Lufthansa Flight 181 was a Lufthansa Boeing 737-230 Adv aircraft denominated Landshut that was hijacked on October 13, 1977 by four members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (who called themselves Commando Martyr Halime). On October 18, with the support of the Somali military, the aircraft was stormed by the West German counter-terrorism group GSG9 der Bundespolizei, the elite counter-terrorism and special operations unit of the German Federal Police, in Mogadishu, Somalia and all 86 passengers rescued. The rescue operation was codenamed Feuerzauber (German term for "Fire Magic"). The hijacking was carried out in an attempt to secure the release of imprisoned Red Army Faction leaders and is considered to be part of the German Autumn.
GSG9 is deployed in cases of hostage taking, kidnapping, terrorism and extortion. The group may also be used to secure locations, neutralize targets, track down fugitives and sometimes conduct sniper operations. Furthermore, the group is very active in developing and testing methods and tactics for these missions. Finally, the group may provide advice to the different Länder, ministries and international allies. The group assists the Bundespolizei and other federal and local agencies on request. At the time of the 1977 Mogadishu mission, the Commander of the Israeli Border Police Tzvi War described GSG9 as "The best anti-terrorist group in the world."
From 1972 to 2003 they reportedly completed over 1,500 missions,discharging their weapons on only five occasions. At the SWAT World Challenge in 2005, GSG 9 won an impressive eight out of eight events, beating 17 other teams. GSG 9 defended its championship the following year, and placed fifth in 2007.
Germany offered to give assistance to India in the wake of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks. GSG 9 helped train and upgrade the National Security Guards, the primary Indian counter-terrorism unit.Further help was provided to the Mumbai Police so that they could raise a SWAT team.

I have recently found out about this incident. Those two Lufthansa pilots are my heroes from now on. It's a shame that the world know next to nothing about the bravery of these men. They deserve to have their story told to the whole world and remembered for all the lives that they have saved.
That will hopefully be fully perpetuated with the aircraft involved being preserved in Germany.
The copilot received the highest civilian medal in Germany and gave it back in the 2010s when an RAF terrorist from that era was pardoned. That's called integrity.

I was flying, as a kid from London Heathrow to Hong Kong via Rome and Bombay that day it began. Departing in the afternoon on a British Airways 747, we landed at Rome, but were not allowed to disembark for a leg stretch due to a 'terrorism issue' at the airport. I never knew exactly what it was till years later. It's good to hear the 737-230 involved, D-ABCE 'Landshut' has been saved for preservation in Germany, and can be dedicated to the good captain who lost his life. Historic twice over as aside this, Lufthansa was the launch customer for this plane.
This is worth a Hollywood remake! Awesome movie!

They actually had a 737-200 to use, long phased out by Lufthansa by the time this was made, not many of them around in Europe generally by then.
(I'm being nerdy I know but that attention to detail usually extends to the accurate telling of the story, based on the facts, in general).
It was filmed in Casablanca (the old Anfa airport), Morocco. An old (ex- RAM) 737-200 was used, repainted in Lufthansa colours. I was an 'extra' playing one of the passengers. We were kept on the plane for many days 'recreating' the conditions of the hijacking. A very smelly and uncomfortable experience, but very well paid for Morocco and we were very well looked after by the production company.
I never knew about this film till yesterday. As an enthusiast of the 737-200, I'd be interested in details of the 737-200 used, registration or makers number, and it's current fate. It's good to know the original aircraft involved is now at the Dornier Museum in Germany, yet to be restored.

@@erikadittmar3483 alles klar bei dir? Hast du auch nur ganz kurz über das nachgedacht was du einem Menschen schreibst?! Wenn er den Film augenscheinlich als englische Version erachtet, dann wird dieser ehrenwerte Mitmensch ganz höchstwahrscheinlich taub sein und deshalb denken, dass dieser Film englisch ist, aufgrund der ENGLISCHEN Untertitel! Denk doch bitte das nächste Mal nach, bevor du Menschen im Internet blöd an machst!
Wenn du stark schwerhörig oder taub bist kannst du die automatisch erzeugten Untertitel von TH-cam anmachen, da die Mogadischu Teile hier eine deutsche Tonspur haben. Ich weiß, die sind nicht das wahre, aber vielleicht besser als gar nichts zu verstehen.

Ganz schön verwöhnt
ich stören mich an den Untertiteln nicht,so kann ich mein Englisch verbessern und überprüfen.
Mich stört eher das 4:3 Bild eines 16:9 Films, da das Bild fast zur Hälfte aus schwarzen Balken besteht und zusätzlich die unterirdische 480p Auflösung. Ich gucke den Film trotzdem, obwohl ich mir das grottige Bild normalerweise nicht antun würde. Das mache ich aus einem einzigen Grund: Diesen Film kann man komischerweise nirgendwo sehen oder streame. Den gibt es nur HIER in dieser unoffiziellen Art und Weise!

Und der Ton ist auch unterordentlich schlecht. Das ist zudem nur eine 2.0 Stereo Tonspur.
