In this week's episode, we explore a charming home located in Tiong Bahru, Singapore. This 941 sqft property, built in 1973, offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The apartment, originally in its original state, underwent a thoughtful transformation while preserving its original character.
The owners, Sarah and Rory, wanted to create a space that reflected their personalities and incorporated their cherished belongings.
Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a warm and welcoming ambiance. To the left is the dining area, where they often host friends for dinner. The dining room features a special rug gifted by Sarah's mother, an old table from Shanghai, and custom chairs. Portraits of Rory's Dutch family and artwork from their previous homes adorn the walls.
The living area is a comfortable space designed around their collection of furniture. The large sofa and Moroccan rug from their honeymoon in Marrakesh create a cosy atmosphere. The restoration of the original shuttered windows adds character to the space.
The kitchen, once enclosed, was transformed into an open concept. It now serves as a hub for cooking and entertaining guests at the breakfast bar. The original windows and grills were retained as unique design elements.
A hidden powder room adds a touch of drama with its moody wallpaper. The study room is Rory's personal space, where he works, reads, and meditates in a minimalist setting.
The master bedroom exudes warmth with neutral tones, wood accents, and soft textures. Limewash paint on the walls enhances the inviting atmosphere. The master bathroom follows the same design palette, featuring square white tiles and a serene ambiance.
Sarah and Rory are delighted with how their home reflects their personalities and journey as a couple. It's a place where they've planted their roots and created lasting memories.
Special thanks to the homeowners for opening up their home to us.

A very pleasant home which does not follow any current trends of having curve edges or corner, fluted walls or cabinets or using Kit Kat tiles. Nice!

Truly wonderful 😊
In my primary school years, we had a heritage tour about Singapore's public housing. When the guide brought us before the Tiong Bahru SIT flats, and was going on and on about the Art-Deco ego fight between architects, I kept staring at a painting of a cat through one of the open windows. Beside the cat painting was a black and white painting of half a face of a woman. I couldn't take my eyes off them, and kept walking closer to the window. All the while I thought to myself, "Who are the people who still live here, and who are the people who choose to move into here now? Are they old uncle and auntie? Is it some art studio? Are there home businesses?"
Today I finally have my answer: It's Sarah and Rory.
Lovely renovation!!
Do you know what brand of pots they have? (SAUCE?) - look strong and nice
Thanks
Do you have anything on the Changi ex military estate where I lived in the 70's?
Any information on the ID?
is that an art piece from Julia long? Gorgeous
How does a Dutch man sound so Irish? :D
He sounds Dutch.
A stunning home ,simplicity and warmth oozing. A home waiting for its residents.
💯
In what way is the powder room "hidden"?
Are you able to share who the ID is?
Disclaimer: non of the Heritage Apartment In Tiong Bahru is build in 1973. They were give a fresh lease at 1973.

Thanks for watching 😊
God! We found Michael Keaton’s brother. 😂😂
Is this hdb or private?
All SIT era flats are under government. some pre war flats in tiong bahru is under URA.
I love the design of the powder room but hate the placement. Why do people put a powder room in a kitchen?! It's a little disgusting. I don't know if you had any other placement options, so if not, I get it, but...
This was probably the best option for them.
IF you mean the WC, it is the British that put it in Kitchen and as a flat you cannot change the placement as and where you want.
It could be to maximize the closeness of plumbing between the two spaces inside walls. It's more efficient.
Overall its not bad but the master bedroom clearly does not work. The wardrobe is probably 30 cm away from the side of the bed. What really blows my mind is the powder room with direct access from the kitchen, exactly in front of the stove... I mean, it's just awful hygiene. And it's illegal (at least) in Italy for hygiene reasons
The whole thing clearly works for them. You know people do clean their houses regularly - there is no reason the PR is where it is. And they don't live in Italy.
Great.. can I visit your home ?
I am in Singapore for few days from Bangladesh. Please respond
Um, it's a private home dude. They don't know you from Adam either - I doubt they're going to let a total stranger come and take a peek inside. 🙄
Weird pillar in the middle of the hall and not 1 toilet?!
The pillar is a load-bearing, supporting joint - it needs to be there. There is a hidden toilet accessible from the kitchen area.
1973? More like 1933 SIT
Why he sounds Scottish not Dutch
Where's the bomb shelter? ;-)
somewhere underground. this is not a BTO flat.
Dirty bicycle wheels above head not good
Thank you for watching 😊
Weak
So when all these childless couples, who could afford the cost of modifying family living spaces into just one big bedroom units, are gone in about 20 years time from now, will Singapore become underpopulated?
Seriously?? u broke the kitchen walls to make it open which is the cheap look version? a kitchen with walls is good for privacy, prevents fishy and cooking smells from over flowing in the whole house, is good for storage and cupboards on the walls and creates more intimacy .You are doing things backwards
