Some people (not many) have a natural, seemingly effortless, ability to teach complex things coherently; you're definitely one of them!! Many thanks for sharing this amazing series.

Really appreciate this series. I'm an IT pro in a junior role planning to study for the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator cert from Microsoft, and I'll be using my Proxmox server to simulate a corporate on-premises Windows domain to create a hybrid infrastructure. I'll be setting up a Proxmox cluster on a few old Dell bricks I got from work for free. I've wanted to do this for a long time but didn't know where to even start...VSphere and ESXI seem so complicated, running Hyper-V on Windows Server is a bit too resource-intensive for running on older hardware. Proxmox is the perfect solution and this series is providing a much needed launchpad for this inexperienced professional!

I am agreeing with all of the positive reviews and messages here.... watching your tutorials makes it sooo easy for a Linux Newbie like me. I have been installing and playing around with Linux OS's for many years and NEVER really understood what the heck I was doing, just checking it out mostly. Now that I am getting into the idea of having a home media server, I feel very confident in watching your videos and doing the setup myself. You are very thorough and easy to follow along with. Thanks so much for what you do. I couldn't help but subscribe and become a paying member because you deserve to be appreciated.

I've just installed Ubuntu 22.04 LTS a few weeks ago for work and I'm getting used to it. I'm also assigned to setup a full Proxmox machine so I can migrate two older Proxmox machines' data into this new one that I've created. Couldn't of made it this far without you.

@@justinzhao9013 Well that's the way how you should learn an OS, dive and and use it. I see so many people saying "I've used Linux for years" but they never got passed an install on a virtual machine and clicking a few buttons. Unless you actually use an OS, troubleshoot it and fix instead of "trying the reinstall", you'll never learn what makes the box tick.
If, like the original poster, someone says he or she's not feeling confident after "many years" of use, I really start wondering what he calls "using".

You can actually disable the enterprise repository if you highlight the URL and then click Disable above. This will un-check it and make it so you don't get the error when trying to do an apt/apt-get update but it will not stop the nag pop-up message.

In addition, you can add the no-subscription repo, so you can still get updates from Proxmox--though they won't be tested quite as thoroughly as if you were using the enterprise repo. Both are discussed at the Proxmox wiki here: pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Package_Repositories.
This should be an immediate post-installation action if you aren't going to pay for a subscription for your server.

This is now actually required on 7.1 in order to update the other repos, the error will actually prevent it from updating the other repos.

Correction: You need to have either the Enterprise or No-Subscription repository enabled.
If you don't have a subscription to Enterprise, you need to add the No-Subscription repository, or apt won't know where to look to get PVE updates. It will only get baseline Debian updates.
And since PVE is configured to specifically use their own versions of certain packages, they won't update even if they do exist in the Debian repos.

Just FYI, if you do not add the no-subscription repo and do not have an enterprise subscription, you will not get updates for proxmox packages, which is a security issue. The updates shown in the video are the debian updates only, which are on by default.

at about 12:06 in your video you talked about checking or unchecking the enterprise box...but said it was grayed out and could not be changed here.
It can be changed HERE, click on the title/URL section of that line and it will bring-to-light the option to disable. Same with the other selection in the repository window. You can enable and disable in the same way: click on the url or wanted or unwanted repository and you will then be able to click on enable or disable with button just above the repository list.

On PVE 7.1 you actually need to disable the enterprise repositories if you don't have a subscription, the error will actually prevent you from updating your repo list, just fyi.

    Great class...!!!
Can you explain under "pve1" what is the difference between "local(pve1)" and "local-lvm(pve1)" please?
    Thank you :)

    • @LtdJorge
      @LtdJorge ปีที่แล้ว

Local is a normal (ext4 most likely) filesystem for simple files like ISOs. Local-lvm is the volume storage, for storing volumes like virtual machine disks.

Hi, I had a look at your serias of proxmox course - really great work and a big thanks for that.
Now trying to play with it I have one question. What is a good way of organisation?
As a first step I want to run NodeRed, MQTT and Grafana. Later on maybe HomeAssistant and some other things.
Now I am thinking about when using a virtual machine and when a container? Also using one instance with docker and then running all container in one vm / container or using always one vm / container for each docker container, ... ?
Maybe to be more precise - yes I have seen the video about container versus vm.
    - I am thing about should I use docker or should I install every service in a single vm or container?
    - If docker, should I use one vm or container and in that system one docker system with running NodeRed, MQTT and Grafana at the same time? Questions over questions ;-)
Thanks for your support 🙏, Marco

Hi there Jay, what would be the advantage of installing SPICE? Can Proxmox be accessed both through the Web UI & just by booting Proxmox up like any other OS then signing into it and using it directly & how do you set that up? I'm trying to follow along its a lot of time to learn just to be able to
isolate communication apps, a private local cloud, a file server and I'd like to learn to play some games for fun. All this stuff is pretty amazing to me. Thank you for freely sharing the benefits of your experience.

About 17:02, wouldn't it make more sense if the datacenter settings didn't override the individual server settings, but the other way around? Wouldn't it allow for finer custom conf on each servers in the cluster? (I could be completely wrong because I just started learning proxmox:) )

Great videos - Do you have any tips on best method and practices (and the most secure) to remote connect to the Proxmox VE Server Web console UI without connection through some sort of central pipe, like VPN or Cloudflare or such. I want to connect to my Proxmox Web UI remotely as I travel a lot and don't want messy subscriptions either. Maybe this could be your next training video to add to your already valuable training video series. :)

    • @youtubak777
      @youtubak777 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The VPN (IPsec or OpenVPN) option is just the best, I'd stick with that for any remote management... There are some other ways, but are either insecure or very complicated. If you don't have anywhere to set it up, you can even run it inside a VM on the proxmox.

I've had what I think is an Apple Xserve with 2 Xeon E5462 procs and 8 x 2GB dumped on me so I've installed Proxmox to learn it but it is only seeing 4GB. The RAM is on a daughter board which plugs into the mother/logic board. Could that be the cause?

    • @gorillaau

That can be due to the hardware clock being set to local time, say if it had windows on the machine previously. More investigation needed. Perhaps check the forums for other causes.

Hello, I really liked what I've seen so far. But I thought it was a shame not to have shown the physical part happening, because from what I understand to run ProxMox I will need at least 2 machines (PCs), correct? Because apparently it doesn't have a GUI interface in the same environment in which it was installed.

You guys have no clue how this is changing my life. I am new to Proxmox, Hypervisors and containers. Just getting my lab setup now. If I have got this far, it is only and only because of this channel. I am having a hard time setting up the storage. I am newbie and please excuse my dumb questions. Below are what I see in the disk section. And when I go to the directory, to create directory, it is empty. I am sure there is something I am missing. I have SAS drives and I have set up RAID 5 on this machine. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am not seeing /dev sdb and sdc. I am unable to create any disks or any volume groups because they show they are empty.
