This is pretty incredible to be honest. It feels like we're seeing the first iteration of the next personal computing device. Like how the first "mobile" phone was a suitcase. Or the first laptop was a 11kg backpack. In my opinion the Meta Ray Bans has nailed the form factor, but completely lacks the cisual AR aspect while the Ray Neo glasses is the closest to what I think most people want functionality wise but in a pretty clunky form factor.
My intuition is that with how power efficient recent lightweight devices has become (for example the new M4 is so powerful that they had to take significant steps to not make the iPad a direct Macbook competitor), we're going to see the capabilities of the Ray Neo in much better form factors within a year or two. And the world will never look the same.

During the 1990s I attended a Siggraph Convention for computer animators - very enjoyable. Most there were young people excited about CGI etc. But there was this one booth, by Sony, where two Japanese scientists were wearing white scientific coats - they could not speak any english, who were demonstrating wearable glasses. When they observed me being interested, they encouraged me (using physical movement - not by speaking...) to try on a pair.
And I was STUNNED!!! The glasses were crystal clear, and I could see a computer screen right in front of my eyes in incredible clarity. I could also manipulate a 'mouse' on the screen. Again, everything was soooo crystal clear!
I handed back the glasses to these two Sony scientists wearing white science coats. They smiled at me. And I've been looking for these glasses being available on the market ever since. That was back in the 1990s. It's now 2024.

I could see AI glasses replacing hearing aids. Most hearing aids suck when you're in a noisy talkative crowd. If you had a pair of glasses with a camera, an AR screen on the lens for displaying text, and an AI model trained to read lips, that could come in really handy.

    • @shukrantpatil

Thing is most deaf people are very good at lip reading, even many people who can hear are good at lip reading so I don't see an AI glass really creating a great impact, maybe little gadget but that's it

There's a set of headphones that isolate someone talking in front of you and cancel out all other sound. However nobody wants a massive pair of headphones on their head all day, and looking at a review video the sound was clear, but also sort of umm.... funky.

@@shukrantpatil I'm thinking of a niche use case where something like this might be helpful. I have a friend in her 60s born with genes that have caused her to lose her hearing as she ages. She's too old to learn sign language but she's able to get by using Google Live Transcribe on her phone, but it's awkward. If she could use a similar app with glasses so she can read what people are saying to her without having to break eye contact to look at her phone, I bet it would be an improvement. The problem with Live Transcribe is that it sucks when you're in a noisy environment. I thought lip reading AI using the camera might be a better option when there's too much background chatter.

I love my XReal Air Pro 2. You didn’t mention that they are wearable monitors. I no longer have a room with three monitors. I now have THREE large monitors in my glasses ANYWHERE I go. Freedom. I’m not stuck in my office. These glasses are amazing on a plane for watching movies. On a plane and want to work on your laptop without straining your neck? Confidential info on your computer? Dim your laptop screen and look at everything on the glasses.
I’ve found lots of cool things do with them. One day I was watching one of your videos while chopping veggies using the Beam accessory and using sideview mode.
I have the special prescription lenses inside them, which have blue blocker. My astigmatism and the light was making my eyes water without them.
I don’t want them to be wireless. The glasses are lighter without a battery and one less thing for me to forget to charge.
Can you tell I love them?
    I’m an early adopter.
Have you gotten your Rabbit? At least we got it basically for free, assuming we would’ve been paying for Perplexity anyway. sigh…
I may get Meta prescription glasses instead of sunglasses.

Hi, Matt! This is a great review, and thanks so much for posting it. As always we viewers very much appreciate your unbiased views and reports - it helps us keep up with what's out there and available.
It seems all the use cases for these AR glasses/headsets are for entertainment and personal use, but what about for more business-oriented applications? For example, how do the various offerings perform if we wanted to sit in our recliner, with a keyboard in our lap and write things in a Word or Google document, or if we wanted to create graphics in Affinity or Canva, or if we wanted to edit a video in DaVinci Resolve or Camtasia? I have always thought it would be great to have that huge virtual screen floating in front of me, so I could do this sort of stuff in greater comfort than a desk chair - or even in the passenger seat of a car while my wife is driving. Maybe you could consider a video soon on how well some of these work in more practical use cases?
Thanks for all you do, and take care!

It seems you neglected to mention which of these (the Raybans are the only "glasses" I know of) that would allow you to have lenses that you could see through if you need a prescription (not counting VR headsets, because they aren't practical as glasses).
If someone needs prescription glasses some of those with embedded screens wouldn't be practical (unless they offered prescription versions).
Also a tip! If you have health insurance, they may cover smart glasses with a prescription like my Raybans). Much cheaper then!

I'd go for the RayNeo with AR. All other choices seem to be for you to be locked down at home. I'm an outside person and a photographer / videographer so RayNeo for navigating outside your home.

For the past few years I've loved my Ray-Ban Stories, in the Wayfarer style, they've looked great and worked well. I've been considering getting the next gen Ray-Ban Meta. But, I've also always wanted AI driven AR projection on the lenses. I think they could do it if they focus on the augmented reality function as just being meant to enhance life through finding information and translations instead of trying to be immersive gamer glasses. I do like that the next gen "Meta" have better cameras and speakers.

Maybe I am an outlier but I want AR glasses that give audio and video turn by turn directions for walking and in car use. Glasses that do translations of word and audio so I can use them when interacting with a person in in a museum on a walk and need to translate a sign or text. The ability to take decent photos of what I am looking at and use the same camera for AI functions. The ability to listen to music, podcast or translation while keeping ears open the rest of the time so no need for ear buds. The very last feature would be a large screen in good quality for watching movies or playing games. Although nice it is far down the list of wants for how I would actually use such glasses. Keeping hands free by not incorporating a cell phone for calls, text or picture taking is where I see an improvement over typical smart phone. Until AR glasses can keep my phone out of hand I don't see them as a viable replacement but just an add on accessory.

This video is in sore need of the Even Realities G1. It doesn't have a camera and it doesn't output audio but instead, it focuses on giving you a Heads-Up Display that pops up when you tilt your head upward (the angle is customizable). It can do navigation, notes, live translation, teleprompter mode, and some more. It's the only real competition with the Meta Raybans when it comes to daily wearers that don't look out of place, giving you a kind of hidden functionality only you can know about.

There's a bunch already, why hasn't he done that?
Maybe it's because he doesn't wanna pay 300 bucks for Replika, which used to be like 80 for the pro version and used to be mostly an AI friend and now is an AI wife/girlfriend that you can dress up in sexy outfits. I like having erotic roleplay and shit and even I'm sick of every update being more sexy clothing. They need to update the AI desperately along with adding hair that you don't need to pay for. Plus, maybe adding more rooms or pets that aren't ugly or the ability to have Replikas connect. The woman who created it made it so she could have conversations with her friend who died, but now it's solely a sexual thing.

I was hoping somehow I'd see the Xreal Air 2 Ultras in this video, but I've heard they're not out yet. Not sure. The Xreal Air 2 pros just add a lens darkening feature so you don't need the blackout cover. The Ultras seem to have cameras on them though like you were hoping.

These feel like gadgets which would be useful for a niche group of people, designing engineers for example, apart from that I don't think they will really be of any use for the average person. Also i guess your eyes will strain real fast with screen that close.

Meta Orion will be the game changer. The Rayneo is close but the FOV is so small in comparison. Not to mention the Orions can do video calls too and use Meta AI. Too bad cost $10,000 to make. The next model will be thinner and the consumer ready product.

I would love to hear your opinion on the Vuzix Blade 2's.
They're sadly a bit expensive at $1200 and you can get corrective lenses for it for an additional +$150
They only have a screen in a single eye (sadly, I do prefer both eyes)
The Vuzix Blade 2 seems closest to the TCL RayNeo X2 that you tried out, though I think they look even more like normal glasses than those (not so bulky).
I'm personally looking for a set of AR glasses that look more normal (as much as possible at least) that can also mirror one's phone.
Mirroring one's phone while looking relatively normal seems to be VERY hard to find....
I sadly cannot find anything on actual testing of the battery life by any users with numbers all over the place (I would like them to last through a work shift...).
If you are up for trying another set of Smart Glasses and are willing to review it, that would be amazing.....
