    After watching this, what was one of your biggest takeaways, and Is burnout something you think you might be struggling with?

      Problems to concentrate on and increased irritability or sadness. I wonder how well those that are burnt out can concentrate on the video at the moment.

      My expectations are not given by my boss they are mine! They are unreachable! Dont necessarily see it as a bad thing because whats the point of doing anything if you arent trying to be the best at it? On the flip side its emotionally and physically exhausting because I'm never satisfied with myself. Just the other day my boss had to calm me down because I was upset with myself eventho "you are doing a great job and without you we would be far worse off than we are!" Not sure what the cure is for these impossible standards

      I put a lot of pressure on myself. I go to a Psych Social program and love being helpful with my peers but I put a lot of pressure to always be available and helping people. I have been saying no especially for physical tasks because of my health. I was raised to always be doing something it was necessary back then to physically survive we had to work in the garden and then canning/freezing food etc. I help people do things I they can't but otherwise I show them how to do it. I have gotten a little better about asking for help. I am very passive so don't like asking for help I used to just do without rather than ask I knew people couldn't read my mind and didn't expect it but things are a lot easier asking. I still have a hard time with boundaries. Signs for me is I have trouble concentrating. I also get irritated but I have not let it get that far in a long time. I have been binge eating a lot lately and not exercising as much.

      Great video as always :) I dealt with a hard burnout one year ago, a mix of work issues, relationships, finances, housing, family... All together like a domino effect! After months of pushing through pain and anxiety, I am now starting to go back on track. It's been so useful to have such problems simultaneously that I became emotionally tougher and a super go-getter. Besides learning to ask for help cost me a lot because of a strong independent personality, but without support from the community I would have attempted suicide.
      The sun is shining again!

    I started school for a masters in Psychology at 41, and I stumbled upon you during research. I called it "searching for peers." I'm aiming to become a licensed therapist, but also do TH-cam videos.

      So I want to cater to people that don't get a lot of attention. 2 types specifically are Medical professionals who suffer from moral injury, and Trans folks that need an ear that isn't going to cross examine their decision to transition.

    It's not worth it when we push ourselves to the limit, when we give that much that we forget to take care if ourselves... we need to establish boundaries and knowing when to say no, respect ourselves and take care of ourselves.

    Fantastic, struggling to get started day after day is definitely one of the biggest signs. As soon as that starts to happen, it's important to take a step back and reflect, as it can have awful consequences

    Hi Julia, I burned out years ago; ER nurse 12 hr shifts, 3 teenage boys at home, husband, unengaged n alcoholic spouse (didnt realize at the time). First separation, moved n met a friend who introduced me to Al Anon. Hard but helped me so much. After 3 more separations thats over for 8 yrs. But things kept coming, bad hard things so Ive had 19 nervous breakdowns by now. This year things finally stopping with a few caveats but long term chronic stress I think hope is over. Over all these years Ive learned about boundaries, healing codependency, still learning to stop reacting, continue learning about healing every day. Ive been on antidepressant many years and thank God for help in our day, but managing better. Last 7 yrs nursed son thru 22 oral maxillo-facial surgeries from injury in military but he now lives just down the street, is blind but functions well. Like I said things have let up this year by and large and Im so glad!! Im doing some education for myself so I can work at home part time. I'm disabled as my health fell apart in so many ways but Im managing all that. This is just a tip of the iceberg so if anyone is listening to me LISTEN to JULIA before its too late. If not for a strong constitution I would be bed-ridden or in an asylum! Seriously! Help yourself first! Great one Julia!

      Kathie C. Jones Yes I hear you and i have been going through the same things. Life can be so difficult but look at all we have accomplished. We kept moving forward. Maybe centimeter by centimeter but we have gotten this far. Medications are helping me somewhat. My son said to me “ mom look at all you have accomplished and gotten through. You can get through anything! You are a fighter and survivor. You will get through this too. “ That was exactly what I needed to hear right at that moment. I am praying for you. Much Love... xoxo

    Just went to the hospital. Thought I was having a stroke. Under a lot of stress and lost 15lbs. Not a healthy way to lose weight. Thank you for this!!!

      Dude same thing. All the time. The worst is when you can't get meds and the doctors tell you that the "new laws" only allow them to give you one mg of ativan then by the time you leave it's wearing off and your ready to go to the next hospital because your broke and can't get Xanax.

    You are the ONLY person tbat understands this. I'm super stressed super depressed super burned out. I am just done and am going through everything you are talking about every minute seems like an hour in my head. I'm scared of completely losing it.

      Jake Cherry I totally am going through the same things! I did completely loose it for about 9 months. I stayed in bed unless I had to do something that I could not get out of. It was horrible! I pray you won’t get to the place I did. Much Love

      Jake Cherry I feel for you! Does your state have a 411 phone number you can call for any kind of help needed? We do here in Colorado. You just dial 411 and you get someone on the other end that can direct you to help.

      Absolutely Traci - I 100% agree that either one of those things in and of themselves can be totally overwhelming and cause burnout.

      Big hugs to you, Traci, I was going to bring this up too! I am a stay at home mom with 3 at home and I am homeschooling. The “no off-time” recipe for burnout certainly applies here. Working or on-call 24/7 (youngest is still up in the night to nurse). And those emotionally-taxing dynamics with kids and partner... I’m glad I found this video as it is validating for me that there is a reason I feel grumpy and unfulfilled and tired.

    I work for the federal government and we have been short staffed for 2 years now, we were each working 7 days a week with 2 days off a month. I recently talked my boss into working 12 hours shifts on the weekends so we now get one day a week off but this has been going on so long that i think the burn out is already set it. I own a farm as well, it is small so not a ton of work but i am struggling to keep up with only a few days off a month. I have noticed i am taking more sick days, just to give myself a break, while i rarely took sick days, drinking more, my hips hurt constantly, i feel stuck. I am starting to get very worried that perhaps i am even slipping into depression. I look forward to your next video as i need to make some changes to make this sustainable for myself.

    I am getting burnt out from a relationship. I am experiencing these symptoms from trying to carry the load in a narcissistic battle. This is causing me to get very burnt out. My job is actually my escape and I have no one to lean on. I appreciate your content here. Its helping me realize how this is managing my life. It's also making me realize how it managed my mothers. I watched her react growing up where I thought it was her. I'm realizing it was not her. I need to go hug her.

    I suffered from burnout from my previous job. I tried to hold on and was about to throw in the towel, but then the company was sold, so I ended up having the decision made for me. Then I took 6 months off work completely, and it was the best decision of my life. 👌🏻

    I started seeing a counselor because of lack of motivation in work and increased irritability. She said I am suffering from burnout. I was trying to research more about burnout and found your channel. After watching this, there is no doubt that I am in full-blown burnout. I think this is something I have denied for years and cannot deny any longer.

      @@juliakristinamah Thank you! I'm a total pleaser normally, so I'm taking my time in this moment to stop doing that. Your video on that was the one forwarded to me by a friend, and has helped me set boundaries and take care of me first. I especially love the idea of 'people pleaser' = 'people deceiver', its so true. Im sure there's an innate need to control the situation and people around me that fuels this, but that's the next step of discovery to root out...

    Yep, definitely in burnout here. I will accept any additional work hours or duties without even thinking about it. I also get resentful when others get other duties and feel slighted when others get functions I know I can do. I have to take a deep breath before dealing with any customers because I am in a bad mood and am sure they are just going to start complaining before they even open their mouths. I'm in full fight mode from the moment I login. I used to like my job but now I dread it and even look for any little excuse to not do the work or do the bare minimum.
    I know for me it's part that I know I have reached the glass ceiling at my job and need to look for something else. The job hunt stresses me out because I have other issues I need to deal with but I know that I will eventually burn myself out of having a job as my performance continues to deteriorate.
    Even when I am off of work I dread it. I can usually make myself workout, do my hobbies and see the job as a means to an end, but even my destressers feel like a huge chore and I just want to sleep the rest of the day as soon as I am off of work. I have a little Consequence Card in my wallet that I read to remind myself what will happen if I lose my job. I even have another one to remind me to regulate my breathing and that I have a choice about how I am handling things or how I perceive things. I am getting to that "I don't care" point. If it weren't for my job performance before all this I am sure I would have gotten a write up or even fired. Most days I can power through it but the days when I don't care and really don't even try.
    It is time for a change. Thanks for this Julia. You rock as usual.

    I've experienced quite a few of these in the past and some recently. Burnout can happen to caregivers as well and I've learned to cope and take time for myself. Thanks for the videos! I'm a new subscriber and I found you on here when I was searching videos on how to say no.

    During grad school (for clinical counseling none the less) I had a nervous breakdown and walked out of a state job. I had burned every candle at all ends, and self-care was a distant thought. I know all to well what burn-out looks like and the importance of self-care. Thanks for the share! It's an important topic to discuss.

    Julia you're such an amazing person .
    I found you first time when I was struggling with major depression, anxiety and codependency.
    I really needed to go visit a therapist in my country but I honestly couldn't trust someone and my anxiety was preventing me to open up and talk about myself. But since I acknowledged that I truly need to seek help somehow i searched on TH-cam and your account was there!
    God, it's a blessing to have you in this world .

    "Not asking for help" - Yeah, me. Doesn't come from a place of arrogance but of embarassment even, if you will. Had to pause and write this because that hit home dead on.

      @@juliakristinamah It comes in the academic/professional field for me, my mind tells me it is embarassing I don't know this or that piece of information or how-to-do this or that thus instead of telling me to solve that by asking I shut down. Has everything to do with overdoing and excessively high expectations for myself, from myself, because I do know I'm capable of knowing or doing everything my peers do (I'm physically disabled) so it'd be doubly shameful I didn't sorta speak.

    Ding ding ding ding ding ding.. Nailed it on so many of these.. Im burnt out 4 sure, you got me on all of these except like, maybe 2? I guess I need to work on these because you're right it has 100% caused me depression. I kinda knew this was my issue but hearing you touch home on so many of these.... It's way worse than I thought and knowing it has brought it clearly to my attention to address. A much needed meditation session is in order. Clean up shop at home, then set some boundaries at work. Ty, I've found this most hopeful indeed. ♥️💯

    After watching this I noticed that I can relate to most of the signs, and for me the first step is to accept or acknowledge that I am about to or in the middle of burn out. I am in post secondary doing 3 assignments per week for a total of 12 weeks until a 1 week semester break, and I am generally someone who needs more time to do things. Even dropping down to 3 courses and have no social media worries and not having a job yet I still feel burnt out. I feel some, like me, are more prone to burnout. Thanks for the amazing content!

    When I heard you saying "lately", I checked the date and realised your video was published yesterday. I'm on the brink of burning out, it feels like I'm crumbling and am about to fall apart. Thanks you for this timely message Julia. I was on the suicide hotline last night in front of CVS waiting for two hours sweating thinking I was going to have heart attack. I have to be out of my house in 15 days. Worked 1 day in 25 days. I'm spiraling down so I'm not only burned out I'm pressured to move out by force. I dont know where to go what to do. People have died around me people have become distant. I don't know what to do. I normally make at least ten grand a month. I wish I could figure this out. I have the the worst anxiety and I work myself up so much been to the ER at least 200 times because of it. The problem is I'm stuck and there's not help for this condition. You say one wrong thing your in straps in a bed and medicated to just be quiet. So where do i go to get this Support?

    Hi Julia, I live in Belgium, I came across your videos in March the beginning of Covid-19. Wauw, I can truly say I am so grateful for all your time and energy that you put into all your videos. I can honestly say it has helped me so much understanding myself better. I completely can relate to this video. I thought I was going crazy, it was so difficult to explain to anyone what I was going through. I completely agree with the support network that is important.

    Yes, some of these symptoms apply to me; I'm a caregiver. Thank you for all these reminders. On some days, I feel like the care receiver is gonna drive me crazy. This is almost always when I can't get him to day care a couple days each week. I certainly deserve 2 days "off", and when I can't get 2 days, I usually soon FEEL it.

    Yes!
    Lying awake, wheels spinning, stomach churning n loose bowel movements. Feeling anxious n trapped. Lashing out at my partner n my family. Loathing my coworkers n customers. Feeling unable to ask for help. Allowing people take advantage of my capabilities n my time.
    Perfectionism, running on empty.
    Yes to all!
    I've been going through the motions of seeking help for my stress n anxiety. Talking to my doctor. Talking to a therapist for the first time. It's clear that I have some issues.
    On this path to self help I had looked up my symptoms n signs. Coping mechanisms for abusive relationships or simply just answers.
    That's how I found you :)
    Also, I'm happy to say that this past week I finally spoke up at work n it was very well received. I now have a raise n a promotion.
    That's not to say my problems are solved but I can say that a huge weight has been lifted n I can finally breathe a breath of relaxation n know that my working potential will flourish n no longer be unappreciated n stifled.

    Your videos help me get through anxiety, calm me down realizing that my pills running out is not a big deal so I don't take more during a panic so I'm really out and have to go to the ER and even talk me down in the middle of panic attacks which if anyone us reading this knows when your in crazy panic it's ER mandatory sometimes. The way you explain things is above and beyond any regular doctor explaining things we already know and there boring. You are very unique in the drive and highly motivated way you explain things. Your benefiting all of us with the issues we have and not yourself or just some cut and dry boring video that gives me more anxiety watching them. Thank you for using the education you have obviously worked hard to get and thanks for being motivated to help all of us. 😃😃😃

    I'm definitely at the burnt out stage. Car accident & seperated from my wife & 50/50 custody of my son as well running my own business that is flat out busy due to covid... And yet I feel like I'm not doing enough 🤦

    I can relate to this I’m in the hospitality field and it can be exhausting I also have chronic illnesses that affect my everyday life both mentally and physically . I can also relate to needing setting boundaries and the people pleasing saying yes too much and self medicating with alcohol and drugs

    It ALL resonates. And, it's a NEW job! (but not a new career) 25 weeks in and I'm still learning how to handle it. Spontaneous tears, eye twitching 3 hr into the shift. Sudden bathroom breaks. No control over when I'm done. Sometimes 2hr late to leave, no lunch and no dinner. Asked to leave 4hr early today and then spontaneously privately directly asked to drop everything and run in to work for only 4hr the next day (using my 25 ways to 'say no' list, wink). No sleep for days on end, < 4, like today! I am learning to define a 'day off', an entire day where I don't log in to the 4 required apps or a meeting or a class or training or not to include any of the drama in my home conversations, as I don't include any home conversation in my work. Learning to define 'drama' and how to let it swirl around me, but keep my temper and laugh through it like yesterday. No devices or equip working properly. Using work-around after work-around after work-around. Realizing other depts. and leaders and people are putting their needs in our hands too, the 'extra' demands that are expected and that I may or may not have resources or time to deliver. Taking a break in a tough period to feel satisfaction with how I'm doing, and how to 'check in' with myself that I'm still standing. Fresh brew tea for a couple minutes or step to a window and view the day outside or tell someone how I appreciate them. Yesterday was 75% 'not ideal', but coming home I remembered all the hugs and the kiss and the thumbs up and the appreciation and the camaraderie and the tolerance and the fatigue...emotional fatigue it takes. It's a different 'price'. There's no controlling it, but I can put it in a space that doesn't take from the other part of my life. I can confidently say, 'I have a life' outside that place & confidently say 'that's not my life, it's just work'. I can enjoy the window from the other side. And today IS ONE of those DAYS! XoXoX. IMPORTANT Message and TRUTH! XoXoX. TY.

    What about when you work for a manager who is a self proclaimed perfectionist, both in and out of the workplace. Also, pertaining to this same said manager, they have preferential treatment towards other employees, micro-manages to a -T-, and is constantly in your personal business in the workplace. It had even gotten to the point where I was cornered at work while she pummeled me with questions about a personal issue. I work for a small company, and there is no HR representative, this person basically doubles up as both. She can be very verbally aggressive and her moods consistently swing nearly each hour with very specific people. What do you do?? These are questions for my own therapist, I know, but it’s draining and very exhausting.

      I’ve talked to other employees and I’ve seen one other be treated even worse by her, but I’ve been told time and again that since her children are adults and she can’t control them anymore things have now shifted to work. The power trip has now shifted.

      Hopefully you have found answers for this already, but my personal opinion would be to remove yourself from this situation and find another job, that is a completely toxic environment that will never improve
      Coping with someone with those tendencies if you are very unlike them unfortunately is impossible 😔

    Oh yes been there.. now back to my old self - Burn out and suicide huge problem in my profession of veterinary medicine! There is starting to make advances in awareness and education.

      Yes there is a lot out there now about it- and a group was started called not one more vet - and vet schools are starting mental health education in school now because so prevalent.

      Lots of reasons - sensitive people who care a lot -perfectionism - dealing with high emotion and death frequently(we have to sometimes euthanize for $reasons )- both doctors and clients expectations that dr’s perfect and know everything- crushing student debt - access to lethal drugs and we know how to use them- people say we should treat animals for free because we love them and when we charge them we are theifs- all that Jazz! But even with all that I like it again after therapy and meds for anxiety !🤪

    This whole video fully describes what I'm going through, even as a high school student here.
    I used to love school, and not gonna lie I did really well almost every year. Now all of a sudden, I just can't take it, going to school, home, homework. It drains me every day. I've also never felt sleepy in class, guess what? In the second week of school in one of my classes I was so close to dozing off. I've never cared less about school ever in my life, I'm actually failing math, which was my best subject last year. The math doesn't add up. Then I found out...
    I was also dealing with depression...

    Hi Julia! How are you doing?
    My name is Jason Phelps and I am a prep cook at the Detroit Athletic Club. I have been working there since February of last year and I have had lots of anxiety about my job since I have started working in the employee dining room known as the 241. I am in charge of serving food to the employees and members of the club. On November 8, 2019, I volunteered at the Parade Company Pancake Breakfast. I had to wake up at 4:00am because I had to be at the Parade Company studios at 5:30am. I volunteered there until 10:00am then I had to go to work after that. I had to work from 12:00pm until 8:00pm and I was already tired. Then I put on my uniform and my co-worker was upset with me about something that happened the night before. Already I was tired having been up since 4:00am and I got real irritated because I got blamed for something that I did not do. Then that night of November 8, 2019, I could not sleep because my anxiety levels was so high. Then a few days after, I was feeling extremely tired to the point where my performance dropped. I could not tell if I was burning out or overly stressed because I was daydreaming more than usual and it would take me longer to complete my assignments. It would also take me twice as long to clean up and close down the employee dining room because I was so emotionally and physically drained. My coworker even noticed that I must have a lot on my mind because my head was spinning that week.
    Now I had been off of work for two weeks and I am trying to recover from those stressful moments and I am trying to address some concerns that I have about my job at the Detroit Athletic Club because I would like to perform at my optimal level and progress throughout my career in the Culinary field. My goals are to own my own restaurant and get my own apartment.
    This year, I am going to come up with strategies to prevent burnout at work and work on ways to increase confidence at work.

      It's really tough to know because so much of it is about finding a good fit for how you work. Some therapists will offer a free 15 minute consult before you book, so I recommend starting there!

    Sleep - I’m not sure when I had a solid nights sleep. I obsess so much about work that I routinely wake up a 3:00 am. Sometimes 1:00 am and 3:00 am. I immediately grab my phone and check email simultaneously hoping there will be a new message and hoping there won’t be one. I often dream about work sometimes dreaming of completing tasks at a job I left 10 years ago. I hate it and can’t shut it off.

    When you said the word "trapped" that had an effect on me. I've been using that word to describe how I feel about being single. Another one that fits is "stuck." These words I use to characterize my single life. To put it simply it has always had a negative effect on me. Finding the right woman for me has had a history of damaging me. Then you mentioned uncontrollable crying. I almost can't write this because I'm doing it with wet eyes and a lump in my throat. I should be okay once I find some videos of really entertaining idiotic stuff.

      Absolutely. I covered more work related stuff here, but anything that puts us in a state of stress and overwhelm with little control for a prolonged period can cause burnout.

    Yeah. I'd have to say multiple of these I relate to. Specifically, I end up crying at work, because I can't seem to make myself accepted socially. My personal relationships are suffering too. My elder sister won't let me see her new born child, and I've been standing up against my mother. I'd not be so anxious if I new how to fix my reputation, and get people to listen and trust me. My old boss at work is really good at social skills, so that he can flirt with the girls (usually minors) and be emotionally damaging to people whom have less social intelligence and less confidence, so that you can never truly be certain if he meant to hurt you, which means that you can't stand up against him or say anything to others to try to get help without appearing uncertain, feeling insecure and showing lack of confidence. I feel like I'm never gonna win socially, like I'll never be in the favor of women, because they like the boss (and other assholes at work), while disdaining me for my "incompetence", lack of confidence and lack of backbone (even though I'm one of the best at what I do, girls often see me in a negative way).
    Do you know how I can defend myself against emotions like that? How to not be too soft and assume the best in people when it's hurting me? How to I treat people who I'm not sure are against me, when I'm too soft to be mean, and when I don't have enough psychological foundation to stand up for myself?
