while in the template ad a Variable with the key as ServerIPv6 and asign a IPV6 address. I had it working once and then uninstalled it and then reinstalled and now pihole wont pick up the IPV6 addresss. I think my issue is with my router though sicne I cant assign a dedicated IPv6 Address.
What would happen if the UnRaid server is down ? will I lose connection ?>

Reckon you could do a supplementary video showing how to get PiHole to work with a router wide VPN? I've never been able to get this working, so it's either all my devices are on VPN with no PiHole or all are with PiHole but no VPN haha .... surely there's a way!!? 😊
Can you have multiple DNS servers? Lets say the pi-hole is down, automatically go to the next DNS server?
I would love an answer to this... I've ran my pi-hole on an actual raspberry pi for a couple of years, and it does a great job. Except when it happens to go offline for whatever reason. Your whole internet is nuked. Thought I might have better options with it in unraid, but in this situation, every time I spin down the server my internet goes out. Not a viable solution for me.
@@davemoser3953 get a cache disk, it does not spin down ever.
@@raczyk I have a cache disk, and while what you say is true(ish), if you restart your server, or it goes down for any reason, you will lose internet. Entirely. I understand why that is the case, but I'd like to see a workaround.

@@raczyk If you add a secondary DNS to the router it will cause the ad blocking to fail. Each time the primary fails to resolve an ad, it will go to the secondary DNS and boom, there's your ad. I haven't found a way, yet, to only use that secondary DNS in the event the first one "fails."
I can only get this to work in bridge network type. BR0 just returns; WARNING Misconfigured DNS in /etc/resolv.conf: Two DNS servers are recommended, 127.0.0.1 and any backup server

Started doing this then realised that my ISP doesn't let you alter DNS settings on there routers. Looks like I'll have to buy another router and switch theres to Modem mode.

Using pfSense as a firewall, setup the docker its working , modify my pfSense DHCP to use pi-hole as the DNS rebooted boom the workstation has no internet access. pfsense is using Open NIC DNS, i made pi-hole DNS also open NIC but i can change it. Sorry for all the babbling how do you setup your pfSense?
