The moment many of you have been waiting for is finally here!
In December 2014, the BKSDA, with the support of our partners IAR Indonesia, rescued Budi from a tiny chicken cage. The conditions he had been kept in brought a tear to the eyes of his rescuers, who found Budi laying on the cage floor looking incredibly weak and fragile. For the first year of his life, he had been fed a diet consisting entirely of condensed milk, causing his little body to fade away as the days dragged on.
Thankfully, he was rescued just in time, and taken to the IAR Indonesia rescue centre in a critical condition. A diet lacking in solid food resulted in severe malnutrition, causing his body to swell up with fluid due to protein deficiency. He was weak, unable to move, and severely anaemic.
The IAR Indonesia team did not give up on him, and nor did YOU!
His story broke the hearts of millions across the world, with many of you kindly making donations to support Budi as he began the long road to recovery. Our supporters have fuelled everything, from his initial medical treatment to his ongoing rehabilitation. You helped him take his shaky first steps, and watched with pride as he built his first ever nest. We are so grateful to all of you!
Today, we wanted to show you the results of your incredible generosity. Budi is no longer the tiny, fragile orphan that first arrived at the sanctuary. He is now an increasingly independent young male, currently getting up to mischief in Forest School on Pulau Besar island, a protected area of forest within the centre. He loves to annoy his keepers and has started to develop an interest in the ladies! Although he still has a long way to go before he can be deemed suitable for release, we are confident that he will one day be ready to return to his rightful rainforest home. 😊

Its not true at all. He doesn’t seem sad - thats how they look. Ive spent time with them including in the wild.

@@carlapatton4096 You're talking about adult Budi, right? What is it that tells you he looks "so sad". Can you actually point out specific behaviours or facial expressions that indicate a deep sadness lasting over the years? Or are you just looking at him through a filter created in your mind that makes you think you're some kind of "empath" who can sense the orangutan's emotions even though you've never even read a research paper on primate behaviour? I actually have read published papers on primate behaviour, and the truth of the matter is, Budi probably stopped being sad for his dead mother the very moment they gave him a bottle of warm milk and a soft blankie and stuffy to cuddle with. Everything a mother gives her baby in the wild can be easily replaced by humans, and the baby will most likely even prefer the latter over feeling his mother's arms around him again. The mother in turn has probably already made another baby and forgotten about the previous one.

In 2015 my daughter showed me this vidéo and it was the beginning of my ❤️story with Orangutan, since then i adopt him regurlaly and others too, now it’s éléphants 🐘 rhinocéros 🦏 felins like lion……. Budy.s story broke my heart. In 2017 my husband and i went to Borneo visited doctor Karmele from IAR it was a one time life experience

He is so stinkin precious, what a little cutie!! His life didn't get the best start but he is sure making up for it now. My joints are sore & swollen every day so I know how he felt & for a monkey who needs to climb & go thru the trees being swollen like that is surely a death sentence. I love all the jungle school orangutans, but I think Budi won just a little extra space in my heart. His tenacity and his will to push on when he was in so much pain shows he has such an extraordinary will to live. Bravo to all the caregivers, vets, and technici who work so hard for all these wonderful creatures. The work you do is so impressive. It's so sad that it's needed, but so wonderful that so many of you are willing to give so much of yourselves to make sure other species have a chance to continue living and thriving.
Even when he was a baby and in so much pain, Budi had those curious eyes, deep as wells. An enormous round of applause and congratulations to all that have aided him in his recovery.
It must be incredibly gratifying to see him so well now, snatched back from the jaws of death. Thank you for caring for him and all his friends.

Thank you so much for saving him and ending his pain but I, too, see sadness in his eyes. Orangutans stay with their mothers for 7 years, he didn't get 7 months with his.

Orangutans rarely crie out in pain. I have seen them give birth without a sound. For him to verbalize his pain so loudly he must have been suffering mightily.

I know this video is old, but my gosh it’s miraculous how he’s recovered. I’m so happy for him. It literally brought me tears of relief that he’s so normal and climbing. The hope was drained from his eyes like a POW, then it was as though that pain had lingered on in his gaze as he got older, but not completely, as it was just a memory
