It depends on if you want to react to forestella as a whole or single memebers, because in the first case I would recommend if I leave, spread silk on my heart (which arrangement I think it's amazing) or their original song "utopia" (even if there are many other as good as these), if you prefere the second case then I think you would like a duet that the tenor (Mingyu) sang with a memeber of another quartet, the song is "rosalina", or angain of him: balada triste de trompeta or balada para un loco. I'm waiting for the release of this video❤❤ but I still need to wait some days🥹

Love all your analyses of Forestella! They are my favorite quartet …and there many exceptional quartets in Korea. Ko Woorim and Cho MinGyu are classically trained. Bae Doohoon has musical theatre background. Kang HyungHo, the countertenor, had no formal music training and was a chemical engineer before auditioning for Phantom Singers from which this group was formed. This group has a unique sound and your analyses have taught me a lot on why I love them. I would love to hear what you think of their Korean ballads- Silla’s moonlight, As I live, If I Leave - all well loved Korean classic songs.

Extraordinary performance. Thank you for your analysis. No matter what they sing, they are epic! Their English is exceptional. I hope you can review White Night sometime - another fabulous song with Kang Hyungho's amazingly high notes. Also, maybe consider doing Kang Hyungho's PITTA performance of Phantom of the Opera. Considering he had no formal education in music (he was formerly a research chemist), yet his voice is beautiful and flawless! Each member is a stellar performer in their own right. Look forward to seeing Ko Woorim back next May. Forestella is definitely my favorite singing group.

Hi Peter, so good to see you back reacting to Forestella again. Much has transpired as referred to below. Not sure if you’re aware, but this is one of the themes to a game series: League of Legends. The original performer of this song is AGAINST THE CURRENT sung by a female. Forestella performed this in yet another Immortal Songs competition episode where the theme was THE LAST SONG … asking: What would you sing if it was your last performance ever…Forestella chose this song and even though they didn’t advance (much to my surprise and puzzlement) past the 2nd round in this particular contest , though they were invited to open the King of Kings episode with Despacito as part of a congratulatory performance celebrating their unprecedented and currently unbeaten 6 consecutive Immortal Songs KING OF KINGS trophy record. Despacito is entirely sung in Spanish and is a song and video I never liked by the original artist Luis Fonsi, but I thoroughly enjoyed FORESTELLA’s vocal arrangements…another great showing of the bass singer Woorim…no wonder views of the various videos KBS released, Drone version, 4K version, 8k version etc are almost over 10million on TH-cam if not surpassed by the time this L.N.D. reaction is posted. But I would like to understand more about how they did this vocal arrangement etc. and why it is getting attention especially from some people who liked the original version.
Finally Peter!!! I've really missed your analysis and reaction to Forestella!! Woorim is doing his Army stint and will be back with the guys next year. There are several videos of him in uniform and performing. So presently its Mingyu, Hyungho/PITTA and Doohoon. And they are all performing both as solo as as a trio. Mingyu's MonoDrama is especially fun! And Hyungho/PITTA has done some incredibly beautiful and moving stuff. Some truly wonderful stuff there!! At nearly 70 years old, I have NEVER heard a group like them. Their vocal range, harmonies and stunning arrangements, I think are unique. Two are opera trained, the lyrical? tenor Mingyu and bass Woorim, but he is only 28 years old, so I would imagine his voice will develop further? The tenor with the beautiful tone, Doohoon has a musical theatre background and the countertenor, Hyungho was a originally a chemical engineer. Thank you, Peter, for your analysis and comments on Forestella's performances. It is really great to have a professional explain why my tummy turns over when I hear them perform.
Forestella is my favorite group with my favorite individual singer being Dimash. I love how Forestella utilizes the bass as a foundation, so rarely heard from other groups, but finding a true bass is not that easy, as you well know. Their arrangements are incredible and I love their original songs as well, they seem to all have important messages and I appreciate that as well.
Once you announced that you were doing an analysis on this song I literally put the date on my calendar. Forestella is my happy place. I already loved this song when Against the Current did it and didn't expect to like it MORE. I was floored by how great this rendition was. The dramatics on this performance, and featuring Ko Woorim, it gave it such a heavy feel. I had chills for several moments. Cho Mingyu doesn't get much play in this one, but he is solidly heard in the background and his unique sounding voice really ties them all together. He's the blend between the Opera and the Pop sound that pulls them all together. Forestella forever has my heart, 🌲⭐❤
Yes, that was MinGyu’s role in this song and he certainly provided that beautifully, adding so much to that wall of sound Forestella creates. A perfectly crafted performance with Woorim’s bass voice accentuating and contrasting with HyungHo’s over-arching trills and Doohoon’s mesmerising vocals and all 4 member’s stage presence. I’m assuming that the staging was Doohoon’s responsibility, because it was spectacular…it became an epic stage with HyungHo and MinGyu raised at differing heights, with HyungHo moving up and down those steps adding even more dynamism into their stage presence as well as the flames and lasers etc. Very cleverly done. And the outfits are one of my favourite ones they’ve worn to date, theme-wise. And as you know they’ve had some spectacular outfits over the years. 😅❤ What a breathtaking experience it must have been for audience members that day, with all the colours, the lights, the flames, the collective voices making that sonic wave and the drum beat…

Yes, I agree, one of FORESTELLA's best performances. But there are so many of them! And about Ko WooRim's "opera mode": FORESTELLA takes "crossover" very first, and part of their goal is mixing genres AND vocal styles. Of course, Ko WooRim's vocals could sound purely contemporary, as you can hear in other of their songs. But these guys have completely different musical backgrounds and want to use them very consciously. Their very different timbres are a remarkable part of their ID and thats make FORESTELLA among others so special. Maybe unusual for some (conditioned) ears, but for me e.g. interesting and refreshingly different, just like it is for many others. A few decades ago, classical orchestras were frowned upon in contemporary music like rock for a long time and today they are indispensable here.
I remember Mingyu & Woorim's uni seniors who took part in Phantom Singer season 1 mentioned that PS became a huge phenomenon among them conservatory students was because the k classical scene was still very conservative and Korea was particularly slow to warm up to the classical crossover genre. In 1989 opera singer Park In-soo was shunned by the k classical community for collaborating with a folk singer to release a song. Kai, one of the pioneers of k classical crossover and a fellow Seoul National University graduate like Woorim got so much flack from his professors when he went into crossover (instead of opera) back in 2002. In the k music industry context, Forestella really broke down a lot of barriers and made "operatic singing" cool to the public.

Fun fact about Woorim: he actually entered the 2016 Toulouse competition, his first ever international competition, and made it to the semifinals. The K classical world already had eyes on him as an up and coming star because as you said, true basses are so rare and even more so in Korea (they were mostly known for baritones and tenors). But he joined Phantom Singer during his junior year...and the rest is history.
They teach me the precious lesson of living sincerely by creating such wonderful music with only hard work without any tricks. So Forestella is my dream because I want to live like them. Every performance of them make one or two of them shining a little more, and I think they made this performance turn around the bass and the barytone vocalists and I love particularly this operatic break of Woorim about collecting the scars, I love that this stand out and not blend, it’s very epic and suit very well this song. . Thank you for your explanations, love this performance, one of my favorite. I bet you ll be loving their cover of Champions the fifa anthem ligue and I suggest you snow globe composed by kang hyun ho. I saw the Arabian Nights by Bass Gang, so I think you'd be interested in Ko WooRim's Arabian Nights. There's a compilation video of 3 songs in KBS Open Concert, 1 Forestella original song White Night + 1 Ko WooRim solo Arabian Nights + 1 Korean old song cover Spread Silk on My Heart which has some Arabian vibe inspired from Forestella's Dubai EXPO experience. That compilation video has the only globally available Arabian Nights by Ko WooRim. (We have another Arabian Nights video in particular, but it's geoblocked.) Well, there are tons of fan-cams from Forestella concerts, however the sound isn't good enough.
Hope you continue with more from Forestella! I'd recommend "Je Suis Malade" as many others have mentioned (a more stripped down performance than others you've reacted to, highlights each member's vocals individually) and also "Inner Universe" (from an anime soundtrack, rich in discordant harmonies and really highlighting the bass and countertenor)

unfortunately it is due to the constant threat from North Korea that is being ruled by one of the most evil regimes in the present. South Korean men have to have at least some basic military training just in case of war takes place in between the 2 countries (supposed to be 1 whole country). only few will get exemption under some conditions.
Same in Taiwan and Israel. And probably many other countries who live close to violent threats. I know that in Israel even the women have to serve 2 years. And anyone who's served & therefore trained is considered to be in the Reserves if things get bad. Not sure how other countries work.

Forstella is amazing, really great singers as you already know. If you you want to check out another great cover of this song, check out a South Korean band by the name Kardi with the lead singer Kim Yeji. Her voice is stunning. It’s this bluesy, raspy voice that’s a throw back to 80s female Rockstars like Pat Benatar amazing and they do the song using traditional Korean instruments along with electric guitar and drums and piano It’s one kind

Thank you! I enjoyed your reaction. Do you think, you could react to Forbidden love by Crezl? Crezl was formed in the same way as Forestella through Phantom singer in season 4. Crezl is the first group which all 4 members have different background (Opera baritone, musical actor, actor of Korean traditional music and k pop Idol). Thus they got their unique style and I was absolutely thrilled when their first title song was self produced. Their performances tend to be quite theatrical that is probably on k pop idol due to his background, he is also from self produced group Pentagon.

Hi Peter, so good to see you back reacting to Forestella again. Much has transpired as referred to below. Not sure if you’re aware, but this is one of the themes to a game series: League of Legends. The original performer of this song is AGAINST THE CURRENT sung by a female. Forestella performed this in yet another Immortal Songs competition episode where the theme was THE LAST SONG … asking: What would you sing if it was your last performance ever…Forestella chose this song and even though they didn’t advance (much to my surprise and puzzlement) past the 2nd round in this particular contest , though they were invited to open the King of Kings episode with Despacito as part of a congratulatory performance celebrating their unprecedented and currently unbeaten 6 consecutive Immortal Songs KING OF KINGS trophy record. Despacito is entirely sung in Spanish and is a song and video I never liked by the original artist Luis Fonsi, but I thoroughly enjoyed FORESTELLA’s vocal arrangements…another great showing of the bass singer Woorim…no wonder views of the various videos KBS released, Drone version, 4K version, 8k version etc are almost over 10million on TH-cam if not surpassed by the time this L.N.D. reaction is posted. But I would like to understand more about how they did this vocal arrangement etc. and why it is getting attention especially from some people who liked the original version.
Good suggestion! Usually the reactors just talk about the well done Spanish accent but never mention the arrangement or vocals.

Finally Peter!!! I've really missed your analysis and reaction to Forestella!! Woorim is doing his Army stint and will be back with the guys next year. There are several videos of him in uniform and performing. So presently its Mingyu, Hyungho/PITTA and Doohoon. And they are all performing both as solo as as a trio. Mingyu's MonoDrama is especially fun! And Hyungho/PITTA has done some incredibly beautiful and moving stuff. Some truly wonderful stuff there!! At nearly 70 years old, I have NEVER heard a group like them. Their vocal range, harmonies and stunning arrangements, I think are unique. Two are opera trained, the lyrical? tenor Mingyu and bass Woorim, but he is only 28 years old, so I would imagine his voice will develop further? The tenor with the beautiful tone, Doohoon has a musical theatre background and the countertenor, Hyungho was a originally a chemical engineer. Thank you, Peter, for your analysis and comments on Forestella's performances. It is really great to have a professional explain why my tummy turns over when I hear them perform.

Forestella is my favorite group with my favorite individual singer being Dimash. I love how Forestella utilizes the bass as a foundation, so rarely heard from other groups, but finding a true bass is not that easy, as you well know. Their arrangements are incredible and I love their original songs as well, they seem to all have important messages and I appreciate that as well.
Once you announced that you were doing an analysis on this song I literally put the date on my calendar.
Forestella is my happy place. I already loved this song when Against the Current did it and didn't expect to like it MORE. I was floored by how great this rendition was. The dramatics on this performance, and featuring Ko Woorim, it gave it such a heavy feel. I had chills for several moments.
Cho Mingyu doesn't get much play in this one, but he is solidly heard in the background and his unique sounding voice really ties them all together. He's the blend between the Opera and the Pop sound that pulls them all together.

Yes, that was MinGyu’s role in this song and he certainly provided that beautifully, adding so much to that wall of sound Forestella creates. A perfectly crafted performance with Woorim’s bass voice accentuating and contrasting with HyungHo’s over-arching trills and Doohoon’s mesmerising vocals and all 4 member’s stage presence. I’m assuming that the staging was Doohoon’s responsibility, because it was spectacular…it became an epic stage with HyungHo and MinGyu raised at differing heights, with HyungHo moving up and down those steps adding even more dynamism into their stage presence as well as the flames and lasers etc. Very cleverly done. And the outfits are one of my favourite ones they’ve worn to date, theme-wise. And as you know they’ve had some spectacular outfits over the years. 😅❤ What a breathtaking experience it must have been for audience members that day, with all the colours, the lights, the flames, the collective voices making that sonic wave and the drum beat…

Yes, I agree, one of FORESTELLA's best performances. But there are so many of them! And about Ko WooRim's "opera mode": FORESTELLA takes "crossover" very first, and part of their goal is mixing genres AND vocal styles. Of course, Ko WooRim's vocals could sound purely contemporary, as you can hear in other of their songs. But these guys have completely different musical backgrounds and want to use them very consciously. Their very different timbres are a remarkable part of their ID and thats make FORESTELLA among others so special. Maybe unusual for some (conditioned) ears, but for me e.g. interesting and refreshingly different, just like it is for many others. A few decades ago, classical orchestras were frowned upon in contemporary music like rock for a long time and today they are indispensable here.
I remember Mingyu & Woorim's uni seniors who took part in Phantom Singer season 1 mentioned that PS became a huge phenomenon among them conservatory students was because the k classical scene was still very conservative and Korea was particularly slow to warm up to the classical crossover genre. In 1989 opera singer Park In-soo was shunned by the k classical community for collaborating with a folk singer to release a song. Kai, one of the pioneers of k classical crossover and a fellow Seoul National University graduate like Woorim got so much flack from his professors when he went into crossover (instead of opera) back in 2002. In the k music industry context, Forestella really broke down a lot of barriers and made "operatic singing" cool to the public.

Fun fact about Woorim: he actually entered the 2016 Toulouse competition, his first ever international competition, and made it to the semifinals. The K classical world already had eyes on him as an up and coming star because as you said, true basses are so rare and even more so in Korea (they were mostly known for baritones and tenors). But he joined Phantom Singer during his junior year...and the rest is history.
They teach me the precious lesson of living sincerely by creating such wonderful music with only hard work without any tricks. So Forestella is my dream because I want to live like them. Every performance of them make one or two of them shining a little more, and I think they made this performance turn around the bass and the barytone vocalists and I love particularly this operatic break of Woorim about collecting the scars, I love that this stand out and not blend, it’s very epic and suit very well this song. . Thank you for your explanations, love this performance, one of my favorite. I bet you ll be loving their cover of Champions the fifa anthem ligue and I suggest you snow globe composed by kang hyun ho. If you love epics songs , Save our lives, white night ( my favorite) and Utopia are something else.

I saw the Arabian Nights by Bass Gang, so I think you'd be interested in Ko WooRim's Arabian Nights. There's a compilation video of 3 songs in KBS Open Concert, 1 Forestella original song White Night + 1 Ko WooRim solo Arabian Nights + 1 Korean old song cover Spread Silk on My Heart which has some Arabian vibe inspired from Forestella's Dubai EXPO experience. That compilation video has the only globally available Arabian Nights by Ko WooRim. (We have another Arabian Nights video in particular, but it's geoblocked.)
Well, there are tons of fan-cams from Forestella concerts, however the sound isn't good enough.
Hope you continue with more from Forestella! I'd recommend "Je Suis Malade" as many others have mentioned (a more stripped down performance than others you've reacted to, highlights each member's vocals individually) and also "Inner Universe" (from an anime soundtrack, rich in discordant harmonies and really highlighting the bass and countertenor)

Peter, the men in South Korea have no choice but to join the military, it’s mandatory!
And the other three members have already done their military service.
unfortunately it is due to the constant threat from North Korea that is being ruled by one of the most evil regimes in the present. South Korean men have to have at least some basic military training just in case of war takes place in between the 2 countries (supposed to be 1 whole country). only few will get exemption under some conditions.
And I believe Woorim will be doing it until May 2025 - so he even has some time left! 😉
Same in Taiwan and Israel. And probably many other countries who live close to violent threats. I know that in Israel even the women have to serve 2 years. And anyone who's served & therefore trained is considered to be in the Reserves if things get bad. Not sure how other countries work.
He could have tried to win an eligible international concour to be exempted from service, but decided to do his duties to the country instead.

It’s this bluesy, raspy voice that’s a throw back to 80s female Rockstars like Pat Benatar amazing and they do the song using traditional Korean instruments along with electric guitar and drums and piano It’s one kind

Thank you! I enjoyed your reaction. Do you think, you could react to Forbidden love by Crezl? Crezl was formed in the same way as Forestella through Phantom singer in season 4. Crezl is the first group which all 4 members have different background (Opera baritone, musical actor, actor of Korean traditional music and k pop Idol). Thus they got their unique style and I was absolutely thrilled when their first title song was self produced. Their performances tend to be quite theatrical that is probably on k pop idol due to his background, he is also from self produced group Pentagon.
